    1. ALEXANDER, REID, LEDINGHAM, GAMMIE
    2. Jan Crane - Couldn't remember what list we had connected on so I've posted to a couple to your attention. My response regarding the subject keeps bouncing back. Message says your server is timing out. Is your email box full by any chance? Get back in touch when you can and I'll send you what I have. ALEXANDER and GAMMIE are incidental to my search belonging to another branch of the family. LEDINGHAM and REID are mine. Very little has been verified by me but the researchers I received the information from are trusted sources. Barbara Sleeper Barbara Sleeper

Robert LAPSLEY married Fanny (Frances ?) RANKINE ca 1830 in Scotland. There is a branch of LAPSLEY living in New Zealand who are direct descendants of this union. 2. Doug McLean
    3. Hi Genealogists Following my invitation to McLean Clan and "septs" of the McLean clan to utilise the McLean Surname Bulletin Board at http://pluto.beseen.com/boardroom/j/53725 for discussion purposes, I have been requested to define the term "sept" The "Collins English Dictionary" describes septs as:- "a clan or group that believes itself to be descended from a common ancestor". Therefore, according to the "Clan McLean Association of Australia Inc." the following surnames are generally considered to be "septs" of the McLean (various spellings) clan: BEATH, BEATON, BETHUNE, BETON, BLACK, CLANACHAN, GARVIE, GILLAN, GILLEAN, GILLIAN, GILLON, GILSEAN, LEAN, MACBETH, MACBEATH, MACBHEATH, MCCORMICH, MCFADDEN, MACFADYEN, MACFADZEAN, MACFERGAN, MACGILVRA, MACGILLVRAY, MACILDUY, MACILVERA, MACILVORA, MACILVORAY, MACLERGAIN, MACPHADDEN, MACRAING, MACRANKIN, MACVEAGH, MACVEY, PATON, PATTEN, PEDEN, RANKEN, RANKIN, RANKINE, RANKING. I have entered this information on the McLean Surname Bulletin Board (listed above) if you are aware of any errors or omissions I would appreciate comments via the Bulletin Board listed in this e-mail. Thank you for your input Regards Doug McLean Australia

    1. CRUMBIE (ABERCROMBIE?)
    2. Joan McCarron
    3. Hello, I'd like to share the clues I have concerning my CRUMBIE (possibly originally ABERCROMBIE??) family. I don't know where in Scotland they originated. James was born in Scotland c1733/34 (from age at death.) He and his brother Robert (year of birth unknown) emigrated to Pennsylvania, USA c1770 where they later married. Brother William and "several other brothers" apparently stayed in Scotland. One (unnamed) sister married in Scotland about 1770 and then emigrated with her husband to Nova Scotia, Canada. I've tried the IGI but can't find all the names in one place at about the right time. If you might be linked with this family, I'd be very glad to hear from you. Thanks! Hi My name is Doug McLean from Australia - within my "Clan McLean Connections" webpage at http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Canyon/6387 I have set up several interactive pages relating to the McLean (various spellings) and related septs. One page relates to "Missing McLeans" where I have listed 124 McLeans who are seeking assistance with a "brickwall" - you may be able to assist these researchers or contribute your own request for inclusion and I invite you to do so. This list can be found at http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Canyon/6387/unconnected.html Another page is set up as a Bulletin Board and can be entered via my home page. This is a new Bulletin Board to which I invite contributions. As a general rule of thumb the Scottish parishes were (and may still be) church subdivisions and generally found within a city or town. Sometimes a given parish may have existed outside of any town, in which case it would be listed in the shire. A Shire is the English equivalent to our county. As far as the dates go, can't be sure but suspect they were the month and year followed possibly by the day such as: 651/1 might be read as 1 Jun 1851 or it could be 6 Jan 1851. If anyone else out there has a better understanding of the dates, please advise. Hope this proves helpful. 3. I have different information as to 'place' of birth for my g-grandmother (DEC 1841) and believe that one is town or village name and one is parish. I think I should give a town name as place (and cite the other in my notes). New Monkland, Lanark (per 1851 Census Index) Rawyards, Lanark (per 1881 Census) At Genuki, I find both locations, but New Monkland also is found in the parish search, while Rawyards is not. For parishes, I also find: 651 New Monkland 1895-1955 651/1 New Monkland, Burgh of Airdrie, 1855-1894 651/2 New Monkland, Landward, 1855-1894 I do not know what the differences are.
