Hi All, The irony of it all. My brother was Melvin Arthur Westall and he joined the US Navy very early in 1946. In March or so of 1946 he noticed the bruise on his foot that was not going away. He went to see the corpsman at the US Naval Hospital at Long Beach, CA. Melvin Arthur never left the hospital as he had cancer and passed away on 26 Oct 1946 at the Veterans Hospital, Portland, OR. The irony comes in when I was looking at the Commonwealth War Graves Commission website yesterday and found Arthur Westall age 18 who died 30 March 1919. Being a total sentimentalist that I am I could not leave it there. I had to know more about Arthur Westall. He was the son of Mr. & Mrs. Charles Westall of Hampstead, London, England. The 1901 English census says that Charles was a French Polisher (cabinet). The 1901 census shows Charles' family as: Charles Westall Head..M..30..French Polisher..Worker..Middlesex, St. Pancras Alice Westall Wife..M..30...........................................Middlesex, Bloomsbury Charles Westall Son...S....8...........................................Middlesex, St. Pancras Alice Westall Dau..S.....6...........................................Middlesex, St. Pancras Patrick Westall Son..S....4...........................................Middlesex, St. Pancras Arthur Westall Son..S....10 months.............................Middlesex, St. Pancras The father of Charles Westall was William Westall b ca.1839 and he was a painter. The 1871 census shows the family as: William Westall Head..M..36..Painter....Middlesex, St. Pancras Harriett Westall Wife...M..31..Ironer.....Surrey, Tooting Darnell Westall Dau....S..11..Scholar...Middlesex, St. Pancras "Harriet" Elizabeth Westall Dau....S...8..Scholar...Middlesex, St. Pancras Annie Westall Dau....S...6..Scholar....Middlesex, St. Pancras Malter Westall Son....S...2.................Middlesex, St. Pancras "Willie" Williams father was Thomas Westall b ca. 1794 in Mayden, Oxfordshire, Eng. The 1851 census shows the family as: Thomas Westall Head..M..57..Artist Landscape Painter....Mayden, Oxfordshire Elizabeth Westall Wife...M..57..........................................St. Giles George Westall Son...S..31..Picture Cleaner & Restorer..Newbury, Berkshire John Westall Son...S..27..Picture Cleaner & Restorer..St. Eles, Oxfordshire Thomas Westall Son...S..21..Landscape Painter...............Cheltenham, Gloucestershire Selina Westall Dau...S..16..Laundress............................Cheltenham, Gloucestershire William Westall Son...S..12..Scholar................................St. Pancras, Middlesex This family does not seem to tie to the artist William Westall b 12 Oct 1781 Norwich, Berkshire, Eng. and his step brother Richard Westall b 02 Jan 1765 Reepham, Norfolk, England. Obviously they also were artists for a couple of generations though! Does the above look familiar to anyone? I would deeply appreciate any thoughts from anyone. For the moment this seems to be another Westall Family Group or at least that is a possibility? Gooday Bob Arthur Westall (2nd Lt RFC) was my uncle. Arthur had three sisters and four brothers. The family home was at Oak Village. I cannot recall whether this was in Hampstead or St. Pancras. Two of his brothers also fought in the Great War. My Father was 8years old when Arthur died. I hope this is of some help. Ron, I am sending you the Genealogy report on Arthur's family to your home email as it is too large to send through the WESTALL Mailing list. Please look it over and let me know if I have any big goofs. I only found 1 sister and two brothers for Arthur. Could you possibly fill in the siblings I am missing and any other info you can on this Westall family group. Was your father Walter b Oct - Dec 1910 in St. Pancras? The further back I could come up with was Thomas b 1794 in Mayden, Oxfordshire, Eng. Can you take it any further back? It is always exciting to add more to our family data base! :-) My hope is to find a bridge to other Westall Family groups I already have. It must have been hard on your dad as I lived loosing Melvin Arthur at age nine. Sixty two years later I still find it difficult to talk about and I think of him every day. Thank you so very much for responding to my email. When I work on our family it is like being a Detective and I spend many hours searching for the clues! I look forward to hearing from you about the info on your family.
