Hi Bob and all Westall researchers, I last emailed last October re my great great great great grandfather Thomas Westall, a landscape painter born in Oxford, (probably St Magdalen). At that time I was under the misapprehension that he had married an Elizabeth King, but their youngest son's birth certificate from 1838 revealed her name as being Elizabeth Cocker. A connection via genesreunited with a descendant of another of their sons, Thomas junior, has been a real breakthrough. Jacqui, (who will be joining us here soon) had found details of a marriage for Thomas Westall and Elizabeth Cocker at St Mary Magdalen, Oxford, on 30 October 1815, but wasn't sure if she had the right Thomas Westall. Luckily we were able to pool our information to confirm this, and we have been happily collaborating on our Westall family ever since. We know that sons George c1820 Newbury, Berkshire, John c1823 Oxford, and Thomas c1830 Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, were all landscape painters at one time, though Thomas and younger brother William later became house painters. George earned a living as a picture framer/restorer in London and my great great great grandmother, the widowed Harriet Calcutt nee Westall (c1817 Newbury, Berkshire) lived with him at Hampstead for at least 20 years. Sadly they both died in the Hampstead Union Workhouse in 1900 within four months of one another. Their brother John did quite well for himself as a landscape painter and one of his works can be seen at http://www.aspireauctions.com/auction21/details/2831.html He moved to Birmingham in the 1860's and later married a woman some 25 years his junior. They had many children, some of whom emigrated to Canada. As well as the above-mentioned four sons and daughter Harriet, Thomas and Elizabeth also had daughters Elizabeth, Ann Alice, and Selina. They all had lots of children so hopefully someone descended from one or another of them will see this and add some more details. Regards, Pat
Gill and Christine, I note you both live in Australia, I wonder if that has anything to do with it? Have just tried again All I get when I click on 'see image' is a nearly blank screen, and message at bottom 'Transferring data from content.ancestry.co.uk' At the top of the screen I get the usual 50 - 200% option, the 'image no 2 of 24' or whatever, print, save, share etc. I have tried several times, on different people. All the other censuses are in full working order. Anyone from UK had the same problem? As I typed I had a thought, and it has paid off! I can get the images from ancestry.com, but not from ancestry.co.uk. Problem solved, was worth writing in! Ancestry has just put 1841 census online, but without any images! I wanted to find the following family from 1851 census, my GGG and GG great grandfathers, Thomas Westall snr and jnr. 1851 census Thomas Westall, Head, Widr, M, 45, Shoemaker, Berks, Reading Thomas Westall, Son, M, 17, Printer, Middx, St Giles Edmund Franklin, Nephew, Widr, M, 21, Shoemaker, Middx, St Giles Living at 56, Dudley Street, St Giles in the Fields, Finsbury HO 107/1509 Folio 389 p12 I have found several Thomas Westall's living in London, none of them appear to fit the bill from name, approx year and place of birth, and without seeing the image to check up on the occupation, the info is almost useless. I have found a couple of other families I know to be right from the family groupings, but with only the 2 names to go on I am getting nowhere fast. Why did they put it online before it was ready?! Has anyone info re this family, other than the following? Thomas WESTALL, son of John WESTALL and Martha DAVIS, was born about 1807 in Reading, Berkshire, England and died on ? Mar qtr 1872 in Pancras, London, Middlesex, England about age 65. Thomas married Maria BURDEN on 30 Oct 1831 in St Anne's Soho, Westminster, London, Middlesex, England. Maria died before 1851. (see later). They had one son: Thomas John. Thomas John WESTALL was born on 2 May 1833 in St Giles Parish, London, England, was christened on 19 Apr 1834 in St Giles Church, London, England, and died ? Dec qtr 1913 in Pancras, London, Middlesex, England at age 80. I have another name, given by Mick Westall, for Thomas snr's wife as Maria FRANKLIN, rather than Burden. I cannot find any record of this marriage, however Edmund Franklin given as nephew of Thomas snr in 1851. The name of Maria BURDEN is from IGI and Pallott's Marriage Index. Hallo, I am a Wastell living in Australia and I have been researching all the Wastells of London. My family came from John Wastell & Ann Mayhew, m. 1730. I have been looking at Westells in Berks to see whether a William Wastell who married Louisa Miles and Agatha Whalley came from there. Some people think this William Wastell, b. between 1788 and 1796 was the son of William Wastell & Amelia ? who are in John & Ann Mayhew's line. I have questions about this because all of the generations I have found have been tradespeople in John & Ann Mayhew's family. John was a silk weaver and their sons, their sons' sons, and some of their sons' sons followed them into the trade. Then along comes this William Wastell who is clearly