    1. [WEX] John Esmonde - Wexford, Ireland and Ottawa, Canada
    2. William Esmonde
    3. I need to know the pointof origin ff my gg grandfather. According to his tombstone in Ottawa, Canada he was born in Wexford, Ireland, and died at the age of 80 in 1883. So far I have not been able to determine when or where he emigrated to Toronto, Canada, nor the time and place of immigration to Canada. Although the number of Esmonde surnames is small, I have not been successful to date. I would appreciate hearing from anyone who could help me start my search. I am just beginning the search, so any help would be appreciated. William B. Esmonde

Can you tell me what the >date >means, >and what certificates are being referred to? Thank you, Milli > Re: Index of Wexford Freeman at : http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~hibernia/ Hi Milli, I don't fully understand the meaning and rights of a Freeman, but I think it has something to do with completing a seven year apprenticeship in some sort of trade (Butcher, Baker, Trader etc.), or being the son of a Freeman. I think that the rights of a Freeman within a town or city meant he did not have to pay local taxes. In around 1830, the law changed and it seems to allow any Freeman to have Freeman rights in any town or city in Briton, but he had to produce proof that he was a Freeman. Hence the reason why Wexford Freeman certificates where in the possession of the Liverpool Corporation who deposited them at the Liverpool Record Office. The dates quoted in the index refer to when the man became a Freeman or the date found on a letter from his parish council. If anyone can give more information I would be grateful. Regards, Pat Neill in grey, wet, Liverpool. Searching for the birth place of Isaac NEILL (c.1830), somewhere in Co. Wexford, the son of James & Sarah. ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com

    1. [WEX] POWER/ROSSITER of Wexford.
    2. Wayne Peter Balcombe
    3. Dear Listers, Would welcome any info, connections about the following: Walter POWER married Anstace ROSSITER at Kilmore, Wexford on 29.2.1823. (witn, Nicholas HOWLIN & wife). Children born to marriage: Margaret bapt. 27.2.1829 Kilmore Mary bapt. 3.9.1831 Kilmore Anty bapt. 28.2.1837 Kilmore Patrick bapt. 30.5.1839 Kilmore Richard b.c. 1841 Kilmore (no bapt. found) Richard came to Victoria, Australia. Margaret went to Penna., USA. (desc. traced). Family stories! Richard's claim he came to Oz with a cousin/brother who went straight on to USA. Margaret's claim she went to USA with a couple of siblings. Have checked Oz shipping records and the only realistic entry for Richard has him arriving on the "Globe", Dec 1868. Bingo!! Further check revealed that he travelled with Margaret, John & Mary POWER! All single & irish & listed together. Men were farmers, ladies were servants. Is John a cousin or brother? I must assume he went to USA. What of Mary? Note: Margaret POWER became POWERS in USA ! Am in contact with a POWER family in Wexford and we believe we are related (they have photos of Richard's family, etc) but have no definite proof. They descend from a Walter POWER married Margaret DEVEREUX in 1845. I assume that this Walter is probably the eldest son of Walter & Anstace (perhaps bc 1824, making him 21 yrs when married) or perhaps is a cousin! Any help, comments or info would be greatly appreciated! Andrea Balcombe (nee Power) RMB 1290, Cobden, Victoria, Australia. wp_balcombe@bigpond.com.au

My father once mentioned that we had some distant relatives in Australia. I am wondering if some of the other siblings emigrated there. 1. RE: [WEX] MURPHY family - Vinegar Hill
    2. Bernard Wilson
    3. Vinegar Hill is in Enniscorthy, Co. Wexford. It was the site of battles in at least two wars. In the Rebellion of 1798, Vinegar Hill was the scene of one of the final battles, "the fatal conclave." In the poem, "Requiem for the Croppies," Seamus Heaney wrote, of the Battle of Vinegar Hill: "Terraced thousands died, shaking scythes at cannon. The hillside blushed, soaked in our broken wave. They buried us without shroud or coffin And in August the barley grew up out of the grave." In 1916, Vinegar Hill was the scene of yet another encounter with the British, when Irish soldiers took refuge there after battles in Enniscorthy. The British employed "Enniscorthy Emily," a 15 pounder artillery piece mounted on a train. After firing one shot from across Enniscorthy, the British convinced the Irish to leave the Hill. If your Murphy relatives came "from Vinegar Hill," that means you should probably concentrate your search on Enniscorthy. It so happens that I have a Murphy connection with Enniscorthy, in the person of my great-grandmother. I actually have someone looking into the connection right now in Ireland, so I may have detailed information in a few weeks. 1. [WEX] HENDRICKS family from Wexford town?
    2. I am new to this list and am seeking info on the name HENDRICKS in the first half of the 19th century. I am descended from JAMES HENDRICKS born Wexford in Aug of 1803. His father's first name was PHILIP (I think). JAMES married MARY MEEHAN. They had at least three children born in the 1830's and 1840's: PHILIP, ANNA, and JAMES. The family left Wexford in the 1840's or 1850's and arrived in New Orleans and eventually settled in Louisville, Kentucky. I am seeking any info on this family, or even info on the name HENDRICKS name in Wexford--how common was/is the name, from where families with this name came to the Wexford area of Ireland, and whether there is anyone today with this name who lives in Wexford and who may have a sensw of the family history. 1. [WEX] RE: Kehoe in Carlow
    2. Pam There is a Pat Kehoe mentioned in the book "Carlow in 98" the autobiography of William Farrell of Carlow edited by Roger J McHugh. It has references from one sentence to many pages to over 150 different people at the time of the rising in Carlow in 1798. I have indexed these surnames and there are references to Pat Kehoe of Leighlin Bridge, Carlow (pages 128-130) and Matt Byrne of Rathvilly (page 58), Mr Byrne the attorney (page 189) and Laurence Byrne (page 120). There are a number pages refering to Pat Kehoe of Leighlin Bridge and may be a close relative to the Kehoe's of Leighlin Bridge. Hope this helps. 1. [WEX] Kennedy and Ryan
    2. Ellen Kennedy
    3. Hello, I am new to the list. I am searching for information about the birthplace and family of Thomas Kennedy (born about 1822 in Co. Wexford, according to his petition for US naturalization) and his wife, Ellen Butler also born about 1822-24. They came to US in about 1849. They went to the area around Ithaca, NY (Hector, Trumansburg). They had three children born in the US beginning about 1852...I have always wondered if they had other children that died in Ireland during the famine. The second family is the Ryan family. John Ryan and Elizabeth White had at least two children, Anna and John both of whom also emigrated to Trumansburg, NY but in the 1880s. Anna Ryan was born about 1865. Family lore says she was from New Ross, Wexford. A couple of years ago I was in New Ross and looked at the parish records in the town but found nothing on this family. I would appreciate any leads or suggestions that anyone could share with me. Thank you! Ellen Kennedy
