    1. James H. Whaley and Cora J. McGhee-Patrick Andrus
    2. Hi Patrick, etal-- I have a copy of James H. Whaley and Cora J. McGhee Family Group Sheet on disk. This is from Jackie Weeden's files. James H. was in the Civil War, 77th Reg., Company K. and received a pension. The dates you gave match pretty well, but she has not any children listed, as they were married 1890 at Round Lake, Malta, Saratoga Co NY and the last census she has is 1900 where he was 55 and she was 47. Jackie has her death date as 3-25-1920. This FGS has census records for 1850, 1855, 1865, 1870, 1880 and 1900 all in Saratoga Co NY. His parents are listed as James Whaley and Eliza Wait. The census records show some siblings for James H. If you would like to see a copy of this, I can attach one to you. rlnsd for Jackie Weeden.

    3. Jackie & Ruby, Re: George W. and Mary Hunt--Estella Johnson I do the family researching and of course have other documentation of family data so can provide more source documentation on particular items upon request. The HUNT line is that of my husband, Raymond Johnson, and my children, of course. [I had written...So you might want to change the note on bottom of fs of Thomas M Whaley which says descendant Estella (Kling) Johnson to descendant Ray Johnson with an asterisk that he ie, Ray Johnson was desc of Edward HUNT & Almira Pratt, and not of George W Whaley & Mary HUNT...] Does this clear up the ambiguity? I am very interested in hearing from any living descendants of George W WHALEY & Mary HUNT. I hope it was proper to respond via this list. Estella Johnson

I sent word that the Thomas-Bratten material I sent her can be replaced. What a bummer. Question--Do any of you know what a Magnetic Healer is? One of Deb Whaley's ancestors was one, and we wonder what it was. Did he use magnets to cure diseases???? Or what?? Deb also asks what INTESTATE means. Deb, if your ancestor died intestate, that means he left no will and ALL descendants will be listed. Dying intestate is a plus for researchers, because wills do not always tell ALL of the descendants-- ONLY the ones that the writer of the will WANTS to be an heir. If any of you sent me a message on Tue. and I did not reply, it is probably because a message disappeared from the screen before I could read it. Do any of you know anything about any Ebenezer Whaley? I just got some info from Dale Cantrell that an Ebenezer was a member of the Presbyterian Church in Baltmore, MD. (One Hundred Years of History, 1802-1902.) We would like to know about him, as he was involved in the early Worcester Co MD activities.

    1. Thomas Whaley and Margaret Bratten/Bratton
    2. To Lynne, Barbara, Georgia, Janet, and all of the other cousins-- We were surprised and delighted with all of the feedback re the parents of Thomas Whaley of MD who d in TN and had children Elijah, Thomas Mary and Seth Brown. Janet wanted a discussion and she really got one. We, too, have struggled with this question. And since we have never had anyone produce a *document* that says that the parents of this Thomas Whaley are Elias Whaley and Martha Dale, we have not used them in our FGSs. We know about the LDS records that state this is true, but LDS records are often erroneous. Anyone can enter something as a fact, but with no documented sources, it is just a theory. If someone can give us the documented proof, I will slip in the *T* disk here and have the entries made in a few seconds. We have looked over the Sources listed by Barbara that were given by Mary Murdock, and the only one that seems logical would be a family Bible. Does the Smith or Whaley family Bible give the parents for Thomas?? When I was in Salt Lake City last year, I found that someone had entered an incorrect spouse for one of my GA Whaleys. I was almost in tears, as I tried to explain to them that we have a document that gives her NEE name. The new entry is wrong and they will not change it. We have to double check these LDS entries. In Jackie Weeden's FGSs, she uses ?? or THEORY along with the data if she is not sure. One of her favorite quotes is, <G>, "There ain't nuthin' wrong with theory." Theory gives one a hint as some angle to pursue. Georgia gave some good facts about the Elias inventory. She says the next of kin listed were Seth and his wife. BUT the LDS has a record that says the next of kin were Nathaniel and Charles. (Actually, they were listed as desperate debtors.) Elias' wife Martha never recorded that inventory for YEARS and finally it was presented by a Dale who had kept a copy of the original--and it was accepted. Remember that Elias died intestate and therefore ALL heirs should be listed. In a will one can pick and choose who he wants his property to go to, but without a will ALL heirs are to be acknowledged. And Thomas wasn't there, and neither was Seth's sister Hannah. What happened to her?? After typing these 19 FGSs for the descendants of Thomas and Bratten, no one knows better than I the frequency of the use of the names THOMAS, SETH, and ELIJAH in this family. The name ELIJAH is another way of saying ELIAS. (James 5 :17 in the Bible. ) Names are significant, but still we need proof. A bit of history--Elias, Nathaniel and Charles settled in the Whaleyville, MD area. Elias got land from his father-in-law John Dale, and Elias sold some to Nathaniel and Charles, his brothers. These three brothers, along with a William, were sons of Nathaniel Wale, son of Edward Wale of MD. We know what Elias' inventory says and we have wills from Charles and William, but we never have figured out who the children for Nathaniel were. We have an older and younger Ebenezer, and a Nathaniel Jr., and two Williams doing things together there in Worcester Co, but no proof that they were sons or grandsons of the Whaleyville Nathaniel. None of Thomas Whaleys descendants are named Nathaniel. And none of the my GA Nathaniel's descendants used the name Nathaniel again. Maybe they were all tired of that name and the confusion it caused. MY GA Nathaniel's oldest son was named Ebenezer. (The one and only.) And my GA Nathaniel's second son named two of his first three sons THOMAS and ELIJAH. Those names trickle on down through my Nathaniel's descendants, too. It makes us wonder. So to the cousin group--if you can solve this problem of *naming the parents of Thomas*, please let us know. Ruby and Jackie

    1. THOMAS WHALEY & ELIAS
    2. James Reese
    3. Ruby, There is a lot of documentation that has been brought out indicating that Elias may be the father of our Thomas Whaley. Elias Whaley was married to Martha Dale, dau.of John Dale, Sr. and Martha McKnight. In 1760 John Dale, Sr. sold 180 acres of "Bear's Quarters" to Elias Whaley and in 1770 sold 10 acres to a Seth Whaley. Later Elias sold 100 acres of 'Bears Quarters' to his wife's brother, Thomas Dale but there's no record indicating Elias purchased any more land and his son Seth Whaley/Hester Baker were named as the only next of kin in the household inventory that was settled some years after his death and just before the death of Martha. There probably wasn't a need to list all of his children with so little in the inventory.. John Dale, Sr.'s will bequeathed a slave to his dau. Martha (Dale) Whaley and upon her death to her dau. Hannah Whaley and Seth Whaley. Martha is listed as being married to Elias Whaley. Adam Dale, son of Thomas Dale formed the group that went to Tn. Thomas Whaley, the Evans, Duncans etc were among them. Adam Dale searched for the site I believe abt 1797 or so, and the trip was made a few years later. Knowing that plans were being made to migrate, it might possibly have been a reason to list only one 'next of kin- Seth' on Elias's inventory. Seth remained in Md. Martha McKnight Dale, dau. of Thomas Dale & Elizabeth Evans, md/Josiah Duncan. They had 2 daughters: Nancy Duncan and Henrietta Duncan. Nancy was the 1st wife of Thomas G. Whaley and when she died, Henrietta married Thomas G. Whaley. Thomas G. Whaley was a son of Thomas Whaley and brother of our Elijah Whaley and also went to Tenn. Georgia
