    1. DOW / STOBIE - Perth
    2. Joan McCarron
    3. Dear Listers, Is anyone else tracing Mary R. (STOBIE) and James DOW (carpenter)? Their son, James DOW, was born November1858 in Crail, Fife but his obituary stated that James (Jr.) was of Perth, Scotland. So, I'm wondering if the family spent many years in Perth after the birth of James. In the 1881 census, I have the right James (Jr.) given as a teacher, age 21, in Glasgow. There is a possible family for James Sr. (joiner, age 44, in Perth Middle Church) However, I'm a little reluctant to take them as the correct family because all their birth places are in Perth with no mention of Fife. I'm hoping that someone will have other descendants of James DOW and Mary STOBIE! Keeping my fingers crossed... Thank you for any help! Joan Nova Scotia, Canada

    3. The URL below was posted on the Moravia-L. According to the poster it was in the Eastman's Online Genealogy Newsletter http://www.rootsforum.com/newsletter.htm . The URL points to various research tools/lists that the LDS Family Search (part of their Family History Library) site provides. A few of what I feel are the more interesting features are: 1. Outline maps of various countries defining county/parish/township lines both present day and in the past. 2. Word lists (for translation). 3. Letter writing guides. Though a lot of the features are more helpful to people researching within non-english speaking countries, I feel it is probably worth a look. Copy and paste the URL into your browser making sure that you get the whole address. It is going to split. be sure to copy and paste all of it. You may only get half of the address on your first copy attempt. Just copy the remaining and paste it on the end of the first. http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/RG/frameset_rhelps.as p?Page=./research/type/Map.asp&ActiveTab=Type __________________________________________ Ever Wonder? __bill kollar Upstate New York, USA Chasing: RIACH, PATERSON, ANDERSON, DAVIDSON Ballater, Aberdeenshire, Scotland DOWDEN, PHILLIPS, ROGERS Newport, Monmouthshire, Wales KOLLAR, SEFCOVIC, HESEK Kuty, Slovakia

    3. Hello List, I am new to this list. I am searching for George WHITE, born about 1800 in Scotland. Unknown for sure the area, but it may have been near Edinburgh. I have a note from someone telling a cousin what is known of him. Apparently, George was a very stubburn lad. He wanted to come to America and settle. Well, this didn't agree with his papa, so he runs away. His papa catches up to him near Edinburgh. Papa consents and gives his permission for him to go to America. By 1825, a son is born to him, William Alexander WHITE. They were located near Wheeling at this time. By 1840, they were in Memphis, Tn. George's occupation was said to be with the railroad. He was said to be on the first train to cross Ms? (Need to know what company the first train was with?) By 1853, William Alexander is getting married in Ms. I have much of his line down. But need help finding more on George WHITE, born Scotland. Can anyone help? Thanks, Debbie
