    3. Hi- I have on loan the LDS 'Vital Records Index for the British Isles' for births/christenings-- ONLY for surnames beginning with the letters R-Z--I am willing to do lookups just until Monday-then I will be on vacation-The information is random-though there are births on the CD that do not show up on the LDS Search Ancestory site online-as I have found another of my grandfather's siblings not listed in the online database. The dates for Wexford appear to be 1865-1872--NO random surname searches please! If interested contact me directly as I still am unable to receive postings to the list! I know that in later years, they operated at least two businesses on South Street. No. 45 was the address of what we would call a plumbing and heating business today. I will certainly appreciate your response. Lester J. Hartrick Visit the Hartrick Clan Website at: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~hartrickclan

    2. James Carten
    3. Brand new on this group, but far from being brand new in searching out the Carten family. Over the generations, the story of how my ancestors got into Connecticut has been passed on etc....how true is it? Dunno........ Hugh Carten, b.1829 Wexford Co., came across to Canada, probably Montréal in 1845 as his beloved girlfriend, Catherine Bulger who had emigrated with her family, let Ireland for a new life. distraught beyond words, Hugh caught he next steamer and caught up with his beloved Catherine. In the meantime, his father...who I am searching for....was so mad that he sent son No.2 over to stop a possible marrige, reason with Hugh and bring him back. Son No.2, was Daniel or James, my direct ancestor, and much to the old man's surprise, Daniel/James found this side to his liking, and never returned. Hugh married and moved to Waterbury and then to Bridgeport, Conn. where he took u ppermanent residance, as did his brother. Being good Cartens, a fight broke out and my bunch moved to Stratford, the neighborig town...neither having anything to do with the other. Now, I a mtrying to find who this ill-tempered father was who remained in Wexford, and his wife. There are today descendants of another brother of Hugh's who live in Kilthomas, a lady married to a Doheny....Any help with this will be appreciated..... Shamelessly accepting genealogical handouts.....Jim Carten, Québec City, Canada.

    1. [WEX] Furlong
    2. Hines
    3. Hi Folks, I'm new to this list. I am hunting for the FURLONGs in my hubby's maternal line. The family story as I have it from older family members. I am waiting and hoping for Andrew Furlong's death certificate. I heard that the town of Covington in Kentucky kept death records for a few years surronding 1886. Meanwhile, I would love to connect up with any FURLONG researchers - hopefully someone has a Catherine born about 1838 that they lost somewhere. I have never tried leaping the big pond and have never done research in Ireland. Any connections or research tips on finding Andrew's, Anna's, and Catherine's parents would be greatly appreciate. ANDREW FURLONG was born Bet. 1805 - 1810 in Ireland, and died December 22, 1886 in Covington, (St. Elizabeth Hospital), Kenton Co., KY. He married ANNA FURLONG. She was born 1810 in Ireland, and died March 26, 1864 in May's Lick, (Hwy 68), KY. Notes for ANDREW FURLONG: Andrew, Anna and Martin may have immigrated from Wexford, Ireland around 1847. Their daughter Ellen came through New Orleans later (in about 1854.) The third child, Mary, was born in 1860 in Kentucky, U.S.A. Family tradition has it that Andrew and Anna came down the Ohio River to Maysville, KY about 1847. No port of departure or port of entry data has been found for this FURLONG family. Children of ANDREW FURLONG and ANNA FURLONG are: i. ELLEN FURLONG, b. 1841, County Wexford, Ireland; d. September 20, 1918, Hill Top, Mason Co., KY; m. PATRICK MURPHY, 1863; b. 1833, County Wexford, Ireland; d. 1880. Notes for ELLEN FURLONG: Journeyed from Wexford, Ireland to join her family in 1854 at the age of 13. Her 16 year old cousin, Catherine Furlong, came with her. Family history has it that they came through New Orleans. Catherine Furlong's parents and grandparents, siblings and any marriage record are completely unknown at this time. More About PATRICK MURPHY and ELLEN FURLONG: Marriage: 1863 ii. MARTIN FURLONG, b. June 08, 1843, Count Wexford, Ireland; d. March 27, 1920, Millersberg, Bourbon Co., KY. Notes for MARTIN FURLONG: He never married, but became a prosperous farmer. The Carlisle "Mercury", in its "Down Memory Lane" column, went back 100 years to note that on January 2, 1892, "Martin Furlong bought of W.M. Layson 185 acres near Headquarters for $6,500." This land straddles the county line between Bourbon and Nicholas counties, and is some of the best land in Kentucky. It lies along state route 648, a country road running north off US. 68 just 1/2 mile west of its intersection with Route 36. A drive down this road to the Bourbon County border will place you in the midst of Martin's former holdings. The road and area are known as Walnut Grove. Martin was 77 when he died in 1920, and is buried with his parents and Mary Furlong in their plot in St. Patrick's Cemetery. iii. MARY FURLONG, b. April 20, 1860, Mason Co., KY; d. December 30, 1941, Maysville, Mason Co., KY. Notes for MARY FURLONG: Mary remained single and earned her living as a cook. She would often say, later in life, that she had spent much of her earthly journey "working in rich people's kitchens." Nevertheless, Mary set herself the goal of buying a side altar for Saint Patrick's Church in Maysville. She saved her nickles and pennies and dimes for many years, always with her goal in mind. She died in 1941, and when her will was read it was found that she had left $2,000 lay in a Maysville bank accumulating interest for 33 years. Finally, in 1974, when the church was remodeled, Mary's lovely side alter of Italian marble was installed. her gift had more than doubled to some $5,000 by this time. The altar stands today on the right side of this beautiful church in silent but telling testimony to a woman of even more beautiful faith. Aunt Mary, as we all called her, spent her last years in her apartment, 106 E. 4th St. She is buried with Martin and her parents in one of the two Furlong plats in St. Patrick's Cemetery, Maysville, Mason Co., KY. Frank F. Mathias iv. JOHN BENEDICT FURLONG, b. March 1864, May's Lick, (Hwy 68), KY; d. January 25, 1937, Maysville, Mason Co., KY; m. ELIZABETH BROWNING, April 20, 1887, Maysville, Mason Co., KY; b. October 04, 1868; d. August 10, 1950, Maysville, Mason Co., KY. John B. Furlong was a Representative to the Kentucky State Legislature. Notes for JOHN BENEDICT FURLONG: John's mother died a few weeks short of his second birthday. Little John, a motherless child, was apparently looked after by his father and older brother and sister for some time. Once he was old enough to accept it, he was placed with a farm family. Pauline (Furlong) Clarkson said, in a 1981 interview, that "J.B.'s mother died when he was young, and he lived to his early manhood with Ben Clark's family along Route 68 at Fairview, Fleming County, KY. The Clarks were farmers. Fairview is 7 miles south of May's Lick. He fit in well with this family, was a hard worker, and carried very fond memories of the Clarks for the rest of his life. The two-story frame Clark home still stands 1/3 mile off route 68, but it is unoccupied and falling into ruin. Many Thanks for any connections, assistance, or Wexford research tips. Best Regards, Kathy Hines in Minnesota

