My late husband's grandfather, Patrick John COONEY came to Connecticut from Mohurry, Enniscorthy, Wexford. Patrick's parents were Richard COONEY and Dorathea (Dora, Dorah, Dolly) LEARY. Their birthdates are around 1828. They married in Rathnure on 13 January 1856 and died, 11 months apart, in 1906. Richard and Dora's graves are in Ballindaggin, Coolacarney, Old Cemetery When we visited Mohurry, we were told LEARY and O'LEARY were rather interchangeable. Do you have any information that makes all this sound familiar? (also, I kept coming across vital records for Patrick COONEY and wife Anastatia "Anty"LEARY and wondered if brothers married sisters) Any clues? Thanks, Jane -----Original Message----- From: Eileen O'Leary <geneeol@optusnet.com.au> To: wexford <wexford@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sun, Mar 27, 2011 11:31 pm Subject: Re: [WEXFORD] WEXFORD Digest, Vol 6, Issue 14 No. There are lots of O'Leary lines in Co. Jane, we corresponded in 2005. Yes the O' in O'Leary (and other names) dropped in and out of use over the years. Around the turn of the century the O' wasn't used very much. It's still the same name. Yes, it was also common for families to intermarry more than once in the same families. If you have the correct dates of death you could look up the details on familysearch.org and then apply for their certificates at the GRO site. The certificates may show that the deaths were registered by a family member. These in turn may lead you to an O'Leary line on the 1911 census.
