my great-grandparents john and catherine byrne (nee pender) were born around 1840 in co. wexford. john was a soldier in the english army and apparently was stationed in nova scotia around about 1864. around about 1868 he and his family came to gibraltar, presumably on service and settled here for good. i would be very grateful for any help in finding out further information about them and can assist in providing information from gibraltar, regards john byrne
My ancestor John Byrne died 1761 in Doonooney, Adamstown, is buried in Taghmon. He had three sons, Patrick, John and Peter. John or Patrick had a son, Patrick, born 1762 Patrick had 4 sons, James 1800-1872, Daniel who married Anty (Anastasia), William 1805-1889 who married Margaret Lambert, Edward Byrne who "married" Bess Pender For obvious reasons, people tended to marry within an extended family, so your John might well have married (say) a second cousin. Edward and Bess had a daughter, Fanny Byrne, 1838 - 1892, who married Marks Walsh in Rathangan in 1863. Conceivably your John was a nephew of Edward and/or Catherine was a niece of Bess? But I think we might be in the right area based purely upon the surnames. Have you any more clues? Any scraps of family tradition?
