    3. Hi Gillian, This is what I have in my notes, 'William Westall was transported to NSW in 1830 for his part in the Berkshire 'Swing' riots. He had been arrested in Kintbury, Berks. He appears on the convicts list for the prison hulk Eleanor, which sailed from Portsmouth for NSW on 15th Feb 1831 (he had been convicted at Reading Assizes on 27 Dec 1830 and was given a Life sentence). He was freed on 9 Nov 1837 so he had served just 7 years of his sentence. It is not clear what happened to him after he was freed, but possibly he returned to the UK. Note that at the time of deportation it was stated he was 20 yrs old, which would have given a birth date of abt. 1810.' The only William Westall I have on my tree who could fit the above profile was born in abt 1806 in Baydon, Wilts. He was the son of Thomas Westall (1770, Baydon) and Sarah Bray (1766, Baydon). It would still make him 3 or 4 years older than stated on the assize court record. But all my other William Westall's born around that time are accounted for. I hope this helps. Of course, there could be a lot of his descendants in the antipodes waiting for us to track them down! 3. Thanks Fred, Good to hear from you; I think most convicts didn't come back. I believe there was also a Richard Westall who went to Tasmania from Berks. (but I am working from memory). I was reading a book by David Kent on the Convicts who went on the Eleanor and came across the name. I am at uni, and he is my professor in this subject. So it's a small world. 3. Gill, I know that a Richard Westall was transported to Tasmania in 1830 on the Lord William Bentinck for his part in the Berkshire Swing Riots. I don't know what happened to him after that. One possibility is Richard Westall (bap 25 May 1758, Hungerford). I believe he married Caroline Lumley on 24 Aug 1815. So far I know of only two Westall's (William and Richard) who were convicted for their part in the Swing Riots in 1830 (named after 'Captain Swing' and his machine breakers). Coincidentally, another William Westall ARA accompanied Flinders on his expedition to map Australia and made some of the earliest landscape pictures of the continent. He was the brother of the famous artist Richard Westall RA (who taught the young Queen Victoria to paint in watercolours). I am certain that these two Richard/Westall artists were in no way associated with the Swing Riots! ;o) William Westall even has a mountain (Mt. Westall) named after him in Queensland. In case you know anyone influential (like an expert on Swing riots for example!) I am still waiting and willing for someone to offer me a mountain to be named after! ;0) It's amazing that you are a student of Prof. David Kent who I knew had authored a book on the convicts of the Eleanor (with Norma Townsend). I must get a copy as it sounds like compulsory reading to me. (I believe it is available in the UK published by Merlin Press Ltd). Summary: 'This book focuses on the men of the convict transport Eleanor, who arrived in NSW in 1831. They were all from the counties of Berkshire, Dorset, Hampshire and Wiltshire and were transported for their part in the Swing riots-the great agricultural protest of 1830-31. This episode spread across much of southern England and has been called the last peasants' revolt, led to more than 480 people being sent to Australia ("the largest single group in the history of transportation") (George Rude). Thanks for this lead. Tis indeed a small World!
