    2. Russ, In my family tree there is an Augustine Jean who was a French Hugenot. He lived on the Channel Islands in Jersey. When he came to the states his name was changed to John Gustin. There are enough similarities between the two men to make me wonder if they might be the same. You might try looking up John Gustin and see if you can get anything to match. If you need more info on him let me know. Ken Haney ________________________________________________________________ GET INTERNET ACCESS FROM JUNO! 1. John "Jean" Gaston, the Huguenot
    2. Russ Perry
    3. Fellow researchers: Other researchers of the Gaston name are divided as to where this fellow fled when exiled from France. The ~generally~ accepted story is that he fled to Scotland either bringing his wife (Agnes of Navarre) or marrying her after his arrival in Scotland. That union produced 3 ~known~ sons, all born in Scotland..William b. 1642, John b. 1645 and Alexander b.1648. All three sons went to Ireland ca 1675, settled in Co Antrim for a couple of generations and onward to America. My questions are: how would I go about confirming (if such is the case) John "Jeans" presence in Scotland? (Thanks to Clyde Lapsley's lookup, there were Gastons around the Roxburgshire, "Gastouns....in Lessudden 1552...") Has anyone run across this surmane or does anyone have any thoughts ? Thanks, Russ Perry

    1. List Information
    2. Nathan Zipfel
    3. Welcome to the WGW-SURNAMES-SCOTLAND mailing list! This list is part of the ScotlandGenWeb project and is open to anyone with interest in surname research in Scotland. You may post queries - but the real point of this list is to encourage surname research -- helping researchers find others researching the same name. Nathan Zipfel ScotlandGenWeb Coordinator nate@gte.net ---------------------------------------------------------- PLEASE SAVE THIS PORTION FOR FUTURE REFERENCE: You are currently subscribed in "mail mode", which means that you will receive every posting made to WGW-SURNAMES-SCOTLAND as a separate e-mail. The directions on how to change to digest mode are given below. 1. How to unsubscribe. Send a message to WGW-SURNAMES-SCOTLAND-L-request@rootsweb.com (list version) WGW-SURNAMES-SCOTLAND-D-request@rootsweb.com (digest version) that contains (in the body of the message) the command unsubscribe and no additional text. 2. How to subscribe. Whatever you just did worked, or you'd not be getting this message. But for future reference (for instance, if your subscription is cancelled for whatever reason and you want to resubscribe), just send the command "subscribe" to WGW-SURNAMES-SCOTLAND-L-request@rootsweb.com. 3. How to change to digest mode (several postings are combined and sent to you together as a single large message). There are two steps. First, send the command "unsubscribe" to WGW-SURNAMES-SCOTLAND-L-request@rootsweb.com to discontinue mail mode. Second, send the command "subscribe" to WGW-SURNAMES-SCOTLAND-D-request@rootsweb.com to start receiving digests. 4. How to change to NOMAIL mode. There is no formal NOMAIL mode. All you have to do is follow the directions above and unsubscribe when you want the messages to stop, and then when you want them to start again, simply subscribe again. 5. If you'd like to post a message so everyone on the mailing list receives it, just send it to WGW-SURNAMES-SCOTLAND-L@rootsweb.com. It will then be sent on to everyone in both mail and digest mode. You don't need to send it explicitly to both. For your verification, a transcript of the original subscription request is included below. --

    3. Oh? When you subscribed to this Mailing List what did you do? Use the brain cells and try to remember how you subscribed and then use the same tactics to UNsubscribe .... the word "request" in the email address (or even a PLEASE to the List Owner might be nice) ........ Sorry Folks, but I get a little annoyed with people who can get themselves ON a List then bombard the list trying to get off it ...... 3. Dear Researchers, Thanks to you polite people who have sent me messages-not all have been polite and some were disrespectful. We only had one e-mail address originally and I did not know that my husband(johnfield@home.com) tried to unsubscribe and did not know the procedures. He wanted the messages to be sent to my new e-mail address. Sorry to all for the mistake but it was not my fault. I believe the mistake has been properly taken care of. Karen Field

    3. When you join a list they usually send you a welcoming letter which you're supposed to save. It tells you all the information you need for the list. Failing that, on these mailing lists from rootsweb you usually send it to the same place that you sent it to join up. Just put unsubscribe in the subject box and no message.
