    3. Also, young men were recruited by companies, such as the Newman Brothers to go to Newfoundland to prosecute the cod fishing industry. They would sing on for a period of time and return to Ireland, but later many stayed once they got there. For some, it seems to have been a good way to leave Ireland if you did not have the money to do so, and one didn't want to be an indentured servant. There is a part of Newfoundland called the Irish Circle, where many Irish settled, such as my family. Regarding ships lists, I was told when I was in Ireland, that if a young man left Ireland as part of a ship's crew, such as a ship's carpenter, he would not be on the standard ship's passenger list. Others probably left because of the unrest in Ireland, such as after the 1798 Vinegar Hill rebellion. For some, it was a good idea to leave Ireland, particularly if they had participated. Also, it is my understanding from visiting Ireland and reading Irish history that the Irish Catholics, for many years, were treated rather badly by the English, and it could have been a motivation for leaving Ireland. Because of their bad treatment in Ireland, my understanding is that many who went to Newfoundland went to the area of Newfoundland that had a concentration of French. Some made it to the "Boston States" as "two-boaters." In other words, some went to Newfoundland first, and then to New York or Boston. My g-g-grandfather was a two-boater, going from Ireland to St. John's, Newfoundland, and then to Prince Edward Island where he was hired to build a church. After that, he remained there. 3. Good try, but Anastasia was one of the older of the Bolgers' Wexford born children, and she married and had children before she and her husband James Carty emigrated to Wisconsin in The newspaper article /obit when she died in 1890 says she married her husband in 1854 and they emigrated in 1858. Someone had all the facts mixed up, unfortunately, because their first child was born in 1848. By 1857 they had 6 children! But I can't find a record of their emigration! Thanks anyway! They probably did come via the Great Lakes...most direct way to Wisconsin! Don't know when Edward came either, altho there's a date on his naturalization application. I know Mary Doyle Bolger, Edward's wife came in 1848 with her youngest 7 children. It's in "Famine Immigrants", as I mentioned in a previous e-mail recently. 1. Reasons for leaving Ireland
    2. Albert Boisvert
    3. About 1820, Ontario (Upper Canada as it was known then) decided to build the Rideau Canal. Col John Bye was given the job of getting it done and was in need of thousands of labourers, the majority, I believe, coming from Ireland. The canal runs from Ottawa, Ont (called Byetown at that time) to the St Lawrence River. Many thousands were killed in accidents and from what was called, in those days, Swamp Fever. Today we know it as Malaria. The Canal was finished about 1832 and some of those Irish who managed to survive helped to build Ottawa. Many of the streets in Ottawa still bear Irish names to this day. I stand to be corrected but I believe that there are small cemeteries, to this day, all along the route of the canal I'm not sure if a detailed list of the dead was ever kept but probably a good place to start looking would be the Ontario Archives In all likelyhood those coming over would have disembarked at Quebec City(Lower Canada) and then taken a steamer up river. Hopefully this note will be of help to some. I am sure there are genealogists in the Ottawa area who may be able to enlarge on this brief note. 3. My ancestor, Daniel Sullivan apparently came from Wexford to Louisiana about 1818. Five sibs followed all the way up to the 1850s. It doesn't seem to follow any pattern at all. Any ideas about this?
