these are from a place called Templeshanbo in north co. Wexford...also called Templeshambo - St. Colman's Church (COI).....and they are the same family, but they show the difficulties with names and spellings and pronounciations. There is the name Kearns which is how the name would be spelled - and then there is Kerens - how it can be pronounced. and the Kearns stone is older than the Kerens. There is a placename - Kiltely but it really is Kiltealey. same thing, same pronounciation for me but a different spelling and then we have Moses and Mogue - one on each stone....and looking at the dates and ages here - Moses wife Mary died in 1831 aged 47. Now, if she had lived to 1859 when Mogue died - she would have been 75 - just the right age to be the wife of Mogue - if he was Moses and not Mogue..... *But* he probably was - no one will ever know for absolutely positively and definitely that these were the same man - unless he left a will somewhere and both names are mentioned in it....unlikely - or unless this is another well documented family and their descendants come and tell me I'm right :-) The main thing though and the importance of stones is that they bring us back past the time of civil records -they tell us who was who in the family, their ages.....the older ones tell us the wifes maiden name (usually). The graveyard is Church of Ireland - Brian cantwell has not noted any RC stones there - but I don't think he does note any I.H.S. stones in any of the graveyards he's surveyed. That's a pity. many Protestant churches were built on the sites of old chuches - medieval buildings - most of them were at some stage RC...never, ever turn down info from any graveyard which you are told is Protestant.......because when you head into it yourself - you'll find loads and loads of Catholic stones.
