Hi Cyril: Thanks very much for your post, as I was able to get a birdseye view of Castletown up northeast of Gorey which I believe was the town where my original emigrant Thomas Sinnott was born. I also noticed that there were three other Castletowns, but I believe this is the one as his parents and grandparents all came from that area and Arklow in Co.Wicklow. I do have another question, What do the suffixes Cool, Kil, Bally Ballin and Barra mean before a lot of the towns names ???? is there a site that explains this naming pattern ??? Well I can help with some of those or at least point to possibilites Bally is an Anglicization of the Irish word Baile. It literally means home or town (As in Baile Atha Cliath, town of the hurdle ford, or Dublin) but in town naming it could be as large as Dublin to as small as a four house hamlet. Cool is probably Cuil or corner, nook Kil is Cill a very old word for church. Kilkenny Canice's Church, Killpatrick well figure it out <g> Ballin could be a variant of Bally or Balla (wall) with the diminutive suffix -ín added. Barra is bar which I would take in the geographic sense not the thing you put your pint on. There are other possibilities rich -- "Outside of a dog, a book is man's best friend; inside of a dog, it's too dark to read." - Groucho Marx Rich Hansen [email protected] [email protected]
Hi Ed, Rich Hansen seems to have covered most of it, but if you do a Google search you can find a lot of information on there from various sources. Like all things they are open to interpretation. People from Northern Ireland can sometimes be more "Irish" than we down South would consider normal, but then the real Ireland exists in our imagination and hearts, not in political boundaries. They have different touches to the Language up there that are just as intriguing! There is a book Called Irish Place Names by P.W Joyce available for around US $7.50 or £4.00 or Can $8 and even Aus.$9.75. I'm sure you would get it from the likes of Amazon.com or even a good local bookshop the ISBN number is : 0862811279 in paperback. Google lists some 496,000 pages on Irish place names so it's a case of take your pick on line or buy the book. You have to look around for things, it's all in the imagination, that's the beauty of the Irish. slan Cyril Newsome Loch Garman... ----- Original Message ----- From: "edbld" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Monday, March 20, 2006 3:33 AM Subject: Re: [WEX] Now look at this! > Hi Cyril: > Thanks very much for your post, as I was able to get a birdseye view of > Castletown up northeast of Gorey which I believe was the town where my > original emigrant Thomas Sinnott was born. > > I also noticed that there were three other Castletowns, but I believe this > is the one as his parents and grandparents all came from that area and > Arklow in Co.Wicklow. > > I do have another question, What do the suffixes Cool, Kil, Bally Ballin and > Barra mean before a lot of the towns names ???? is there a site that > explains this naming pattern ??? > > Edd Sinnett in Florida > > > ----- Original Message ----- > From: "Cyril Newsome" <[email protected]> > To: <[email protected]> > Sent: Sunday, March 19, 2006 9:43 AM > Subject: [WEX] Now look at this! > > > > Now here's something that you should all find interesting! > > > > http://gplan.wexford.ie/wexford_gplan/ > > > > It's a birds eye view of Co.
