    3. Rose, In every forum like this there is always a Job's Comforter and today that is my role. From my own experience of transcribing in 'my' area of Glenbrien there are Connors, Connor, and O'Connor all definitely the same family living in the same place over a period of 20 years, depending on who wrote down the surname at the time and for what purpose. I respectfully suggest that you widen your search a little to check these variants out and you might strike lucky. Alan

    3. Rose, After checking out the Civil Registrations for the area for this time period the only one that looks a possibility is this: Mary Ann CONNORS b.12th. May 1887 Ballycanew, Gorey, Co. Wexford. Father: William CONNORS, Occupation Groom. Mother: Mary CRANWELL Registration Cert is available for this one. If his occupation, is given as a groom, it doesn't mean that he wasn't employed as an undertaker. It's quite possible that he was an actual groom (in charge of the horse and carriage) for the undertaker, as an employee. slan Cyril Newsome Loch Garman ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Wednesday, November 30, 2005 10:15 AM Subject: [WEX] Connor of Wexford > Hi, > > I am desparately seeking information on my grandmother Mary Ann Connor born > about 1888 in the Ballycanew/Ballycanew area. 1. Re: [WEX] Connor of Wexford
    2. Hi Alan, Yes, I must widen my search for other variants of the name Connor as you suggested. I'm not sure whether I did this or not when I went through the extracts of the civil registration at the LDS (it was many years ago now). But I do know from my English and Welsh genealogy research that the surname was often written down how the incumbent THOUGHT it sounded, so one can end up with very many variants. If I widen my search I will probably find I have a VERY LARGE family out there in Wexford! Kind regards, Rose

    2. Dear Aileen, Thank you so much for your response to my query. I did pay a researcher a few years ago to look up the 1901 census for me and he responded that he could not find anyone who matched the criteria. I will do a search at the LDS for myself. Thank you once again, Kind regards, Rose

    1. Re: [WEX] Connor of Wexford
    2. Dear Cyril, I am amazed!!!! and so excited. It has taken me years and years to find that infomation and that MaryAnn Connor is not listed on the Civil entries at the copies of civil registration at the LDS Family History Centres. That definitely looks like the right Mary Ann. I will now obtain a copy of her entry from Dublin. Thank you once again. Kind regards, Rose

    1. Connor of Wexford
    2. Hi, I am desparately seeking information on my grandmother Mary Ann Connor born about 1888 in the Ballycanew/Ballycanew area. Her father was a William Connor an Undertaker. Her mothers name is not known but her surname might have been O'Rioden. My grandmother died when my father was only nine years old so we know very little about her or her family. All my dad could recall was that she came from Ballycanew in Wexford. She married in Birmingham in 1920 Frederick Russell. I have not been able to find her birth registered in the civil authorities after searching for ALL Mary Ann/Mary Connors born within a few years of that date and I am now begining to wonder whether her birth was registered at all. So, I must look for a baptism entry. She was Roman Catholic so, can anyone tell me where I will find the registers for Ballycanew and surrounding parishes about 1880s? I have searched on the internet and can find very little on Ballycanew. Kind regards, Rose

    3. After reading that very interesting article about the grinding of culm, I still didn't know what culm was until I found this definition online: Ann in Iowa Culm \Culm\, n. [Perh. from W. cwlm knot or tie, applied to this species of coal, which is much found in balls or knots in some parts of Wales: cf. OE. culme smoke, soot.] (Min.) (a) Mineral coal that is not bituminous; anthracite, especially when found in small masses. (b) The waste of the Pennsylvania anthracite mines, consisting of fine coal, dust, etc., and used as fuel. -- Raymond.