educated (his signature on both his marriage allegations is beautifully executed with flourishes, etc). Then he marries twice into gentility. His first wife, Louisa Miles was the daughter of Sir Jonathan Miles. His second wife was Agatha Whalley, and her brother Sir Samuel St Swithins Whalley was the member of parliament for Marylebone. [Sir Jonathan Miles owned the Hoxton Madhouse and William was the proprietor after Sir Jonathan died in the early 1820s until his death in about 1836. In the 1881 census William Wastell's widow, Agatha Wastell was living in Cookham, Berks next door to John Wastell, a surgeon, born in 1806. In the 1851 to 1871 censuses and on IGI, the family is called Westell (one says Wessell). It seemed to me there must be a relationship so I began to research John Westell's background and did find his family back to about 1730. There is a William Westell (would be John's cousin) b. in Cookham, Berks in 1796. However other males in the family were plumbers (about three of them). I suppose there is a similarity between being a plumber and being a surgeon! I also tried to seek a connection between William and Agatha Wastell and Richard and William Westall the artists. William and Agatha had three sons who went to Australia and one who went to Canada. William Westall was the ship's artist for Matthew Flinders on an early discovery voyage to Australia. So his work is well known here. Richard was more famous than William (he didn't travel as much). He taught Queen Victoria to do water colours. Both of them mixed with the literary giants of the day: Wordsworth, Byron, for instance and lived in London (William lived half time in the Lake District). This artist William Westall's family came from Norfolk (father Benjamin). William had a son born in St. Pancras in 1822, the year William and Agatha were married. William and Agatha's children were baptized in St. Pancras. William Westall b. 1822 (son of William Westall the artis) had a Masters from Cambridge and three of his children studied at Cambridge. He was a clergyman and lived in a number of places. His wife was Selina. One of his children was a Rosetta (that name was in William and Agatha's family), one was Beatrice Agatha. Anyway, these are slight links that make me wonder and investigate. I just wonder if anyone out there has any more insights about William of William & Agatha Whalley. I have other thoughts about his origin, but this is enough for now.
Would you believe that there are 4 Westall/Woolford marraiges that I have found so far. Frankly, it appears that these two families are intertwined in the Ramsbury, Wiltshire area. George Westall m Mary Woolford in the Oct - Dec 1862 Sarah Ann Westall m Ambrose Woolford in the Jan - Mar 1875 William Westall m Sara Maria Woolford in the Jan - Mar 1894 Edith Westall m Edwin Woolford in the Oct - Dec 1910 My eyes are going crossed as I have been playing with this for a large part of the weekend. Bob Wilfred, could your Tye be Sarah M. westall b Bet. Jan - Mar 1895 to William and Sarah? It definitely shows a son by the name of Edward W. b 1898. Chistine Can You tell me where William Westall married Jane Woolford? I haveFound a George Westall b 1841 m Mary Woolford b 9 June 1839 in the Hungerford District of Ramsbury, Wiltshire, England Bet. Oct - Dec 1862. Her father was Joseph Woolford b 1809 m Charlotte Dobson (b 1810 Axford, Wiltshire, Eng). Joseph and Charlotte were m 14 May 1832 Ramsbury, Wiltshire, Eng which was found in www.familyseach.org. Interestingly George Westall and Mary lived next door to her father Joseph Woolford in the 1881 British Census at 85 High Street. Wilfred, I have forwarded our emails to the reasearch Mailing list for the Westall family. There are 60 to 70 members world wide. Christine from Australia answered with the email below aboutJane Woolford and William Westall's marriage in 1771! Another interesting point is Edward or Edwin Woolford the father of your Sarah M. Woolford that m William Westall in 1894. I first thought that he was the son of Joseph Woolford but now I am not so sure of it? Who, me confused? Bob, Thanks for that. One thing though, Arthur John Westall died 5 Dec 1901, Arthur Westall, his father, died 10 Dec 1906, and his brother Thomas Brigden Westall (my grandfather), died 28 Mar 1937. So by the looks of things, Arthur John was the first burial in that grave in Mitcham, Surrey. Actually, writing it down like that clears the air! Arthur John Westall's birth was registered in Watford, Herts, where his father was a Licensed Victualler. His death was registered in Croydon, Surrey and he was buried in Mitcham. The family settled there, and presumably/possibly bought a plot. I know that Thomas Brigden Westall ran the Station Hotel in Norwood. Both Thomas Brigden and Ure Mary Jane Westall births were registered in Pancras, so presumably the babies would have been born and buried in the same district, perhaps in grave with their London Westall relatives Margaret
