    3. Evening Everyone.I just returned from the FHC,where I finished looking at the Marriage records for Jackson Co,Arkansas.I found the following 2 Whaley marriages for 1921. Willie Whaley of Sulpher Rock in County of Independance,State of Arkansas age 23 to Essie or Elssie McJunkins of Sulpher Rock age 18 Dec 14 1921 Coreline Malone of NewArk,County of Independance,State of Arkansas age 21 to Jessie Whaley of NewArk,County of Indenpendance,State of Arkansas age 19 Dec 31,1921 I do have a Willie Whaley in my line, born in 1893.He is the son of John Lewis Whaley and Alice D.So Now I can work on that one also,in looking for the Marriage Certificate. But that would make my Willie 28 instead of 23.Unless I figured it out wrong.Any Ideas? 1. More on John Calhoun Whaley
    2. dwhaley
    3. I just got back from the Fort Worth Library. This is what I found out by checking the 1850 census and Wills and Probates from Abbeville, South Carolina: Lewis Whaley is the father of John Calhoun He died 12/7/1850. He was a War of 1812 veteran. Elizabeth (Starlen) Whaley is the daughter-in-law of Lewis. She was married to William Whaley (Lewis' son) on 10/24/44. William died 5/22/1845 and she evidently lived with Lewis, Demaris (Damaus), and John Calhoun, after his death. On the 1850 census, these Whaleys are surrounded by Calhouns, so I am going to check to see if John's mother was either a Calhoun or a Williams (in reference to John's son's name: Lewis Williams) Anyway, you are wonderful. Debbie Whaley

    1. John Calhoun Whaley and Amanda Canady
    2. To Deb Whaley, etal, from Jackie Weeden. I found a SC census record that looks very promising. In the Census for 1850 for Abbeyville Co SC, Saluda Twp. : Lewis Whaley- age 58 b SC Elizabeth Whaley- age 38 b SC Demaris Whaley- age 22 (Male) b SC John Whaley- age 16, b SC This John Whaley is of the right age to be your John Calhoun Whaley. Notice that your John Calhoun Whaley named a son Lewis and a daughter Elizabeth. And there was a Downs Calhoun family living next door to this Lewis Whaley in the 1850 census. This location is in western SC, as I mentioned before. What do you think????

    1. Marriage data in Arkansas--Santana
    2. >From Jackie Weeden- Dear Santana--I appreciate all of the effort you have been putting forth in your film-reading effort. As I understand it, you descend from the D.A. Whaley and Veronica (Glass) Young of Tuckerman, AR who m in 1916. If you locate a copy of the actual marriage license, then it should tell you the parents of D.A. and Veronica. (The marriage was in 1916) You could also follow that procedure for the Albert Whaley who m Lelei Dl Shipley in 1915 and Tilman whaley who m Kellie Gifford in 1915. That would help you determine if they were of your family. If Albert and Tilman m in 1915, they would probably be in the 1920 census records. But that would not tell you who the parents were. They might be found as children living with their parents in earlier AR census records--1900 and 1910. Jackie

    1. Marion F. Whaley, Bonham, Tex b. 1864
    2. Beverly Graham
    3. This is just a report of new information I've received regarding my Whaley "sideline" (my mother was a Whaley, but this info concerns my sister-in-law's line. Her name is Mary Whaley). Gen 1: Marion F. (Frank) Whaley, b. Oct. 21, 1864, d. Nov. 22, 1945; came from either England or Germany and settled in the Bonham, Tex., area around the early 1890s. His wife (name not known) was full-blood German, spoke little English; b. Feb. 19, 1874, d. Mar. 14, 1933 in Bonham. Gen 2: Vervin Verlon Whaley b. in Bonham April 7, 1894, d. Oct. 28, 1962 in Hugo, Okla., buried in Bonham. M. Annie Lavada Robinson (mother of Verlon Dempsey; V. V. had at least one other wife). V. V.'s brother was Marron Ernest Whaley, b. May 19,1895, d. Sept. 30, 1918, apparently in WWI (there's a U.S. flag and patriotic poem engraved on the headstone). Gen 3: Verlon Dempsey Whaley, b. 10/16/23 in Bonham, Texas; wife Mary Oselee Boggs, b. 8/13/23 in Burkburnett, Texas; married Feb. 7, 1942, in Ardmore, OK. Gen 4: Mary Lavada Whaley (plus other children, and two younger generations) Marion F., Mrs. M. F., V. V., and Marron Ernest Whaley are buried in Hampton Cemetery at Edhube, near Bonham. I have photos of these headstones, thanks to a kind gentleman in that county who photographed them and e-mailed the pictures to me, in response to my query on a message board. As yet I've no indication if there's a relationship between this line and my mother's. My mother's mysterious Whaley grandfaher has not yet been located (father of Jesse Monroe Whaley), though I am investigating an intriguing possibility of an identity for Jesse's father. __________________________________________ NetZero - Defenders of the Free World Get your FREE Internet Access and Email at http://www.netzero.net/download/index.html

