Bill and any other lister of interest, I saw your Wexford-l message about your ggg-grandfather John Stafford and married to a Murphy. Excuse me if I've written to you before and have lost the memory of that. Me own ggg-grandmother is MARY STAFFORD. She married JAMES EDWARDS in Piercestown in the southern part of Co. Wexford in 1829. I've been trying to find something about her family -- mother, father, siblings -- and what happened to her when the rest of the family shows up in Chicago in the 1850's. The last known child Mary and James had was a John in 1843. Am also looking for MURPHYS from Co. Wexford. My gg-grandfather is JAMES MURPHY who married Mary's and James' oldest daugther, CATHERINE, in 1859 in Chicago. Any connection you might have, no matter how slim, will be most gratefully welcomed. Richie -- Georgia, USA P.S. Ain't it fun trying to pin down relies with common names?
You are right Cyril. Should have said Sarah and John in Enniscorthy - I'm doing two trees at once. Three actually but the 3rd has led me to Belgium. Ho hum. Addled brain. Hilary, do you know if there were listings of those killed in the Battle of Vinegar Hill? 1798 Beth
On the same subject, are the records of the Troubles and Civil War period available? I imagine that there will have been a lot of detail recorded as to relations and associates of persons under official notice - Kevin Byrne
Kevin: A little earlier than the timeframe you mentioned, but look for "The 1916 Handbook." It was published right after the Easter Rising, consisting of material from newspaper articles etc. of the era. It has been re-published and should be available at Amazon. COM. In addition to recounting a lot of the story, details of executions etc., there are lists of detainees sent to various British camps, along with actual street addresses. I was actually able to find my father's uncles, no doubt about identity, because their addresses on John Street, Enniscorthy, were included. I also located what appears to be a listing for an uncle on my mother's side living at a specific address in Dublin. The lists are by date, so you may have to do some wading through all of it, but it may be worth it. If you can locate somebody who was detained in 1916, you might get leads either forward or backward. (I showed the lists to my 81 year-old father, who is from Enniscorthy. It was like a trip down memory lane, he knew many of the men when he was a boy. He was also surprised to learn that some of them had been detained - they never mentioned it. And, he saw a number of names that he recognized as continuing through the Civil War and beyond.......) Hilary: I have my grandfather's 1916 medal. He died in 1957 and I have been unable to obtain any information about his service. I rmember when I was a young reporter on The Free Press in Wexford we published a list of surviving Old IRA veterans of the War of Independence who were in receipt of military service medals. That's the only official listing I'm aware of. Names of many who were interned were published in the news columns of the local papers as they were released at different times in 1918. Names of casualties are given in Richard Roche's book "Here's Their Memory" published in 1966 - the 50th anniversary of the Easter Rising in 1916. An account of the Civil War, from the Republican side, was published by Sémus Mac Suain (Seamus Swan) in 1995. Again it names casualties. You might be interested to know, also, that the vol. 4 of the book "Wexford in the Rare Oul' Times" deals with the 1914-18 War, the War of Independence and Civil War. Let me know if I can be of any further help. Dear Cyril, what a fount of knowledge. I'm not sure how to proceed now. I have registered with the Wexford Heritage and Genealogy centre in the hope that someone local will look things up for me. Ellen,(or Helen) Redmond was my grandmother so I feel obliged to bring her out of obscurity! She was never one to pass on information except I do remember her saying she was born the 'year of the black snow' whatever that meant. Research has made more sense of that and it was 1886. Thanks, Margaret. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Cyril Newsome" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Monday, April 03, 2006 3:11 PM Subject: Re: [WEX] Redmond at Ballyruin > Dear Cara, > In actual fact I was going on the spelling of what was supplied and went > for > the nearest match! > > In reality it is not "Ballyruin" in the Parish of Templetown (I was going > on > the Ballyruin), the Townland you are in fact getting confused with, as > being > in the Parish of Templetown and also in the Parish of Tintern, is in fact > Ballinruane! > > Given the name, I am still convinced that my original guess was nearer to > the name offered by Margaret as Ballyruin. > So now we have a choice for her. > > The Records for this Ballinruan Templetown would come under St. James and > Templetown. > Births from Dec.1792 - Dec.1880 with a few gaps here and there. As far as I can tell Kristina there were only something like 7-8 Delaney's in Wexford for this period... Two of them being an Ellen and an Eleanor Delaney of Rathumney plus one other female located elsewhere. The remainder are all males of different locations. slan Cyril Newsome Loch Garman ----- Original Message ----- From: "Kristina Cameron" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Monday, April 03, 2006 11:10 AM Subject: [WEX] Delaney > Hello listers > > Could someone please tell me if the Delaney name was popular in Wexford, > circa 1860 > > Thankyou > Kristina > > Looking for Michael Delaney born circa 1860 > > Daughter Johanna Delaney born 1885 left Wexford 1899 circa resided in > Liverpool, Lancs 1901 > Her sister Ellen Delaney married Nicholas Cullen living in Kirkdale, > Liverpool, Lancs on the 1901 census age 32. > > Johanna Delaney married James Bolger born 1871, Gowran, Kilkenny in 1905 > Liverpool, Lancashire. > > Anyone searching Delaney family > > Kristina > > > ==== WEXFORD Mailing List ==== > To SUBSCRIBE or UNSUBSCRIBE send a message to: > > [email protected] (if you are in mail mode i.e. receiving the messages > individually or want them individually) > > or > > [email protected] (if you are in digest mode i.e. receiving a digest of multiple > messages or want this mode) > > >
