Hi, Peggy, I saw your message to Maureen on Wexford Digest vol. 4, Issue 29. I have been looking for ages for Luke Kehoe and Laurence Kavanagh, and this is the first time I have ever seen them mentioned in one place! I am looking for a Luke James Kehoe, b 1792 in Ireland. He was married in the Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, area. His son, Luke Kehoe, married into my mother's family. My mother's grandfather was Lawrence Cavanagh, b. between 1837-1842 somewhere in Ireland. His father was John Cavanagh and his mother was Mary Ryne (not Ryan). They both died on the voyage to Canada around 1849. The witness Luke Kehoe in 1826 could be the Luke James Kehoe I am looking for. The witness Laurence Kavanagh could be grandfather or uncle to my Lawrence Cavanagh (who never learned to read and write so any spelling is possible). I have never heard of Kilaveny/Annacora. Could you please tell me what records survive for that area? Are Roman Catholic baptisms available in that area? I ! will be very grateful for any information. Thank you very much. Shirley Smith Hi Maureen, Don't know if these are your couple, but here goes... Brian (Bryan) Kavanagh married Bridget Murphy 10 August 1826 in the R.C. Church in Kilaveny/Annacorra. witnesses to the Marriage were Luke Kehoe, Patrick Murphy and Laurence Kavanagh. This record was transcribed from microfilm # 4257 at the National Library in Dublin. I also have a Brian Cavanagh married to Mary Carty in 1830 Married in Ballyoughter R.C. Church. I have a Brian Kavanagh and Mary Dempsey of Kilanerin who Baptized Elizabeth, Anne, blank, John, Mary, Alice, Catherine between 1807 and 1821. These couples might be too early for your use, but you can get a clue as to where they might have come from in Wexford. Who knows, maybe they are you next generation back, if they followed a naming pattern. I'm going back and forth between transcriptions for Kilaveny/Annacorra from microfilm and Kilanerin digital records, so I may have more of these Cavanagh/Kavanaghs later in the year (I'm only up to F in Kilanerin and 1850 on Kilaveny/Annacorra). Good luck, Peggy

Hello Maureen - have you tried posting a query on the Kavanagh website? There are some knowledgeable people in the 'Clan' who may be able to assist. http://www.kavanaghfamily.com/index.htm Also other Kavanaghs who may connect. My great grandmother Bridget Kavanagh / Cavanagh was born in County Wexford in 1850 and died in Auckland NZ in 1903. According to her death certificate she had travelled to NZ in 1866. Her sister Elizabeth (Lizzie) was born in County Wexford in 1863 and died in Auckland NZ in 1937. Her death certificate states she had come to NZ in 1881. Both ladies named their parents as Bryan and Bridget Kavanagh. There were allegedly 4 brothers - Martin / James / Patrick / Leo John - all of whom appeared as sponsors on the baptismal certificates of the 25 children belonging to Bridget & Elizabeth. I have not had much luck finding any information about Bridget & Elizabeth and would appreciate any advice on where to start my Wexford research. Regards Maureen Little Auckland NZ
One of my grgrgrtaunts married a Hayes but their children were baptised as Hoy. I put this down to their illiteracy and accents, the transcribers had some difficulty translating, I have even seen Hoey & Hey in Australian records. One thing that has puzzled me a little is the use or non use of O'. my grtgrandfather came from Gorey & when in the British army & police force was Brien or Bryan. After they came to Australia the family called themselves O'Brien right down to my Mother. My John Doyle was born 1836 not 1846 in Wexford,Craan, Ireland and other Doyles were living in Newtownbarry, John Doyle Married Bridget Kavanaugh 1860 her father was John Kavanaugh and Mary Conors, John and Bridget Doyle left Ireland 1861 and came to New York USA. Our Murphys were from Ireland married the Doyles in New York, I do not know where my Murphys came from in Ireland. Any help would be great. Thanks Sandy
Personally, I think blaming immigration officers for changing surnames or the spelling of surnames is for the most part a myth. There was no motivation for these people to bother changing the names of the thousands of people who passed through their gates. And, passenger lists were prepared at the point of departure, not entry. In the U.S., for example, one can find that it was the immigrants themselves who chose to change their names - most often at the time of naturalization (several years after arriving). Of course, there was pressure from the dominant English-speaking culture to do so. This was certainly so in my region, where most immigrants began by working in the mines and the paternalistic mine captains from New England wanted everyone to become "good" Yankee-like citizens. No doubts the Irish, as English speakers, had some advantage over the Eastern and Southern Europeans, whose languages weren't understood and treated with suspect. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Cyril Newsome" <cnews@eircom.net> To: <wexford@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, February 02, 2009 12:43 PM Subject: Re: [WEXFORD] More Doyles. Suzanne, Do not dismiss the name of KAVANAGH which is the more common variant of the name over here. I find that most times the name is corrupted to the spellings you have outside of Ireland, even as far as to pronounce it as KAV-ANNA in the UK. I think they live under the illusion that it sounds better and sort of loses the link to their Irish ancestry? This was more common amongst the Irish communities in the days when you saw the signs saying "Irish not welcome" or "need not apply", so a change of spelling could open doors for them. Sadly phonetics has lost a lot of the origins over the years. I put it down to immigration officers in various lands not being familiar with the English/Irish language or brogues who could not be bothered but wrote it as it sounded. Of course in a lot of cases the Irish themselves could not read or write to question or correct the matter. Another one I often come across, lost in translation, is the name of HAYES which has been corrupted to HAISE/HAYS/HAZE etc.. slan Cyril Newsome Loch Garman

I see a lot of references to Doyles, Murphys and Redmonds - as well as Kavanaughs lately. Does anyone related to those names as well as Lacey and McCreary have someone coming to Philadelphia, PA and Queens, NY? My grandmother, Nellie McCreary, came to Philadelphia with her cousins John Doyle and Mary & Annie Murphy in the late 1800s. She also was related to the Redmonds and Laceys of Queens. She lived with her aunt Margaret Cavenaugh (Kavenaugh) and her cousin Walter Lacey in Philadelphia- all from Wexford. Many of her siblings and cousins came to both Philadelphia and Queens and went back to Wexford. Some stayed, some just visited. Nellie eventually married in Philadelphia, moved to Queens and then moved to White Plains in Westchester County. It seems she was related to many Doyles, Murphys and Redmonds. Thanks for an interesting message board. Suzanne B.

I see a lot of the same names on this list but one of my lines start for me about 1831 with marriage of:\ James Carbery and Mary Mernagh. Mernagh is a Wexford name. I suspect my Carbery line came over from Waterford. Any others searching these names? Not much found in the archives. Joan
