Just adding to Cyrils comments is the fact that most of these shipping lists would be at port of Entry not embarkation. Dunbrody's list is brilliant and has people from all walks of nations on it I even noted some Italians when I was there last.... the Old church of Screen was situated in the townland of Ballyhubbock. Scrin Mhaolruain was a shrine dedicated to St Maolruain of Tallaght Stolen in 1981 was the remarkable artifact associated with Screen which was the 14th century carved oak statue of a saint ( never recovered) The present church at Screen is dedicated to St Cyprian, whose feast day is 16th September Built in the time of Rev Sylvester Cloney parish priest from 1889-1908 and the church was designed by J Kelly Freeman of 67 Eccles Street Dublin. Externally the walls are plastered and painted, but there are granite quoins, buttresses and dressings, with a distinctive porch and belfry surmounts the entrance gable. Windows are romanesque with a three-light window in the sanctuary depicting the Calvary scene. There is a commemorative marble wall tablet to Rev Mathias Brennan C.C. who died 21/5/1871 aged 35 years, a brass tablet in memory of Rev Patrick Parker C.C. died 5th Feb 1882 aged 53 years. Others buried in the outside church yard are Father John Cullen ( 1953) Father Boggan and Father Frank Barron ( 1995) Cheers Cara

Advice please from those more knowledgeable. Catherine FREEMAN aged 25 married a John CARTY in Kilmore 1868 her father is given as William FREEMAN occupation Small Farmer address for Freemans is Ballyask. Also have a Patrick FREEMAN of full age marrying a Bridget CORISH in 1877 father again given as William FREEMAN address Ballyask this time occupation given as Cottier. Is this likely to be the same family of FREEMAN'S,given that itdoesn't appear to be a common name around the area? I looked up Cottier,it gave the impression that it was 'tied farming',whereas Small Farmer gives the idea that land was owned? On the subject of area,is it likely do you think that my FREEMAN'S down in 'Kilmore' wended their way there from the Enniscorthy area where there seems to have been a number around 1830.Information taken from the Tithe Defaulters 1831 kindly sent to me by a Lister. Thanks for reading this. Suzanne Dodd
Hello Cyril, many thanks for your reply all information greatly apprciated, I realise it's going to be a whole new ball game from now on. Ann.M.Rutter
Ann, Following on from what you got from Mike. There are 6 John JACKMANS recorded in the Griffiths' Valuations for the years 1848-64 living in Wexford. There are NO Martins recorded. However there are 3 John JACKMANS recorded in Kilkenny for this period and 2 by the name of Martin. There are no Johns or Martins in Carlow, Dublin or Laois. I personally, cannot find any 2 JACKMANS in the Tipperary area. These names are only those of the heads of household which doesn't mean they didn't exist otherwise. slan Cyril Newsome Loch Garman... ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Thursday, June 22, 2006 11:21 PM Subject: Re: [WEX] NEW SUBSCRIBER RESEARCHING JACKMAN > Hello Mike, > many thanks for your reply and the information therein, > how do I access this information, is it available online?. > its difficult knowing just where to start but hope to be able to make > some contribution in the not too distant future. > regards > Ann.M.Rutter > > > ==== WEXFORD Mailing List ==== > DO NOT post virus warnings, test messages, chain letters, political announcements, current events, items for sale, personal messages, etc. > > >

The table below shows the number of jackman households in each county in the Primary Valuation property survey of 1848-64. Click on a county name for a breakdown of the number of households by parish (paying). Carlow 1 Dublin 3 Kilkenny 24 Laois 14 Tipperary 2 Wexford 17 Does this help any? It narrows down where people came from. I live in Manchester, England and have joined the WEXFORD rootsweb mailing list as I have been informed this is the most likely area to find the JACKMAN name, I'm hoping to find some information on my Irish ancestry of which I know nothing. My grt grandfather Martin JACKMAN was born 1858,1861 or 1862 according to census information, 1881 at St Helens, Lancashire, England he's a 23 year old lodger born in Bristol, no registrations traced anywhere in England in fact no Martin's show for many years, the 1891 census gives age 30 years born Ireland, 1901 his age is given as 39 years and again no county is given it also shows his youngest daughter Mary Jackman age 1year was also born in Ireland, which makes me think they must have been visiting relatives at the time, and lastly Martins marriage certificate gives his fathers name as John JACKMAN a carpenter. Sorry to be so long winded, hoping you can shed some further light or can make some connection. Thank you for your time and very best wishes Ann.M.Rutter
Hugh please submit info. below if it does not reach the list again. 1. On the www.wexford.ie web site, under the planning section there are the best town maps of the major wexford towns. 2. I am trying to find location of a street in New Ross. It is not listed on that map. The background of this item is that some local people whose ancestors came from there paid a visit about a dozen years ago. On tape while sitting by 3 bullet gate he was describing where there original house was. They apparantly shared a common ancestero. 3. He said that the street the original house is still on is Irish for cobbler. It was so named because there were about a dozen cobblers working there (I was told there was a street called tailor street for the same reason. I also didn't see that one but I don't need to know where it is). I did a search on the web for brog (which is Irish for cobbler) and there was one hit in an obituary for Brog Lane. The family lived on Nunnery Lane/Cross street which is across the the fella that was reading to the tape. 4. Althought the map above doesn't have many names for locations across the river I would think that cobblers would most likely operate just outside the the town walls in Irishtown or adjoining areas. It is possible that for some reason the street is renamed. I don't know of any other resources to draw on for the moment. 5. Another thing I find odd is that there are two Nunnery Lanes going the same directions. They are very near each other but are not connected. It's unique city planning. Larry O'Brien
Hello everyone I have just joined this list on the offchance that someone may have some information or be able to offer me some advice about my FURLONG ancestors. My great grandmother was Catherine Agnes FURLONG, known as Kate, daughter of William FURLONG, distiller. I have no idea whereabouts in Wexford she was born or lived, but from English census information her birthdate would be c1863. In January 1880 Kate married my great grandfather, William Bernard Mulligan in Stoke Damerel, Devon. William was at that time in the Royal Navy. At the time of the 1881 census Kate was living in Plymouth with Mary Ann THOUMAINE, born c1854 in Wexford. I have since discovered that Mary Ann was Kate's elder sister who first married someone called HAMMOND and after being widowed remarried in July 1878 at the age of 24 also in Stoke Damerel. Her second husband was Alfred Augustus THOUMAINE, a baker in the Royal Navy. Although I have checked the English GRO indexes I have been unable to locate Mary Ann's first marriage so at this point I am assuming she married in Ireland, probably in Wexford. In October 1881 Kate gave birth to her first child, a daughter and my grandmother, Mary Ann MULLIGAN in Plymouth. The next two children, Alice MULLIGAN born c1884/5 and William MULLIGAN born 21 February 1886 were both born in Wexford. My great grandfather was still in the Royal Navy not being discharged to the Coastguard Service until December 1887. My late mother often told me that my grandmother Mary Ann MULLIGAN spent quite some time as a child being cared for by the nuns at the Convent of Loretto in Wexford as she had to lie flat on her back due to a spinal problem. Again, I don't have a timescale other than she was in England at the time of the 1891 census when she was 9 years old. I also know that there was a FORAN connection in the family - I am not sure whether William FURLONG, distiller, was married to a FORAN - oh how I wish I had paid more attention to what my mother said when I was young! She also told me that one of her FORAN relatives became an actor in America. If anyone can link into this family or point me in the right direction I would be most grateful. I realise that Wexford is full of FURLONGS but any help would be most appreciated as I live in England. With best wishes Catherine Carney