    1. Hail Fellow WSPer's
    2. dwhaley
    3. I, too, have been wondering if our fellow WSPer's have been getting lashed by all the natural disasters going around. I have been reading a book called "Slaves in the Family" by Edward Ball, and I would definitely recommend it for those of us doing genealogy research. It is wonderful how he ties in the history of South Carolina with his family research. I have always been told that my Whaley family participated in the "peculiar institution" on the ownership side, and I have always wondered how this would affect my research. Also, does anyone have any research on the Whaley family of Edisto Island, South Carolina? Some of my research is starting to make sense......but I need more information.

    1. Seth Whaley
    2. Hello WSP My Whaley cousin at last visited with over 100 letters and documents pertaining to the Whaleys, Romans and Gastons last month. It has taken me until today to put my head together to sort through the multiple piles. Interestingly, there are a number of references to Jackie Weeden, dating back a decade or two! Found a reference to Seth -- not a historical document, but handwritten. I may be perpetuating misinfo here but thought before I put it away I would post it and a few other things to the WSP: Seth M. Whaley parents: Elijah Whaley Rebecca Doherty from Union Church Cemetery, Stotts City just off highway 44 Seth M. Whaley b. June 1829 d. Dec. 1899 Mary Ross Whaley b. Sept 8 1837 d. Mar 26 1890 Mary born Sept. 8, 1837 in a log hous on Sith's Creek, a fork of Indian Creek in Hardin Co. Tenn. Seth b. July 18, 1829 in DeKalb Co. on Clear Creek Tenn. Children of Seth and first wife: Thomas, James, Lemuel, John. Second brief marriage, no children Third marriage to Mary Ross of eastern Tenn: children George A., Eliza, Sarah, Mattie, Cara, Ancil. Hope this is of some use to the cuzzins. Sue J.

    1. Ozark AL? or Ozark AR?
    2. The WSP cousins have been quite quiet and I was wondering if some were busy on the east coast with the rains and maybe some on the west coast were picking up the pieces from the earthquake, or maybe some of you were in the planeloads that came to SD this weekend to hunt pheasants. BUT, I find that some of you are reading all that goes on here very carefully !!!! I went to a local funeral parlor Friday and asked for the name of the funeral homes in Ozark, AL. He had a book with ALL the funeral homes in America. He wrote the data on a piece of paper and then I put it on line. Immediately Clara Spivey wrote that the name was wrong, the address was wrong, the zip code was wrong and the phone number was wrong. She SHOULD have also said that the STATE was wrong. Santana wrote next and said that was *Arkansas* data as he lives there. Gene is also confused, but had been there to Ozark, AL and checked both funeral homes out--no records for his James Ratliff. So you cuzzins are really watching!! Thanks.-- Ruby The following just came from Clara--Thanks! "The 501 area code is for Ar (Arkansas). The two funeral homes in Ozark, AL (Alabama) are Fuqua-Bankston, 334/774-4551. That is a fairly new funeral home. The other is Holman Funeral Home, 334/774-5348. The zip code is 36360." And thanks, Gene for all the data from the cemetery that you sent to Jackie!-----Ruby P.S. I will tell my family NOT to have this funeral director handle my last rites. I would probably end up in *ND*!

