Hi Gayle: At 11:35 AM 3/25/01 -0500, you wrote: >I am just beginning to look for my MACKIE ancestors. What I know is the >family is listed in the 1870 US Pennsylvania Census. Mathew D. According to a copy of the will of Thomas Irwin dated (13/16 Sep 17(56/57 ?) in Chester Co., PA (Will Book B, pp 98-99) one of his witnesses was a Robert Macky. There is some confusion over the date of the will as it was apparently written on 13 Sep 1756 but signed on 16 Sep 1757 and submitted for probate on 22 Dec 1757..! Then too, ca 1818 possibly in KY (Adair or Mercer counties ?) a James W. Mc Kee married Mary C. Lapsley. They had 8 children, 4 each. Checking the book "The Surnames of Scotland, Their Origin, Meaning, and History" by George F. Black, Ph.D. (Edinburgh, Scotland: Birlinn Limited, 1996); ISBN: 1-874744-83-1. On p 523 is a reference to "MACKEE" in Dunguild, Bute in 1506. On p 528 is a reference to "MACKIE", predominantly in Stirlingshire as far back as the 1400's. Then on p 532 is a reference to "MACKYE" which references "MACKAY" in Galloway. Checking for "MACKAY" on p 522 reveals numerous variant spellings which include "MACKIE" and "MACCAY" among others. Hopefully the above information will prove to be of some help. Have a great day and a better tomorrow. -- See Ya' -- Clyde "Clyde Lapsley"<CLapsley@worldnet.att.net>
