Most of the Wexford Irish who emigrated to Canada did so because as a result of the Wexford Rebellion in 1798 and the War of 1812. After the war of 1812, England was concerned with protecting Canada from invasion from the United States and was particulary concerned with the area of land between the St. Lawrence and Ottawa where it was building the Rideau Canal. It didn't really trust the Loyalists who settled on the banks of the St. Lawrence as they had ties (i.e. family) in the States. The Irish protestants who had sustained serve losses during the Wexford rebellion were (as were the Scots) concidered loyal to the crown and were offered land. Much of this was done through the Perth and Richmond Military Settlements (even though the receipents were not necessarily part of the militiary).
