    1. [WEXFORD] Stephen Doyle and Mary Cass
    2. Como, Patricia E
    3. I am looking for the parents/siblings and any other information on Stephen Henry Doyle and Mary Cass who were married in Kilrane Parish, County Wexford, by Father Edward Doyle, in November 1857. Their first child, Mary Ellen Doyle, was born 25 December 1858 in Charlestown, Suffolk, MA. They appear on the 1860 census in Suffolk Co., MA, with Mary Ellen. They had many other children born in Massachusetts, Canada, and VT. Their daughter Bridget Ann was born St. Alban's, VT on May 4, 1867. Bridget is my maternal great grandmother. Stephen and Mary (Cass) Doyle appear on the Berkshire County, MA Census for 1870. On the 1880 census, Mary is widowed and living in Pittsfield, MA. I will appreciate any information on this family, either in Ireland or the U.S. Regards, Tish Como

    1. [WEXFORD] The use of Irish Maiden names
    2. Jane O'Brien
    3. Many's a time I see queries on the various newsgroups about the use of Irish maiden names. Funny that I never thought to question it. I imagine that it is related to our Irish names - that is, names through Irish. When we use our names through Irish - the literal translation for a woman is 'daughter of' - Ní XX and for a married woman it is 'wife of' - Uí XX. We never stop being the daughter of whoever. As a married woman I can chose whether or not my name will be written as wife of or daughter of. and then again , through Irish I can write my surname in either of its variants...the way they spell it in Cork which is where my family originally came from or the way they spell it in Galway which is where they migrated to way back whenever. If I was an Irish speaker back in the 1800's and my husband died, I would automatically revert to my maiden name - daughter of....or I could say I was the widow of - but as Gaeilge that would be too long...... So, I guess that's why so many used their maiden name. A bit of female emancipation the Irish way. The mother was a very important person in Irish society, in a way we were a matriarchal society.....while she didn't earn the money she ruled the roost....in most cases. There is an Island - in the South Pacific I think, called little Ireland....and the people there - their society is very much a matriarchal one. The children they take their mothers surname such as it is. Jane

    3. My grandfather, James Loftus Thomas, was born March 10, 1881 in Wexford, Ireland. In 1906 he moved to Oakland, California. Married an America, Alhilda Wilmena Johnson and lived there until his death on July 5, 1937. He worked for the Moore Ship Yard in Oakland as a Boiler Maker. I am told his father was Albert William Thomas. I have a 1920 census of him in Oakland, I have his WWI draft registration card, his death certificate and his children's birth certificates. On his WWI Draft Registration Card dated September 12, 1918. It has checked under Alien, non-declarant. Does this mean he didn't apply for naturalization? I am confused because in the 1920 census it lists nothing about citizenship. I was going to try to get his birth certificate but it ask when he emigrated and I can't find him before 1920 in the census. I am not 100% sure of his father's name, just what the family told me. Any ideas?? I have been looking for his man for almost 3 years and am getting no where. Janet Hanson hanson@idir.net

    1. [WEXFORD] I'm New - Looking for Moran and Comerford
    2. CatherineTannock
    3. Laughlin MORAN and Patrick COMERFORD and their families immigrated to Canada circa 1818 from Wexford. Am interested in finding any record of them (or their families) in Ireland. There is a 95% chance (I'm awaiting the documents which may prove it) that these are my ggg-grandfathers.

Is there anyone else searching this name. Again thank you for this list, and thank you celestine. Joan rolfes@erols.com

    1. [WEXFORD] DRUHAN
    2. Margaret Black
    3. I am going to try this one more time. Are there any Druhans out there who are living in Wexford or near by. I am trying to find the parents of our gggrandfather. His name was John Druhan and he was born in 1816 in County Wexford. It has always been told that he was born or lived in Lady's Island. He married first to Johanna Hearn also of County Wexford in Sutton around 1840. He removed to Quebec, Canada before 1845 because he married a second time to Ellen Barden of Fethard on Sea, County Wexford in Quebec in 1845. Mary Ellen Barden died in Quebec in 1885 and he moved with his son James Druhan to Mobile AL where he died in March of 1891. Any help with finding his beginnings would be appreciated. Thanks Margaret margblack@mindspring.com

    1. [WEXFORD] TERRELLS OF WORLD UNITE!!!
    2. Hello, Cousins, I am sure I have left some off this list and have some on who would rather not be associated with the rest if us. But I am working on it. And if you aren't a TERRELL or like surname, welcome anyway. I am carry a meeting of the Terrible Terrells for a round up on my behalf. As some of you know I am a lost sheep. I can go no further back that my grandfather because he ran away with a pretty (I hope so!!) circus performer around 1926-27 while serving as postmaster in Memphis. I am a CPA and I just don't seem to have the hours in the day to accomplish all that needs to be done. I cannot sleep tonite for some reason and so this partially the reason for this note. I have very little research time. This is why I need a little of you help to point me in the right direction. Here is the way it play out. My grandfather's name was Chilton DeWitt TERRELL. From looking at the migration of Terrells and like surnames and their concentrations for the first 200 years of settlement and movement West, the migration of my line of Terrells probably went from VA, NC, TN, KY, AR,MO,TX, and maybe to OH to North and GA in South. Chilton Dewitt TERRELL was allegedly born around 1890 in St. Francis County, Forest City, AR. There is a land grant record of a Terrell there around 1840 and there exists a DeWitt County, AR.and a Terrell County, GA ,etc. So we did spread out. I know my grandfather had several brothers and sisters and that his parents must have died while they were young. Here are the links I am trying to run down: ALLEN, FERGUSON, CHILTON, MAY, DAY, AND DEWITT and where and when they merged with the TERRELLS.. I am leaning towards Ireland as the start point because some were Catholic. And the Tyrrells of Ireland revolted several times against the English. They had to go somewhere; at least those that survived Cromwell, etc. I cannot find where they followed DeLacy to Russia or Capt Richard Tyrrell back to Spain. I think most records in the old country both in Ireland and England have long been destroyed or turned to dust. If any of you have any links or information sources to the TERRELLS who may have traveled that route from the VA or NC and the other surnames mentioned above linked with a Terrell, please let me know. Obviously Terrell(like surnames) could have been changed many times along the way in order to avoid the law and shotgun weddings. It is interesting to read the history of the Tyrrells in England and Ireland; however, I need that special link especially to the Chiltons and the Dewitts - they have to be surnames and I have pretty well discounted the Chiles Terrell Texas line. Thank you very much for your assistance and I am apologize if I stepped on anyone's toes or inconvenienced anyone in anyway. Warmest regards, Jack Norton Terrell, CPA San Antonio, Texas