    3. The surname of FURLONG rang a few bells with me, so I have dug it out! About 1987, I corresponded with a gentleman who was researching his JOYCE family. There were several mentions of POWER & ROSSITER which were possibly of interest to me but I was unable to find a connection. The JOYCE family were of Ballask, Kilmore, Co. Wexford. Tom Joyce m. Kate Power; John Joyce m. Ellen Power. (2 bros married sisters). Other surnames mentioned are FURLONG, MURPHY, STYNES, FORTUNE, BARRY, WHITE. There are just 2 sheets, roughly typed & a bit hard to follow. I don't have time to type it out, but if anyone wants more info or a scanned copy, please contact me. I can also check the AVRIs for WA, NSW, Tas & VIC BDMs, up to 1888+ depending on state, for any who strayed to OZ. Andrea Balcombe. RMB 1290 Cobden. 3266. Victoria. 2. For those in the Northeast, the Boston Public Library has all these in the Humanities reference section on the second floor of the old building. I believe the actual title is "In Search of Missing Friends" - the editor is a professor of history at Northeastern University in Boston. I've searched through them extensively and, although I haven't found anything of value to my CULLEN research, it's fascinating to read the detail that's provided on family relationships, geographic origins in Ireland, and the incredible mobility of the Irish in the 19th century. It really dispels the argument or perception by some that all the Irish settled in Boston or New York - they (we) went everywhere, and then moved on again if necessary to find work. By the way, the volumes are all indexed by surname, Irish county, Canadian and U.S. locations and more.

    3. Hello again I never considered this as a source before hearing about 2 of my friend who had success with this reference -The books are for sale-there are 7 volumes so far and more on the way they contain records derived from ads for finding missing Irish persons placed in the Boston Pilot during 1847 to the early 1900s, ads in which the missing persons are identified as either having left Ireland or arrived in North America during that time. Include date of ad, name of missing person, gender of missing person, county, parish, townland, barony, and poor-law district of origin, description of missing person, ship and port of departure of missing person, name of person placing ad, relationship of seeker to sought. I figured all this time that the immigrant would have had to been in Boston-but not so-they are from all over the US and Canada since the paper was widley circulated at the time. Each Volume costs about $45-pretty steep-but Vol 1 and 2 for ads placed in 1847 and 1848 are available as a freedownload online--It's pretty hit and miss cause your ancestor first of all had to missing since having left Ireland-and the subscriber had to have known of the service as well as had the $ to place the ad-but it may be worth a try for some! I downloaded using exel-worked out really well-Link below- Good Luck Hunting Nancy...Orlando Ryan/Clarke-wexford Ryan/O'Flaherty-galway Ryan/Maxwell/Williams/Kielly-Qld/au http://dpls.dacc.wisc.edu/Irish/fr_acc.htm _________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com.
