    3. I have been searching for my great-grandmother Margaret Stafford. She was born abt January 1, 1850. When she died March 14, 1884 at Baltimore Maryland her obituary said she was 34. The obituary also said she was from Ballyvarig which I'm told by kind sources on these websites is not correct. The error is probably due to the providers accent and the listeners interpretation. One of my uncles said she was from Enniscorthy. So, I'm trying to narrow down the search. It has been suggested that I try Ballyveroge, Ballyvergin, and Ballyverrage. I'm aware that a lot of records are nor available in the time frame I'm seeking help but I keep hoping. Anyhow I would appreciate any suggestions that may help me. Margaret was married in Baltimore to my great-grandfather Edward Kehoe. One piece of information I find interesting is that Margaret's daughter Catherine Kehoe married Thomas Cushing (Cushion). Thomas' family lived in Ramsgrange, St James Church, Cool, and in New Ross with his mother Mary Whalen Cushing. I have seen many examples of families watching out for other families from their homeland, and I suspect that Margaret may have known Thomas's family back in Ireland. The kehoes were seaman and ship engineers, and Thomas actually became an ship engineer too, so maybe the Kehoe family had an influence on him having a career on the water. Thanks for your help! Mike

    2. Since I have a Margaret Stafford born Rathumney Ballyculane Wexford who went to Baltimore I have been looking at your family. I used the Ellis site to see who each went to to see the progression of my family since they quickly followed one by one. If I have the right people yours: Edward Kehoe came 1848 Margaret Stafford probably late 1860's. And Thomas New Ross T./Mary St St. Mary's Bantry Wexford Household Cushion Mary(53) laborer/widow Thomas(10)-Kate Bourke(60)boarder/not married if this is him in 1901 1910 on. Is he the one listed on Ellis as a crew member? So (just a guess) they probably met in Baltimore. The Keogh's lived in Canton near the port of Baltimore so a chance to meet a seaman. So many Staffords in Wexford and they all seem to have a Margaret. Not too many in Baltimore. I know this does not help but have you looked at immigration records or checked church records for Baptism and wedding sponsors as these may be relatives to Margaret? Are you in Baltimore to do this? 3. Hi Joan! You seem to know a lot about my family. No I am not in Baltimore but I have had the help of many kind people who have checked church records for me. I am not positive but I think Edward arrived later then 1848 in Baltimore. First he arrived as a (Flinn, misspelling for Flynn). Edward's father James likely died in Ireland when Edward was 9 years old which would have been about 1850. His mother Mary Furlong Kehoe married a John T. Flynn. He came to the US with Mary, and Mary's children John, Edward, James and Catherine. Edward had many troubles getting a pension for his service in the US Navy during the Civil War because of discrepancies in his name and age while he was in the Navy. When Margaret Stafford arrived I'm not sure. She was born in 1850 in Enniscorthy and married Edward in 1872. She died in 1884. I think the Thomas you are referring to is my grandfather Thomas Cushing (Cushion) who was from St. James in Ramsgrange. The entry you posted for Thom! as is likely Thomas living on Mary Street with his mother Mary Whelan Cushing. Yes the Kehoes may have first lived in Canton. They also lived on Cambridge Street, Essex Street and later Castle Street. I don't know if Thomas came through Ellis Island-if he did I wasn't aware of that. You are right Thomas probably met the Kehoes in Baltimore. Thomas married Catherine Kehoe the daughter of Edward Kehoe and Margaret Stafford. Thomas and Catherine's first son was Edward. Thomas and Catherine were my grandparents. After Baltimore Thomas and Catherine lived in Philadelphia. Most of the Kehoes in the 1870's were seaman. Actually Edward my great-grandfather was on a ship called the Sangamon during the Civil War. James another son of Edward and Catherine's served as the chief engineer on the SS Minnihaha. He was one of 54 survivors when the trip was sunk by the Germans in WWI. Actually he lived in England near London. I have recently had some leads for Margaret Stafford and am checking now. I know she was from Enniscorthy and in her death obit it says she was a native of Ballyvarig. At first I learned that there wasn't any town land by that name. Only today I had a separate note that a Ballyvarig did exist at one time and there are a number of Staffords lived in that area. I need to follow up there more. I appreciate your interest and help in assisting me in finding information about my family. Thanks Joan! 3. Hi Michael - I don't have an answer to your question but according to John Grenham (Tracing Your Irish Ancestors) the Catholic records for Enniscorthy are available on microfilm at the National Library, Dublin. These need to be searched in person of course, which is not possible for many of us, but it is possible to get a researcher or kind volunteer to check them. If she was COI then I'm not sure what the parish would be (possibly Fethard) but there are some Wexford records available at the RCB Library, again in Dublin and again would need a personal visit to check. As you have probably seen, there are 2 STAFFORDs in Ballyvaroge in the Griffiths Valuation - probably taken in a similar timeframe to Margaret's birth. Hope some of this helps a little. Others may be able to add more. Regards, Patsy - New Zealand Sent: Tuesday, January 13, 2009 7:53 AM Subject: [WEXFORD] STAFFORD >I have been searching for my great-grandmother Margaret Stafford. 3. Mike, I did not follow your mails initially so don't know why you ruled out Ballyvarig. My mother who grew up in Stonehouse (near Fethard) told me the area known as Ballyvaroge/Ballyfarnoge is also known locally as Ballyvarig. There are still Staffords living there and this family would be buried in Poulfur as they are in Fethard parish. 3. Mike, I forgot to say that other side of the road from Ballyvarig would be considered Ballycullane parish - maybe this is not a help to you? Also, one of my Staffords was a ship's captain.
