    2. Elizabeth G. Brett
    3. Hello, I am Elizabeth Grayson Brett...a descendant of Whaleys. I had heard that my Whaleys had come in through VA in the late 1600's or early 1700's and may have had a home in Maryland called Genesar. I have photos of Genesar in an old book...but don't know that it was a home of MY Whaleys. They may have moved to Tennnessee at some point as I had heard that rumor My oldest Whaley line may not be accurate as some of our family history was hidden and the family bible from that branch was burned. The oldest Whaley I have is (maybe) Ely Whaley , born in England (big maybe?) died in Walton Co., GA 1840 His son is listed as James D. Whaley b. 1808 in Walton Co. GA, d. 1888 Texas. married to Rachel Authur b. 1810 in Clark Co. GA, d. 1869 Polk Co. GA (source his elderly son) James's son or grandson is(maybe) : James Russell Whaley (Capt. 5th GA CSA) b. March 1, 1830 m. Oct. 7, 1855 to Emily Bell in Escambia Co. FL (source Emily's granddaughter's husband-my grandfather) James Russell Whaley's father is listed as Caleb Whaley whose brother is (maybe) Sidney Russell Whaley (Col. GA reg. CSA)(source my Grandfather) Needless to say...I'm a little confused Researching: Whaley, Wellborn, Bell, Little, King, Aurthur, Grayson, Casteel, loooking for various ancestries and possible Native American ancestry.

    2. DEB HANDSHEW
    3. My name is Deborah Whaley Handshew I live in Harrisburg, PA . I found this web ring over the summer, but didn't have my family information to share. I am trying to find out if the research my father did is correct. The oldest relative we have proof of is Thomas Whaley, Sr. 1756-1847 md Eunice Hubbard, Providence, RI. Son Thomas Whaley, JR (1782-1846) md Lydia Kent lived near Linesville, PA. They had 8 children, Henry, Nancy, Althea May, William, Eunice, Lydia, Rachael, and Jeremiah. Henry (1805-1877) md Hannah Mosier. They had 6 children Chauncey, Josiah, Hiram, Lucinda, Levi, and Almira. Josiah ( Cy) (1837-1915) md Mahala Ladner (1815-1854) they had two children Elrie (1863-1938) and Alvira ( 1865- 1939). Josiah left PA around 1868 and moved to Illinois where he married again to Susan Frances Bean and had two more children, Neva Marie (1872 -1977) and Marshall Henry. Elrie (1863-1937) Linesville, PA married Valania Carnes in 1896. They had eleven children. Neva, Carl, Merle, Cy, Elmer, May, Clair, Edna, Rhea, Helen, and Guy Thomas. Guy Thomas (1899-1976) married Allice Catherine Bowen (1903-1986) Conneaut Ohio they later moved to Queens Junction,PA they had one son who is my grandfather Paul Whaley (1932- ) md Betty Sweeney (1925-1996). They had two children John Thomas ( 1947 -) and Cathie Aleene (1948- ) John Thomas married Dianna Watson (1947) in 1968. I was born in 1970. I hope all this information is helpful to people researching the Whaley famiy. If anyone one thinks some of the info is not really right please let me know. Most of the info came from Neva Whaley Harding from family records in 1955. I am interesting in learning more about the family. - Deborah Whaley Handshew [email protected]

    2. >From Jackie Weeden to Timothy Lawrence, etal. "I noticed your entry re Alexander and Ruth McAnally in Digest 240. I have Family Group Sheets (FGS) on both that family and their son James who married Rebecca Nobles. However some of my dates do not correspond with yours. In her pension application for Alexander his wife Ruth says he died in the fall of 1850 and apparently he died in Poinsett Co AR. It seems he left Ruth and started another family with Margaret Hays in AR. I also have a FGS for them. I have a couple more kids for James and Rebecca, also. Maybe someone else has already contacted you, but if you want copies of these FGSs we can send them to you by attachment. I would like to exchange information with you." RLNSD @aol.com

