    1. [WEXFORD] FURLONGs in RHODE ISLAND, USA
    2. BILL DORGAN
    3. Listers: I have been following the FURLONG discussion with interest. Does anyone have FURLONGs from Ireland who went to RHODE ISLAND in the early to mid-1800s from Newfoundland or Nova Scotia? I have a JAMES FURLONG who appears on the 1850 US Census of RHODE ISLAND. He was married three times. His first wife was CATHERINE, the second HANNAH and the third MARY DONAHUE. JAMES and all his wives died and are buried in RHODE ISLAND. I know this is sketchy. Just throwing out a test balloon. 3. Hello Judy, I have put in a lot of queries to the list about the Furlong family of Enniscorthy that I am researching, but never got a response. If you have time to check your database for them I would be very pleased. James Furlong, of Enniscorthy, married Jane Frayne, d/o Michael Frayne of Killeen, & his wife Jane Saunders. Their son, Saunders Furlong married 1779, his first cousin, Mary Frayne d/o Richard Frayne, brother of Jane. Jane Frayne Furlong MAY have been born ABOUT 1705.I have not been able to locate any real records but have the marriage years of different siblings so am hazarding this guess. I do not think there would be too many Furlongs named Saunders, so am hoping that you may find some reference to him that will give a firm date and place of residence. Burial records would be a goldmine. I hope this is not an imposition. Thank you, Marjorie Frayne Hankins, Ontario, Canada. -----Original Message----- From: Judy Picard [mailto:judypicard@yahoo.com] Sent: August 28, 2009 10:10 PM To: wexford@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [WEXFORD] Report on Wexford Enniscorthy New Ross Research Michael, I have volumes of stuff on Furlongs in Co Wexford. Have about 7,000 Furlongs in a database already. If you can give me a short list of names, dates, and places, I will look thru what I have. I also have about 2,000 Newfoundland Furlongs which is pretty complete. When I was in Wexford, I copied their complete file on the Furlongs which included a faint handwritten report on all the Furlongs that were born, married, and died in Co Wexford that Ian Cantwell found on the films. [This is a report Ian did for a John Furlong of Ontario, not the memorials.] And speaking of the memorials, I copied all the Furlong gravestones info Brian Cantwell found for the Furlongs. And gobs more stuff. These copies I have not computerized yet. A lot of it may already be in the database. Those not in it are arranged mostly by location - both the bmd in the church films and the memorials so I won't be able to find anyone without a location. EVERYONE: THIS IS ONLY FURLONG. Please don't ask me about anyone else. Some places have changed names - been absorbed into another town, etc. Give both. judy ----- Original Message ---- > From: Michael J. 3. Joan, I forgot to mention this in my earlier email. If this AOL info doesn't work, Google the phrase....'question marks in emails'. You'll get a lot of hits. I chose the AOL one because it's the provider you use. Good luck. 1. Re: [WEXFORD] WEXFORD Digest, Vol 4, Issue 98 Wexford library
    2. I just had to agree with Judy, WEXFORD library is the best in Ireland and very probably the world!! I have lived in lots of countries and have never known such a group of dedicated librarians, they do everything within their power to help and are so friendly, it makes one proud to have had ancestors from Wexford. When I was there, I not only had help from the librarians but also local people who found my GGGrandfathers service record in Dublin and arrived with it at the library the following day, he had over heard? my conversation with one of the librarians and wanted to help. What a star. I loved Ireland and there was something very magical about sitting in pew at the old church in Oulart, where my forefathers had been christened. I hope as many of you as possible, who are researching their family history will get a chance to visit. My GGGrandfather emigrated to South Africa in 1861, but the family home in the Cape was always called Wexford, after my visit to Ireland I understood why. Kate Crisp (Kerwan)

