Nice one George, well put. I think the Latin was easier for me though as I couldn't understand that any easier, but it was less words. I think we should all go out and re-think our education. The Priests did their best with me, but then I could only say the mass in Latin (still can). Anything like some of the Latin I have seen in registers frightens the life out of me sometimes, I often wonder if the priests actually spoke as they wrote "would they themselves understand each other?". But, well done George for clarifying the matter and thanks for posting it Suzanne. Again thank you to those who replied both on List and off. On the 29th of May George Findlen wrote that :- " First cousins are but two,not three, generations from a common ancestor. Thus first cousins require a dispensation for the second to second degree of consanguinity. The individuals in this entry are second cousins since they required having a dispenstion for the third to the third degree of consanguinity. The phrase " in tertio et tertio tells us that both persons were three generations from a common ancestor." Thanks to Cyril and Rich for their information on the Latin meaning. Definitely means a trip back to the Library in Wexford now to find how the FREEMANS and CORISH families were already linked. Bad Typo day Cyril , had been up 21 hrs after returning from a very wet holiday, guess where,it is the wettest May in Ireland for many a year! I was told by a local lady that Bastardstown is now referred to by some people now as Seaview :)) Suzanne
You are right there Suzanne, It's called consanguination- " marrying blood relatives". The Priest was stating that the dispensation was needed for the marrying of blood relatives and had obviously been received. The order of the relationship could have been anything from 1st. cousin to any one of the other cousin relationships although generally first to first direct would have been frowned upon and probably not allowed. The latter part of the entry I don't understand. (Alterboys wouldn't normally be that involved)...Lol Now this bit: "If any lister lives in the Kilmore area and knows of a Kathleen Freeman connected with the name Barry in the Bastarstown area in recent times could you please contact me off list". For the benefit of those not in Ireland the location is of course called BASTARDSTOWN, I don't think it is making a statement here with the name and this is, a genuine location! It consists of 191 acres and is located in the Parish of Kilmore in the Barony of Bargy. Suzanne is either having a Typo day or being polite? (Bargy is pronounced BAR-GEE as in melted butter, as opposed to Gee-up for horses). slan Cyril Newsome Loch Garman ----- Original Message ----- From: "Suzanne Dodd" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Sunday, May 28, 2006 1:22 AM Subject: [WEX] Need LATIN help please > Re-Listing,Hello again, > I found last Wednesday a Marriage entry for a Patrick FREEMAN and a Bridget CORISH in 1877 for Kilmore. Now under the heading of Impeditmentum I think it reads as follows Dispensatium impedimento consanguinatio in tertio et tertio fr-d or t-- > > Poor schoolgirl Latin gives me gives me a dispensation from the impediment of consanguinity,I think but what does the last bit mean.Has anyone a clue please? Dear Bonnie and Keith: The Mary Ann Kealy in 1881 Renfrew census (probably Wilberforce Twp) I believe is the Mary Ann Kealey living with the Lett family - and said to be a "cousin" I do believe cousin is also used loosely to mean "close friend" A sister of Mary Kealey, Catherine, married Henry Boyle. I would be interested if anyone has the relationship of these two girls to the Lett family which settled in Wilberforce Twp, County Renfrew, Ontario in 1847 and 1849. I am new to the list. I just found a reference to Wexford on a Marriage Reg in Ontario Canada. It is for John Roe, son of John Roe and Mary Ann Kealy. Family lore was that the Roe family left Enniskerry, Cty Wicklow in the 1860's. Family lore may be fictional since John gave the information himself and it is clearly Wexford, Ireland. There is no one alive who knows. John Roe and Mary Ann Kealy were born about 1814. There were 6 known children who went with them to Canada. They settled in Alice Twp near Pembroke, Renfrew County, Ontario. John, the father, appears on the 1861 Alice Twp census and no family is listed so he may have left first with the family following. The entire family is on the 1871 census for Alice Twp. John acquired land before the 1861 census and remained a farmer his entire life in Ontario. Robert born 1842 Nicholas born 1845 Julia born abt 1851 John born abt 1858 Elizabeth Frances born abt 1858 Edward T born about 1860. The year of birth for the children vary and are not documented but are taken from censuses and other documents. This family has not been found in Enniskerry records. It is on the marriage reg for John that Wexford is listed as his place of birth. Based upon research, another Mary Ann Kealy, born in Wexford in 1831 ended up in 1881 Renfrew County also. There may or may not be a connection. Our Mary Ann Kealy had two sisters who left Ireland and went to Massachusetts, Julia (b. abt 1824) and Bridget. We are spelling Kealy this way because it is given by Julia's daughter on Julia's death registration. Any help a guidance is appreciated. Bonnie in California