    2. Sandy Fice
    3. Hi Folks, I've been following this list for a few months but this is my first posting. I'm searching for additional info on the Plummers of Enniscorthy /Bunclody area. Wm. PLUMMER (1727-1773), farmer, married in 1752 to Mary LAURENSON /Lawrenson. Their children were: John, Anne, William, Thomas, Robert, Richard, RALPH, and Sarah. Many of these folks are buried at Toome(Old Cemetery) at Camolin, or Kilrush Parish (C.of I.) Church Cemetery. RALPH PLUMMER (1765-1834) marr. ELIZABETH JAMES (1771-1840). They arrived in Canada in 1819 and homesteaded at Bolton, Ontario. Their son, William (b. 1797) married Martha Ann GRAFTON in 1823. Looking forward to making a possible connection with any of these families, and sharing info. Sandy in Ontario

    1. [WEXFORD] Michael O'BRIEN
    2. Stopps
    3. Hello all from a newcomer! I recently discovered that my O'BRIENs came from Enniscorthy sometime after 1840. The sad story is that Michael O'BRIEN drowned in a Peat Bog around this time and his wife, only known as Mrs. Mike O'Brien and her children immigrated to Canada--possibly to the Stoco Parish in Ont. and finally to pioneer an O'BRIEN settlement on the Old Town Line near Bancroft, Ont. The 5 children that I know are: John(1832-1909) who married Jane LEVEQUE(These 2 are my gg-grandparents who had 14 children), Ann who married a McCABE, Mary(1840-1925) married to John MURRAY(1832-1909) in Marmora, Martin, and Mathew who also married a MURRAY. Any connections or suggestions? Also, is it possible to somehow find out about poor Michael's death or get a marriage certificate to help figure out Mary's lost surname/ Thanks, Nancy

    1. [WEXFORD] Stafford/Hall
    2. Joan
    3. I am still stumbling through my search for my STAFFORD family from Rathumney and HALL family in Merthyr Tydfil Wales. I searched the 1901 census for New Ross and then discovered that Rathumney is in the parish of Owenduff, so I am waiting for those films. I did discover this family. Mary STAFFORD 45 widow. James STAFFORD 10. Johanna STAFFORD 9. Mary Ann STAFFORD 8. Bridget MURPHY 19 niece. Michael HALL (perhaps Mary's father) 70 Lodger Saddler? Lawrence HALL 26 servant. This family lived 1 mile from my gfathers home, Patrick STAFFORD. Since my gmother went to Ireland as a young girl to be a nanny maybe she had Irish ties. Her name was also Mary Ann. Searching the HALL name a history showed that HALL is Scottish and many were exiled to Ireland with the name being common in Leinster. There are 55 HALLS in the Wexford telephone book on line. Am I grasping at straws? Yes. Wondering if anyone else is looking for HALLS or has come accross the name. Joan rolfes@erols.com

    3. I am a new subscriber trying to find information about the ancestry and siblings of a tailor Thomas NEVIN born 1812 or 1813 to a farmer John NEVIN in Ireland. My family oral tradition uses the phrase " near the border of Wexford and Wicklow" and also the place name Ballymoney. Any references to the name NEVIN in the area before or after 1812 would be appreciated. Thank you. ERIC NEVIN.

    1. [WEXFORD] New To List
    2. Hi Researchers, My great-grandmother, Catherine/Kate WATERS was born 16 May 1872/73 in Arthurstown, Battlestown, New Ross, Co Wexford. I have been unsuccessful finding her birth record. I think I did find her 2 sisters' birth records; Mary born Jan 1865 in Ramsgrange, New Ross. Parents listed as John & Joanna (MCFADDEN) WATERS Ellen born 8 July 1866 in Ramsgrange, New Ross. Parents listed as John & Joanna (FADDEN) WATERS. Notice how one birth record has MCFADDEN & the other is FADDEN My Catherine also had a brother, Edward born abt 1882. John & Joanna WATERS are listed as parents on my Catherine WATER's 16 Feb 1896 marriage in Boston, MA to Joseph BREEN. Joseph BREEN and his twin brother, William were born in Lambeth, Surrey, England 15 July 1872. Their parents were Thomas Francis & Ellen (OLDHAM) BREEN. It is quite possible that Thomas Francis BREEN was from Ireland. Hoping to find a connection. Dyane In MA.