    3. Peggy, I just noticed your Furlong query; I have some Furlongs from the Rathangan area who were neighbors of Marc Cody who emigrated to PEi in the early 1800's. Marc's father wrote him in 1820 and mentioned that neighbor Mark Furlong had married Meg Ratford of Cullenstown. Marc Cody's father was John Cody of Rathangan. 3. Hello Judy, a great summary of what to do when to search for family in Wexford. About 7 years ago I was new to looking for family and I wish I had these guide lines back then. I went to Enniscorthy and Wexford town and didn't come back with anything. Since then I have been able to find my CUSHION family in Ramsgrage and New Ross (Mary Street). In addition with some obituaries I learned that my gggrandmother Mary Furlong Kehoe (later Flynn) was also from Ramsgrange. She died in Baltimore. Mary came to the US with a Thomas and Bridget Furlong. One of their children eventually resided in New Orleans. Obituaries have helped some but now I want to go back to Ireland with what I know. My uncle used to tell me my great-grandmother Margaret Stafford Kehoe was from Enniscorthy. I went to Enniscorthy and didn't find anything back then. He obituary stated that she was from Ballyvarig. Well, with some help from subscribers I learned that Ballyvarig in Wexford was more formally known as Ballyvarogue. I would like to go there since Stafford's still live there. I tried contacting them but it hasn't worked out. >From your information I think I should be able to learn possibly a great deal more. I'm interested in your Furlongs too. Thanks for sharing! WEXFORD TOWN The County library in Wexford has THE BEST in Ireland. Far better than Dublin for Wexford research. Go there for any County Research. Probably won't open until 9:30am. I had no real problem for free parking as I had handicapped thingy I brought from states. Not only do they have paper and microfilm copies of the church records, they also have indexes for some and some name files. Their collection of Wexford history books is the best. Online they have the historical/genealogical society's journals. Wexford library allows you to make paper printouts of the films and any other records. The photocopier works just fine however some of the records are faint and not too much can be done about that. The microfilm printer wasn't working well when I was there but they recommended I take pics with my cell phone of the microfilm reader's screen. When you're not on the reader, then's the time to go thru the paper printouts of the films [not all are on paper], the paper indexes of the films, make copies of the relevent Cantwell's memorials, the name files, etc. Tried but did not go to the archives. They sent me to the library for gene research. Be sure to go thru the indexes in backs of Wexford related books. Especially if you think your ancestor may have been in the 1798 rebellion. I stayed at the hostel [20+ euro] in Wexford. Very fine except you can only park across the street between 8pm and 8am. Otherwise they'll drag you out of bed to move your car. They can direct you to a parking spot a block or so away. I had very poor WIFI there [and be sure to turn the electric sockets on!]. use maps. Did not get to re-enactment village. Only used bookstore in town never has much on local history. ENNISCORTHY The records in Enniscorthy are generic. If you've read Furlong's, Whelan's, etc. books on the rebellion you already know more than there is in the 1798 center. The Enniscorthy library is minimal - they'll refer you to Wexford for research. There is no hostel in Enniscorthy. New Ross and Wexford town are 1/2 hour beautiful drive away. NEW ROSS New Ross doesn't have any films but they do have several local historical society journals on shelf as well as history books. The MacMurrough Farm Hostel just north of New Ross is superb! The rooster is not allowed in the bungalows! 20euro per nite for single. Private rooms for double.- directions are great! Walmart style superstore not far away. At the foot of the library hill is the upstairs cafe. GO THERE! Had memorable tender succulent lamb shank with 4 different types of Irish potatoes. Forgot whatever meals I had. Don't try driving thru ancient cemetery. I was so sorry I did. narrow lanes become like bicycle paths! No turnaround! Ruins galore. Ship worth the visit. FERNS Didn't get there. Most records burned. DUBLIN Main library very hospitable but you must check your gear in free lockers. May take computer and camera. Reading room on top floor, film readers on second floor. When they saw my condition after two flights [only one film at a time], they offered the readers in an adjacent room to me. Must get permission to make prints off films at 50 cents ea. Not allowed to take pics of church films. Will allow you to take photos of many stuff. Has gobs of city directories back into 1800s some incl Wexford. You will regret not doing your church film research down in Co Wexford. Get permission from librarian to take pics. Their policy is very good. Genealogy in main public library bldg. doesn't have much to offer the experienced researcher. Will send you down the block to the Archives. Archives has all kinds of goodies. If I was ever to get an ulcer, it would've developed there. The head Archivist demands you get permission before copying anything. He does not delegate to anyone! He was on 2-week holiday when I was there in beginning of July so I couldn't copy anything! Not even photos from printed books. They have originals of documents going back a millennium! You can only hand copy in pencil or transcribe into your computer. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions. judy FURLONGS & KAVANAGHS of Co WEXFORD Wexford Surnames List http://homepages.ihug.co.nz/~hughw/wexford.html ------------------------------- To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to WEXFORD-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message Checked by AVG - www.avg.com Version: 8.5.375 / Virus Database: 270.13.71/2330 - Release Date: 08/27/09 18:02:00

    3. Judy; I have been trying to locate the marriage record of my great great grandfather and his wife. I think they were from County Wexford. All the information I have now is that they immigrated to Port Hood Nova Scotia around the early 1820's. Most of the people that settled in that area of Nova Scotia were from County Wexford. My great great grand parents were Richard Harding and Bridget Murphy. They were married in Ireland. Could you steer me in the right direction as to where I may get some information? 3. Michael, I have volumes of stuff on Furlongs in Co Wexford. 1. [WEXFORD] Report on Wexford Enniscorthy New Ross Research
    2. Judy Picard
    3. List Administrator: You have my permission to put this in files area. Saves lots of nickels but more important, paper is heavy. Your luggage may become overweight! Or, not. Mine was because of the volumes of Furlong info they had. In Wexford, you are guaranteed a microfilm reader for two hours if you make an appt which is easy to do. I only used first appt. Cancelled the rest because of paper copy availability which was much easier and faster. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions. judy FURLONGS & KAVANAGHS of Co WEXFORD

    1. [WEXFORD] Marriage LAMBERT/SPARROW
    2. David Sharman
    3. Dear List Can anyone help me with finding the marriage of James LAMBERT/Maria SPARROW c1830 likely to be in the diocese of Ferns. James and Maria farmed at Great Hayestown and baptised their children James, Robert Percival, Edward Percival and William at Rathaspeck church but James and Maria did not marry there. It is possible that Maria was a Quaker as I have been told that SPARROW was a common quaker name. Associated names for her are John and Anne SPARROW as they were sponsors for James and Maria's children's baptisms. Regards Sue Sharman New Plymouth, NZ