    1. Searching for Wyamarus - 3
    2. Frank Whalley
    3. Still seeking the illusive (and possibly illusory) Wyamarus Whalley, standard bearer at the battle of Hastings, I looked up another of the references given by the Rev. Samuel Whaley in his book 'English Record of the Whaley family'. This is 'The General Armory of England, Scotland, and Ireland', by John Burke, and John Bernard Burke. I found three editions: the first edition of 1842, the third edition of 1844, and an unnumbered edition of 1884. The first and third editions list 6 Coats of Arms for the name Whaley, and 8 for Whalley. The 1884 edition lists 5 and 12 respectively. For most entries, there is just a technical description of the Arms. But occasionally, some details of the family with a right to bear the Arms are given. In the 1842 and 1844 editions, one such entry is of the the Whalley family of Norton Hall, County Somerset, and Hinton House, Hampshire. It says 'descended from Wyamarus Whalley, who accompanied the Conqueror to England, and was standard bearer at the battle of Hastings'. But no evidence is adduced to substantiate the claim. This is the same family I reported in my previous note, which I found in 'A General and Heraldic History of Commoners', by - guess who! - the very same John Burke who was one of the authors of the 'General Armory'. His co-author John Bernard Burke, also wrote 'Genealogical and Heraldic Dictionary of the Landed Gentry', and I looked at the edition for 1853. In it is the same Whalley family, and the same unsubstantiated claim to be descended from Wyamarus. So I found a family claiming descent from Wyamarus in 4 scholarly tomes published well over 100 years ago. The story must be true then? When I find all four are by the same pair of authors, who worked together, then the argument loses a lot of its power. And significantly, in the 5th tome, the 'General Armory' published in 1884, the entry for the particular Whalley family is much the same as in the previous editions, except all reference to a claim of descent from Wyamarus has been dropped. I've not got much further forward, but I'm not discouraged. The search continues. Any ideas would be appreciated. Frank Whalley

    2. Tammy Ginger-Riquelme
    3. My name is Tammy Ginger-Riquleme and, along with my sister-in-law, I am attempting to trace our family roots on the Whaley side. My mother (deceased) had some information, but it isn't available to us any more. She was a Whaley, born 7 Feb 1939, Wheaton, MN, died 18 March 1990. Her Mother, Alvera Metilda Klindworth Whaley, born 15 June 1918, is still living, but has little information about the Whaley side of the family. She married Arthur George Whaley, born 15 July 1913, in 1935. All we know about his parents are that his father's name was Earl and was married (?) in Ireland or Holland. We have accounted for three siblings, all brothers, Irvin, James, Edwin. We also know that at some point, the family moved to Galesburg, Illinois, where the biggest part of my Mother's family still lives. Thank you for any help you might be able to give us and for the opportunity to join in...*S* Sincerely, Tammy

