    3. Can anyone tell me how to tell if a Captain was in the Merchant Navy or something else? I have a Captain Patrick Stafford who was still working (from Wexford) in 1901 but was retired in 1911. All I know is that he used to bring back things from "far eastern" places. Incidentally he shot a crewmember on board ship for some sort of bad behaviour, but on return to Saltmills he was shunned by the locals for doing so.