Margaret, Good work on this. There could be many reasons for the two babies not being buried with the others. Although it may not be the reason it struck me that, as you mentioned, those babies would have died before 25 May 1896 Ure Mary's date of birth. The first person buried in the grave died at least 6 to 10 years later. Depending on the economic status of the family they may not have even owned the grave site when the babies died. You may find the two babies buried somewhere else? Margaret, of all the possible reasons "would they not have been buried if they died at or shortly after birth?" would be the last reason I would think? Up until today I was under the impression that Arthur and Jane Westall had only 3 children Thomas Brigden Westall, born 22 April 1885, Grays Inn Lane my grandfather Ure Mary Jane Westall, born 25 May 1896, Pancras Arthur John Westall, birth registered Jun qtr 1901, died 5 Dec 1901 Arthur Westall, Thomas Brigden Westall and Arthur John Westall buried in same grave in Mitcham, Surrey. I am pretty sure of this as my birthday is exactly 100 years later - to the day! He was christened on 19/4/1834.'' So, I think this death reg is probably correct. Margaret

Joanne, You currently live in Wales? Has your family been in Wales for many years? I am looking at the 1861 British Census for Wales and there are three Westall families. James is the Head of one, John the 2nd, and Frederick b . James was b in 1829 in Gloucester, Gloucestershire, England. John was b in 1824 in Middlesex, England. Frederick b 1824 in Clifton, Gloucestershire, England. It would not surprise me if James and Frederick were related! Could you please ask your dad to email me? I would love to communicate with him! Happy New Year. To One and All, May all members of the Westall family every where have a very Merry Christmas and the most wonderful of New Years in 2006! Bob Westall List Administrator
Jo, In order for the entire Mailing List to know what is being discussed I am responding to your email via the List! Back in November of 2001 I did send you an email about the Westall family! :-) Castries is the capital of St. Lucia and it is located in the North by northwest corner of the island. There is a small airport in Castries and the Choc Cemetery where Thomas is buried is literally across the street from that small airport. The main airport is on the very southern tip of the island with runways long enough to allow larger jets to land. It is an adventurous 40 some mile drive to Castries from the main airport. The roads are narrow, very winding and full of potholes! It took an experienced driver an hour and 40 minutes to get us from the main airport to Castries upon our arrival on 12/5/05. :-) There were several couples being married in Castries where we staid at the Sandals Halcyon were Enid and I staid. There are three Sandals resorts on the island. The one we staid at was the smallest and most intimate. The St. Lucian people were absolutely marvelous, friendly, caring, and tried to please you at every turn. I could not speak highly enough about them. We will return for another visit one day I am sure! The resort we staid at had a very large number of people from everywhere in England visiting there. We were told that everything being included meant that it was cheaper to travel that far for two weeks to go scuba diving say than to do it in England. The food was absolutely great and all the booze was included also. The only place you paid anything extra was at Mario's, the Italian restaurant if you went for the very expensive wines. I took some 200+ pictures so I will need to get them off the discs as my camera which is a digital with small 212 GB discs. I am not good at taking pictures but this camera even made me a decent cameraman! :-) Please get with your dad and get him to give you info that will take you back before the 1891 and 1901 British Census. Also try to take your family back before they lived in Wales if you can. If your family has lived there for over 100 to 150 years that is fine also as I have those census also. I look forward hearing from you and I will forward some of the pictures to you ASAP. :-) Bob Westall ----- Original Message ----- From: "JOANNE WESTALL" <jwestall@excite.com> To: <bobatbmw@cox.net> Sent: Wednesday, December 14, 2005 3:42 AM Subject: RE: Thomas George Westall of St. Lucia > > Hi Bob > > Joanne Westall here - Wales UK. > > My dad is recently becoming more and more interested in the Westall family > history. Hi Everyone, Enid & I just got back from St. Lucia where we spent the last week looking for anything to do with our Thomas George Westall. We did fine Thomas' headstone in the Choc Cemetery in St. Lucia, West Indies. I took pictures of it before and after I had it cleaned and painted. It now looks good and it also has a picture of Thomas above the inscription. The gentleman that runs the cemetery was kind enough to try and find Caroline Agatha Westall's burial site, but as it is noted on the records he found that her site was "Unconcreted" meaning there was no headstone? It did note that she was buried in the South East corner of Section "Q". Thomas is buried in the vary same corner of Section "Q" which could vary well mean he is buried over Caroline? I took pictures of Caroline's burial record and will be happy to send them to anyone