Hi All: At 03:07 PM 5/5/01 -0700, you wrote: >I have different information as to 'place' of birth for my g-grandmother >(DEC 1841) and believe that one is town or village name and one is parish. >I think I should give a town name as place (and cite the other in my notes). >I do not know what the differences are. Also, I am confused as to the >dates given. What was New Monkland prior to 1855, in terms of being a parish? As a general rule of thumb the Scottish parishes were (and may still be) church subdivisions and generally found within a city or town. Sometimes a given parish may have existed outside of any town, in which case it would be listed in the shire. A Shire is the English equivalent to our county. As far as the dates go, can't be sure but suspect they were the month and year followed possibly by the day such as: 651/1 might be read as 1 Jun 1851 or it could be 6 Jan 1851. If anyone else out there has a better understanding of the dates, please advise. Hope this proves helpful. Have a great day and a better tomorrow. -- See Ya' -- Clyde "Clyde Lapsley"<CLapsley@worldnet.att.net>
