I agree with the reasons mentioned by others as to why so many came to Canada just after the Napoleonic Wars. Also, many of these first settlers to crown lands in Canada served in the British military, stationed in Upper Canada, during the War of 1812. They were encouraged to settle the land. Somewhere there is a list of names of memebers of the military stationed in Upper Canada on the web but I'm not sure where. I'll try and search my files. I think my ggreatgrandfather, John Grant (1837-1875), emigrated from Wexford ca. 1840 as an orphan and lived with some of those original settlers from Wexford. Lucy