Unfortunately, Susan's stone was broken into three pieces and Edward's stone had been reset with the lower portion (with the year) below ground. My husband held Susan's stone so I could photograph it (they can be so helpful on these jaunts). It may be a couple of weeks before I finish this roll of film & get it developed. Although with six grand kids & a cat that thinks he's a contortionist, it might be sooner! The St. Jose Genies (the genealogical group from White Pigeon) has stared an index of the St. Joseph County cemeteries. So far they are down to the M's (I think). Anyway, I went to the Sturgis library & checked the Dutton listing. This is what I found: Sec. Row Stone Edward Whaley d. 08/12/1841 N 5 17 Sally Whaley w/ Edward d. 10/15/1841 N 5 16 There were several other Whaley stones, including one for a Thankfull P. Whaley w/o Henry H. Whaley (buried next to E & S). The really odd coincidence is, that I just did a lookup for a gentleman who was interested in the Fisher family & his Thankfull Fisher was married the Henry Whaley (the same). Small world! If you would like the rest of the Whaleys listed in the index, let me know - I go the library frequently. The other children listed are based on strong circumstantial evidence. Notes: In Book G, p. 98, Court of Common Pleas, Jackson Co OH, is an entry regarding George Whaley, Revolutionary War soldier, which is dated 10-27-1851 and indicates that his surviving children as of then were Silas Whaley, Joseph Whaley, William Whaley, Abner Whaley and Mary Shuster. Because of the considerable difference in the ages of George and Mary Katherine, there is a possibility that she may have been his second wife. IF that were so, there is no way of determining which of the the listed children were Mary's--at least from the public records found so far. She had been in declining health for a number of years and had expected to move to Newport, Ky., this fall to make her home with her daughter, Miss Fannie Lee Whaley, who teaches in the Newport city schools. She was a native of Indiana, a daughter of Mathias and Georgia Ann Harper, born January 19, 1856. The greater part of her life had been spent at or near Bethel, where her husband, the late Robert Whaley, who died some thirty years ago, was a prominent and widely known farmer. Besides her daughter, Miss Fannie Lee Whaley, she is survived by one brother, J. T. Harper, of Sunrise, Ky., and one sister, Mrs. Ida Vice, Owingsville, and two half-sisters, Misses Berta and Grace Harper, of Cincinnati. Funeral services were held at the Bethel Christian church Sunday afternoon, September 25, conducted by the Rev. H. Myron Kauffman. Interment was in Longview Cemetery at Bethel. 1. Searching for Wyamarus - 2
    2. Frank Whalley
    3. I found a reference to Wyamarus in a book listed as a source by Rev. Samuel Whaley in his book 'English Record of the Whaley Family etc'. The book, which I found in Cardiff Public Library, is: John Burke, 'A General & Heraldic History of Commoners of Great Britain & Ireland enjoying Territorial Possessions or High Official Rank, But Uninvested with Heritable Honours' 4 Volumes. Pub: Henry Colburn 1838. ISBN (and DYNISC) 449346. (Didn't they just love long titles back then?) I also found an index volume, published at a later time, and so I am pretty certain there is only one entry for Whalley, and none for Whaley, Walley, or any other variation of spelling. Rev. Sam. says the book spells the name 'Whaley', but he's mistaken. The entry concerns the family of Hyde-Salmon Whalley of Norton Hall, Somersetshire, and Hinton House, Hants. Somerset is in the south west of England, and Norton Hall should not be confused with the village of Norton, in the county of Leicestershire, in the English Midlands, which also has a Whalley family associated with it. Hants. is short for Hampshire, a county in the south of England, wherein lies the port of Southampton. Rev. Sam keeps calling it 'Hauts'. Here is the part of the entry concerning Wyamarus: 'The family of Whalley in Somerset claims to be descended from Wyamarus Whalley, who accompanied WILLIAM the Conqueror from Normandy, and was the standard bearer at the battle of Hastings. The Conqueror gave him the Lordship of Whalley in the county of Lancaster, in which shire as well as in the counties of Stafford, and Nottingham, his descendants possessed extensive property.' The family described in the entry is the same as in Rev. Sam's book, page 38 to 42, which, he implies, he got from a record in the College of Heraldry. Hyde-Salmon Whalley inherited Norton Hall from his great uncle James Tooker, and it seems that in order to get the estate, he had to change his name to Tooker. Rev. Sam says that it was at the time of the name change that an heraldic record was made to show descent from Wyamarus. For this information he refers to Rev. Mark Noble's book 'Memoirs of the Protectoral House of Cromwell'. This is simply untrue: Noble makes no reference to Wyamarus. Rev. Sam even spells Noble's name wrongly! Furthermore, Hyde-Salmon Whalley was born in 1790, which was after Noble's book was published! Another disappointment: Before listing the family lineage, down from the year 1601, Rev. Sam says (p38), 'The man whose name stands first in the following line of ancestors, was doubtless an acknowledged descendant of Wyamarus Whaley. Hence no further record was necessary'. This must surely must be a mealy-mouthed way of saying that no documentary evidence was produced to show the descent from Wyamarus. So where does all this leave my search for Wyamarus? The Whalley entry in Burke's 'History of Commoners' says only that the family 'claims' to be descended from Wyamarus, and quotes no documentary evidence. Rev. Sam, referring to the same family, also uses the word 'claims', and goes on to say that documentary evidence is not needed because descent from Wyamarus is 'acknowledged'. I still think that the Wyamarus story is likely to be just a load of hooey. But the search continues. Frank Whalley