Dear Cara, In actual fact I was going on the spelling of what was supplied and went for the nearest match! In reality it is not "Ballyruin" in the Parish of Templetown (I was going on the Ballyruin), the Townland you are in fact getting confused with, as being in the Parish of Templetown and also in the Parish of Tintern, is in fact Ballinruane! Given the name, I am still convinced that my original guess was nearer to the name offered by Margaret as Ballyruin. So now we have a choice for her. The Records for this Ballinruan Templetown would come under St. James and Templetown. Births from Dec.1792 - Dec.1880 with a few gaps here and there. Marriages from 1792-1880 (with more gaps) and Burials from Jan. 1816-1879. These are available on film at Wexford Library and also at the NLI on film no.4245. Ballinruane Tintern records, would come under Ballycullane/Tintern and the records from there (on film) are: Births from 1827-1880 (and in a very poor state). Marriages 1827-1880 Burials from 1828-1832 On film no.4259 in Wexford and the NLI. The only person buried in Tintern Abbey Cemetery with an actual location to Ballinruane is one John Keane who didn't peg out until Jan. 1948 aged 65. Templetown I have no records of there being a Redmond buried in there! I have never come across one yet. This Cemetery is located on one of my usual routes to the Hook Lighthouse so stopping there is quite the norm for me, it's always nice to visit the natives now and again. There are also no Redmond's buried in St. Dubhan's Cemetery at the Hook. There are however some 5-6 Redmond's buried in Ballycullane Old Cemetery but none prior to 1870. History? I can still do it! What more can I say? Cara you have been bitten!!! Hi Cyril does a lot of research for Wexford list. Take it easy on him. Keep up the good work Cyril Bill [Shropshire] -----Original Message----- From: Cara_Links [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: 03 April 2006 09:50 To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [WEX] Redmond at Ballyruin Margaret asked was there a Ballyruin in Wexford? Cyril said are you sure its not Ballyrooaun? Cara says technically Margaret is correct slightly off in her spelling, after all Margaret only wrote what she heard . well done Margaret it was close and close was good enough in this case. Cyril who should know better is way off in his spelling, and should be paying more attention to his history and not messing with four emails at once. Ballyruan is a Townland the irish name being Baile and Ruain ( townland of the Buckwheat -thrift) it is in the civil parish of Templetown Barony of Shelburne Union of New Ross and the DED is Templeton Ballyruane being in the same civil parish same barony same Union but in the DED of Tintern DED= District Electoral Division. So Cyril bite me Cara ==== WEXFORD Mailing List ==== DO NOT post virus warnings, test messages, chain letters, political announcements, current events, items for sale, personal messages, etc.
Hi All: Can anyone tell me where I might find local police records from around New Ross in the 1850 time frame. Thank you, Jerry Roach Idaho USA

Hello Marilyn, I think Cyril is probably right and I had the wrong spelling. All I know is that Ellen Redmond b(1886)came from Ballyrooaun (Cyril's spelling) Enniscorthy and she had at least one sister Maureen always known as Minny, plus at least two brothers, don't know their names but they never left their small farm, never married - she moved to Plymouth, England when she was about 14 years old. Rumour gives her father's name as John, mother Sarah Murphy but I don't know if that is accurate. Sorry I can't tell you more, regards Margaret. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Marilyn Shanahan" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Sunday, April 02, 2006 9:50 PM Subject: Re: [WEX] Redmond > Hello again Cyril... > You know, it was Margaret, the last threaded message on this line, that > asked about Ballinruin in Wexford. oops, didn't think about the Wexford thing when I wrote that. Well I know very little Cyril, only that on the census taken in England, after he moved there, it gave Michael's birth date and that he was born in Bandon as were his children. I apologise to all the Wexford folk for asking a silly question. Margaret you do come up with them, posting a Cork query in Wexford? Are you sure it was Bandon and not Shandon? I have Collins families living in Shandon, Collins Family living on the "Bandon Road" in Cork, but none actually living in Bandon for that time period. Could it be any of these? Hello again Cyril... You know, it was Margaret, the last threaded message on this line, that asked about Ballinruin in Wexford. I do not know what town my Redmonds came from in Wexford, and was inquiring of her, what information she might have as to whether we had a connection of Redmonds. Maybe she could clarify which townland she was referring to. Thanks for your interest.
