    3. Can't believe there are Scottish people who have never heard of the Edinburgh Tattoo!! ~~~~~ The Edinburgh Tatoo sounds beautiful - Thank you for telling about it. I am of Scottish descent - born and raised in Southern California USA - I am looking for my ancestors. I know nothing of Scottish rites or any thing - other than the names of my family whom I am searching for. My 3rd gr grandfather was from around the area of Edinburgh - and I can't find any thing about him. This is a quote from my gr grandfather George Franklin PECKHAM'S memoirs which he wrote in 1907 when he was 65 years old. "My grandfather PECKHAM was born near Edinburgh, Scotland near the middle of the 18th century and entered the medical University of Edinburgh at the age of 20 after taking a thorough course he graduated with honors and commenced his practice near his former home where he married. shortly he made up his mind to try his luck in the new country of America and on his arrival here located near Albany, new York. He raised a family of seven children, 5 boys and 2 girls, of which my father was one. Father was born 10 Dec 1810. Father's brothers were named Lewis, George, Alonzo and Alfonzo. Sisters were Carrilaine and Hester. Father's name was William A.F. [Augustus Franklin] PECKHAM and he was third in line. The children attended such schools as were had at that time. At about 18 years of age, father entered the Theological University of Albany; At about this time Grandfather fell from the roof of his barn and received injuries which caused his death. Grandmother soon moved to Ohio with her family excepting father who stayed at his school and graduated in 1834......." As you can see he told some interesting things about his grandfather [my 3rd gr gf] never saying who he was, or who his wife was - he named the children just fine, but not the parents- SO, I joined this list hoping that someone might know of my PECKHAMS- I have written the University and they find no records that old - I have talked to David DOBSON who teaches at the University - he says that PECKHAM IS NOT a Scottish name - it is an English name. If any of you can help me, I would be most appreciative.. Wilma Fleming Haynes Brookings, Oregon - USA gencon@harborside.com

    1. Re: What is Edinburgh Tatoo?
    2. Hello, Can't believe there are Scottish people who have never heard of the Edinburgh Tattoo!! It is a huge outdoor concert of bands from all over the world and is held at the Edinburgh Castle at night, every night, for three weeks every August. A highlight of each performance is a lone Piper who stands high on the battlements , dressed in full Scottish regalia , and plays his pipes in the darkness with only a spotlight shining on him. Very impressive!! On Saturdays there are two evening performances, and the second, which ends about midnite, is followed by a fireworks display. The castle is packed for every performance, every seat is taken. A glorious show!! Sorry my Scottish pride is showing. Kindest Regards, Pam Renney McKinley at Mesa, Arizona, USA. via Canada and the UK. [ Always looking for RENNEY.]

    3. Pam I would love to go to the Edinburgh Tattoo. I have been once - in 1959 and it was wonderful. In between I have been raising four children and working until I retired three years ago. I only live about 20 miles from Edinburgh but wait and see if you find someone more deserving - and if not, you can e-mail me at dorbax@btinternet.com Greetings for Scotland where it is wet and miserable today! Doreen
