I am trying to trace an Alexander Smith BURNETT who emigrated to Barbados in the early 1860's (or late 1850's) and was married (don't know when/where) to a Mary Agnes ALLENDER. They had many children in Barbados, but Mary Agnes died there in 1876 and by 1881 ASB was back in England (London area) working as an actuary, with a new wife and his children also. Was there any pattern of Scots working in Barbados (St Michael) in the 1850/1860 period? He was a professional, an actuary, so I doubt his posting was military, though it could have been government-related. He may have been associated with a banana or other plantation, per family lore. Hi Keith: At 01:11 AM 2/19/01 +0000, you wrote: > Hello fellow posters am researching the surname Tait. >especially Robert Mofitt Tait d.o.b. unknown p.o.b. unknown and his son John Henry Tait d.o.b. 28 March 1880 p.o.b. unknown. Not much info to go on, but checking the book: "The Surnames of Scotland, Their Origin, Meaning and History" by George F. Black, Ph.D.; (Edinburgh, Scotland: Berlinn Limited, 1996); ISBN: 1-874744-83-1 on pp 761-762 is a description of the origins of the Tait surname. The author indicates that the surname is primarily from the Edinburgh area as early as 1362 with a branch in Orkney ca 1575; and concludes by identifying Archibald Campbell Tait (1811-1882), b in Edinburgh who became the Archbishop of Canterbury. Hope this information proves helpful. Have a great day and a better tomorrow. -- See Ya' -- Clyde "Clyde Lapsley"<CLapsley@worldnet.att.net>

I am new to this list. I have finally worked my way toward my Scotland roots to research my great-grandfather. I have some family history which states he was born in Glasgow, Scotland, to George Bridges and Sarah Elizabeth, maiden name unknown, Bridges. They may have married around 1837-1846 in Glasgow. My great-grandfather was born on 10 January 1847. I estimate his parents may have born in the 1817-1827 time frame in Scotland. Tom Bridges came to America with a dance troup from New York and may have been a stow away. He found his way to Alabama around 1876-1878, where he married a girl who was born in Alabama. They married in Escambia/Conecuh County Alabama in 1878. Very little family information exists on Thomas "Tom" Bridges. He named his sons: Jesse born 1882, Thomas born 1888, Robert born 1890 and Edward born 1894. He had two daughters named: Nancy Catherine and Sarah Elizabeth. Tom Bridges' parents: George and Sarah Elizabeth Bridges reportedly owned a dairy farm. I would appreciate any information on the Bridges surname or tips on how I can research my Scotland ancestors. Thank you. Sara in Texas sfharms@mindspring.com
Keith Tait, Did any of your Taits emigrate to NY? Linda W.
