Hi Shelagh, there are 4-5 cemeteries in the Ferns Parish: Ferns itself St. Aidans Old Church Cemetery Clologue Ballyduff The Old 1798 Cemetery 3 miles out of Ferns on the Carnew road. It's more than possible that the Michael Redmond you mention was no relative at all, but the attending Doctor in both cases, as we have the doctor come to the houses be it at the point of death or shortly afterwards in the home, for certification purposes. Hospital deaths are certified of course by the attending Doctor in the hospital. Even today, if you die at home, either the Doctor or even the Clinic nurse has the authority (on the Doctors behalf) to Certify death. slan Cyril Newsome Loch Garman... ----- Original Message ----- From: "SHELAGH ONEILL" <shelaughs@btopenworld.com> To: <WEXFORD@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, January 30, 2009 11:19 AM Subject: [WEXFORD] Clinch > Can anyone tell me please how I can find where Catherine Clinch age 86 of > Baylands Ferns who died December 23 1920 and her husband Thomas age 83 who > died December 27 1920 - (within 4days of each other) are likely to be > buried? Can anyone tell me please how I can find where Catherine Clinch age 86 of Baylands Ferns who died December 23 1920 and her husband Thomas age 83 who died December 27 1920 - (within 4days of each other) are likely to be buried? Both their deaths were registered by a Michael Redmond who was also present at their deaths at Baylands. Does anyone know of him or his descendants please. They were both members of St. Aidans Roman Catholic church where they had been married and all their 8 children were baptised. Any help gratefully accepted. Shelagh O'Neill.
Great discussion, I made the trip of my lifetime to Ireland in October and this has always been one of the burning questions, what was the port of emigration? Depending on who I talked to among the elders in the family at the time, and when asked where did the family come from, there was mention of two Counties, Wexford and Cork. Records have since determined that the family lived in Wexford leaving the conclusion that Cork must have been the port of emigration?? I travelled the entire route from Enniscorthy, County Wexford to New Ross and then to Queenstown. Knowing that they probably travelled on foot or at the very least by horse and carriage, my question was why would they bypass New Ross. Of course, I have not been able to establish if my ancestor travelled alone but if he did, I concluded maybe, just maybe that he worked at different jobs along the route until he reached Cork. Being a Cooper, there would have been plenty of opportunities to find work in his trade. John, thanks for all this info about ships leaving Ireland. My husband's ggg grandfather, Bartholomew Connors from Kiltilly, Co.Wexford, arrived in Cape Breton in 1816 and took out a land grant at Low Point, Cape Breton November 23, 1918. I have always wondered what port he would have sailed out of and where he would have landed. It is very possible that he landed in Cape Breton like you have stated, rather than Pictou. It would be wonderful to have passenger lists, but it was too early in the emigration period. I notice that you are searching Doyle's. My husband has a g grandmother, Mary Ann Doyle, born 1841 who married a William Heffernan, daughter of Garret Doyle and Ellen Brewer; and gg grandparents Michael Doyle and Mary Fitzgerald. Michael was suppose to have been born in Co.Wexford, place unknown. Thanks again John. The Ship's List - Ships to and from Nova Scotia 1815-1838 is a good source for many of the ship's that sailed Ireland to Nova Scotia. The NS Archives in Halifax have archived custom returns for many of the passengers but no master list of who entered the country. The list names ships leaving from Cork, Waterford and Wexford. The volume of traffic was fairly low pre 1828 but started to pick up around this time. What you don't see pre 1825 is the ships that landed at Arichat, Richmond County, Cape Breton. Cape Breton was annexed to Nova Scotia in 1820. Searching through this site gives a plethora of information even a few passenger lists of landings in Pictou. Many of our ancestors arrived in Canada/Cape Breton before record keeping was mandatory. A point of note: There was a large influx of Irish circa 1819 - 1824 settling in the Richmond County and