    1. [WESTALL] William Westall b ca. 1794 Oxfordshire

    3. Jenny, This is not the easiest task I have seen! I have found William in 1841, 1851, 1861 ,1871 and I believe he d Bet. Jul - Sep 1874 Marylebone, Middlesex, Eng. His first wife Margaret d Bet. Oct - Dec 1858 Marylebone, Middlesex, Eng. William then m Mary Ann Wells b Wantage, Berkshire, Eng Bet. Jan - Mar 1864 Marylebone, Middlesex, Eng If that is correct that was the easy part! Do you know if William had any siblings? Maybe a Julia b 1798 Oxfordshire m Henry Charles Fletcher Bet. Jan - Mar 1852 Kensington? Or maybe a Mary Westall b 1804 Oxfordshire m Charles Luckett b 1802 Witney, Oxfordshire, Eng. A Ruth Westall b 1840 comes to light here somewhere maybe? I suspect Ruth may have been the issue of a brother of William's or not? If it appears I am reaching for straws you are right! The key to all this is that in the 1851 Census Mary Westall b 1776 Oxfordshire was living with her Daughter Mary Luckett and her husband Charles. By 1861 Charles Luckett was dead as Mary Luckett was living with her niece Ruth, husband Thomas Holland and their children. The 1871 and 1881 still shows Mary Luckett living with Ruth etc. Possibly William's mother Mary b 1776 may have d Jan - Mar 1855 Wantage. This is more guess as William is just old enough to not really show siblings etc directly. I am sure you have known that for a long time. Can you give me any hints above what you put in your first email? 3. Hi Bob, I agree - it seems that these certificates might help to resolve the issue. I have 250+ of these pesky things and even the DCerts can be quite enlightening. For example I have one gggg grandfather who, 'was killed by a horse in the performance of his duties..' He was 94 at the time! By the way, there's a picture of William Westall ARA in this article. Anyone spot a family resemblance? http://www.abc.net.au/navigators/naturalists/westall.htm As for my own ancestors, I believe they originated in the Aldbourne area of Wiltshire, with strong links to Ramsbury (and to the group that migrated to south Wales and to the Cadishead area of Lancashire). There seems to be at least one other independent Westall group in Wiltshire at the end of the 17th century which was centred on Trowbridge, and the Bishopstone area near Shrivenham. I have also identified some early Westall's (c.1550's) in the area around Keevil and East Isley and we can hypothesise (quite likely?) that these are all linked through a common ancestry. Does anyone have a link between these different groups? Thanks. 3. Thank you Bob for all your research. I have found William in all the Census records you mentioned and know that he died Sept 1874 aged 80 Certificate 1a 382 Marylebone. He Married Margaret Wood 15.11.1819 at St Mary Newington Surrey. I don not have this certificate, which may give his parents names. I agree with your marriage and death details for Margaret Wood and Mary Ann Wells. I don't know about siblings. I really have nothing more definite than this going back. Of course I have information going forward - William's daughter Alice (b. 1832) being my g.g. grandmother. Alice Westall married George Thomas Nicholls in 1852 in Kensington. They emigrated to Australia in 1855 on the "Euphrates". Their daughter Alice Elizabeth Nicholls b.1859 Sydney, married her cousin James Thomas Chester. Going Back is more difficult, as you say. I have found a William Westall bapt. 23.11.1757 in Crowmarsh Gifford. He had brother John b.1748-51 and Richard 1761 and there was a Mary Westall but she could have been either a sister or the wife of one of the brothers. This Mary appears to have had at least 3 children - Elizabeth 1774, John 1776 and William 1779. I believe this William married Francis Lankshear 13.5.1779 in Great Coxwell Berks. They had Jane 1799, Ann 1801, William 1802 who married Mary Atkins b. 1802, Mary 1804, Margaret 1806, James 1808 and John 1814. I got this information from the Reynolds family tree 9349924-2 by Natalie Reynolds. I have no way at the moment of connecting this to my William Westall. The William Westall from Great Coxwell who married mary Atkins was a cordwainer in 1841 census but by 1851 and 61 was a shoemaker as was my William Westall. The only reason I've given allthis information is that Crowmesh Gifford appears. This seems to be the only Oxfordshire Westalls I can find. The tonycairns tree 9551581-2 has some of this information pertaining to Fanny Lankshear (I think that was through genes reunited) Many thanks for your interest .