    3. Hi,sorry it has taken so long. The film finally came in this week. Before I jot down what I found,I did notice that if the women where married more than once, they used that married name, instead of there maiden name. But luck was on my side,And I did find D.A. Whaley & Veronica Glass marriage.Of Course she was married before that to Arthur Young. So that explains why the marriage records say Young instead of Glass.Ok,here is what I found. David A. Whaley of Tuckerman in County of Jackson,in the State of Arkansas age 42 to Mrs.Veronica(Glass)Young of Tuckerman in County of Jackson in the State of Arkansas age 25 married 19 March 1916 Recorded 28 Mar 1916 page 24 W.T. 1. Alabama sources--Gene Hardy Whaley and Clara Spivey
    2. >From Jackie Weeden-- Dear Gene Hardy Whaley and cousin Clara Spivey, etal-- I, too, am disappointed that the records re James Ratliff Whaley that you were seeking were not in Dale Co AL at Ozark. So the Courthouse records burned, and the Church records burned, and the Library newspapers did not go back to 1924! Here are some more things to try: 1. The present Funeral Home in Ozark is: Shaffer Funeral Home, Hwy 64 West, Ozark, AL, 72949 Phone 501-667-4147 Write, call or go there in person and ask if they have records back to 1924 and if not, who does?? 2. For old AL newspapers, which contain obituaries, write to : Alabama Archives and History Department World War Memorial Building Montgomery AL, 36104. 3. For death certificates back to 1908 write to: Bureau of Vital Statistics Department of Public Health Montgomery, AL, 36130. (Perhaps they had the Ozark records on file before the fire.) I am puzzled as to why Edward Whaley and Elizabeth Caldwell of Greene Co GA are being 'suspected' as being the parents of James Ratliff Whaley. What is the reason for this possible connection? Ruby has taken on locating the correct marriage date for this couple. If it is 1803, then Elizabeth Caldwell could NOT be the mother of James R, as James' mother Elizabeth was born in 1802. If it is 1830, then it is POSSIBLE that they are the parents of James R., but not a sure fact. We will have to wait and find out which date is correct. You asked if I wanted ALL of the names and dates of the Whaleys and their spouses that you found in the Asbury Methodist Church Cemetery. Yes, I would like them. Are you sure the cemetery records burned, also? Or is there a sexton somewhere in Ozark that has the lists of who is buried there??? ?Happy? Hunting Jackie Weeden

    1. James Ratliff Whaley's parents???
    2. The mystery continues--- The hunting expedition by Gene was a failure. He went to the Dale Co AL Courthouse and found no records there because of a fire. And he went to the Library to find the 1924 obituary for James R. in an old newspaper and their records only went back as far as 1931. So....does some funeral home in Ozark AL have records back to 1924 or..since he was bur in a Methodist Cemetery, was he a member of the Methodist Church, and would the church have records of his death and identify his parents? Just a thought. Some think that Edward Whaley and Elizabeth Caldwell were the parents of James R. AND--since the marriage of Edward Whaley and Elizabeth Caldwell is reported as being BOTH in 1803 and 1830--it is imperative to determine which is true. Someone somewhere has reversed those numbers. So....I went to the LDS Family History Center in RC and ordered film #-159052--Marriage records of Greene Co GA, from the late 1700s to the mid 1800s. I will look at the 1803 records and if it is there, I will photocopy it and send copies to Gene Whaley and Clara Spivey. And if it is not in 1803, I will check 1830 and follow the same procedure. We NEED to know which is correct, as Jackie and I have it in our book as 1803. We feel an 1803 marriage would make it VERY improbable that Elizabeth Caldwell was James R.'s mother. The stone beside James R. shows Elizabeth, the mother, as being b May 18, 1802, and d Aug. 18, 1882. There is no Edward stone to be found. It will take about 2 weeks to get this film, read it and report back. :-( IF there is anyone out there in WSP who can help with Gene and Clara Spivey's problem, let us know, please. It would seem that someone there in Dale Co AL knows for sure who the parents of James R. are. Ruby Nelson