Inverness County regions and in all of Cape Breton 1828-1830. It seems that a significant number of the Irish to Cape Breton were from Wexford: Doyle's, Kavanaugh's, Kehoe's, Keating's, Fortune's etc. with others from Waterford, Cork and Tipperary. I think my great grandfather, Michael Nolan, was from Ballycrystal, Kiltealy, Co.Wexford. I have documentation that he left there on 8/19/1853, went to London and sailed from Liverpool three days later, 8/22/1853. on the ship Arabia. He arrived in New York on Oct. 1 of that year. I don't think there would've been time for him to get down to Cork, but am not sure how far the port is. An excellent source of information on ports of departure in Ireland in the 18th century is R. J. Dickson's book, Ulster Emigration to Colonial America 1718-1775. It contains a map of the ports and the routes from various towns and cities, giving you an idea of the likely port of departure. For what it is worth, my Fortune ancestors departed Newry in 1767 and arrived in Charleston, SC later that year. There is no proof they lived in Newry and the majority of Fortunes at that time lived in Wexford. Is there a source for the early 19 hundreds as well? I am looking for my gggrandfather and gggrandmother, they immigrated from Ireland to Nova Scotia around the early 1820's. hey settled in Port Hood Nova Scotia. Their names are Richard Harding and Bridget nee Murphy. I think they were from County Wexford. To this letter I wrote an answer but never read any one Since. I am quite happy that you are all together in one place and likely to do well, at the time I wrote there was a letter written in answer to Patrick Cahills letter and another letter written by Mark Furlong. I am write content now in my old days supposing that my grey hairs may soon go to the grave to hear that you both are well Situated and in circumstances that will enable you to make out a lively hood for yourselves during life. To the searcher for these folks In the Ballyculane parish records for baptisms. Sep. 2 1829 Mary to Patrick Stafford and Mary Quinn witnesses Richard Colfer and Maria Carty Poking around in the archives looking for Quinn and Lyng searchers I saw the above and found someone searching for them. Joan
Hello, Joan!? Thank you for this information, I am always on the look-out for any Quinns from any part of Wexford. Specifically, I am looking for information about any and all Quinns who lived in Rathangan/Kilcowan Parish.? Please keep me in mind if you come across them.? My g-g-grandfather Peter Quinn (b. abt 1808) and g-g-grandmother Catherine Pierce (b. about 1816?) lived in Longridge townland in the 1840s and baptized five children (Thomas 1843, Bridget 1844, Patrick, Stephen 1847, Peter)1851) in Rathangan R.C. church before emigrating to Pennsylvania in 1852.?? Don't know where parents Peter and Catherine were born.? Have checked the registers for Kilcowan/Rathangan and Kilmore parishes, and several other parishes in the vicinity, haven't found their marriage.? Have found a few other Quinns mentioned in those parish registers who are probably siblings of Peter, but no real proof of family relationship.?? Have already checked Griffiths, Tithe Applotment, etc etc.? Very, very few Quinns lived in that part of Wexford at that time. I believe Swan was the primary landlord in that vicinity, according to Griffiths.? Would love to find estate records for that landlord.? Last time I looked there were no estate records at the National Library or Archive. Hello, I am looking for information on Furlong Family who came over to the United States in 1819. This is all the information I have on them from the ship manifest Arrival Date: Feb 22, 1819 Port of Arrival: Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA. Port of Departure: Cork, Ireland Ship Name: Amiable Names Laurence Furlong Mary Furlong (wife) Bridgit John Nick I believe that John (if I have the correct family) is my GGGgrandfather and was born abt 1814 in Ireland. Bridgit would most likely have been born before 1814, and Nick after 1814. And I would assume that Laurence and Mary would have been born during the 1790's in Ireland as well? Hoping to find them in Wexford since many Furlongs came from there. Also, is it strange that if they came from Wexford that they would have left Ireland from Cork? Thank you for your help, Jill