wishing them! Thomas headstome reads the following: IN MEMORIAM T. G. WESTALL J. P. 1854 -1938 HE FOUGHT A GOOD FIGHT HE FINISHED HIS COURSE HE KEPT THE FAITH Thomas was the owner of Westall,s Drug store. When he died he evidently willed it to R. J. Clarke, the then govenor of St. Lucia. As you can see it now is "R.J. Clarke Ltd" as I did take several pictures of the store. Thomas is held in quite high regard by many of the St. Lucians as he gave much away free to those that were in need but could not pay for what they needed. I had rented a car and as the car was a right hand drive on the left side of the road my driving turned out to be a little bit of an adventure. No mishaps occured during my week of driving though. I drove all over Castries looking for both Westall Street and the monument to Thomas. The streets are unmarked and no amount of driving brought me to his monument. I was very taken by the warmth and kindness of the St. Lucian people that I met. I will return there one day I am sure! Anyone wishing pictures please let me know and I will send them to you. John C. W., I have a copy of Caroline Westall's Death Certificate. On her date of death May 16th, 1929 in St. Lucia she was 66 years old on her last birthday. The age fits better for this Caroline who was born in India in 1862. Caroline/India's father was a Major General in Her Majesties Indian Army. Caroline/India's son, John Hampton Westall was made a Lt in the British Army in WWI and became a pilot. He was shot down by the Germans. Today I spoke with Caroline/India's grandson, Thomas George Westall b 16 Jan 1946 in Manhattan, New York. Tom said that his father was repatriated and for that to happen you had to have status! This might make sense as his mother's father was a Major General in the British Army. Another point of interest is that Caroline/India's grandmother born in Cape of Good Hope in 1804 had the first name of Caroline! A point of interest might also be that the other Caroline that was born in Sleaford, Lincolnshire, Eng was shown to have been born in Jun 1864. Although I am not through I have included some of the info from Caroline/India's family for your review. I look forward to your comments on this! Hello all! For some time I have been looking for the wife of Thomas George Westall. Thomas was one of the founding father's of St. Lucia, West Indies. His wife was Caroline Agatha Hutchinson and I thought she had been found in the 1881 British Census living in 63 East Road, New Sleaford, Lincolnshire, England. At the time it showed her working as a Servant to the James C. Ascough family at the same address. Frankly, this has always bothered me because I had believed that Thomas had been born ca. 1853 in London or Middlesex. My attempts to trace Thomas have not born much fruit but it just never quite sounded right to me that he would walk in such circles as he did and his wife had been someones servant and at that in Lincolnshire? Anyway last night I made a discovery that just may explain a lot. I found three Hutchinson sisters living as boarders in the 1871 British Census at 2 Upper Park Road, District # 2, Hampstead St John, London. They lived in the Elizabeth Ottley residence with the 3 grown Ottley daughters, and 5 other young lady boarders. The ages of the 8 boarders ranged from 18 to age 9. The three Hutchinson girls were Louisa 11, Alice 10, and Caroline 9. Another interesting point is that the 3 Hutchinson girls were not born in England but in Arrah Bongah, India and it noted in the census that they were Br. Subjects! That being the case it would show why their births do not show in Free BMD! To try and follow this back further I looked up Louisa age 11 in 1871 in the 1861 census and found her living with her parents and siblings in Alveston, Warwickshire and believe it or not Alexander Hutchinson (Head)was born in India as was Louisa. Another very interesting point is that Alexander's mother lived with them and she was Caroline b 1804 in Cape of Good Hope. Alexander was also a Major in H. M. Indian Army! This would also explain why Alexander is living in England some census and not in other census. Again Louisa age two was born in India and her younger sister Frances was just 2 months old and was born in Alveston, Warwickshire. In the 1861 the Hutchinson family had 6 servant with them at 3 Tiddington House Court where they lived! All of this makes some sense as I found Frances with her mother Constance living in District 9, Eastbourne, Sussex with her younger siblings. Two of those younger siblings Anton age 11 and Georgina age 9 were both born in India ca. 1870 and 1872. Remember Caroline and her two older sisters were living with the Ottley family in London in the 1871 Census as boarders. Thomas George Westall obviously had standing in society and I believe this Caroline Hutchinso's family had standing as well. Frankly, I believe this may the the actual wife of Thomas. Another point of interest I have the Death Certificate for both Thomas and his wife Caroline from St. Lucia, West Indies. Another point I will be in St. Lucia on the afternoon of December 5th through the afternoon of December 12th 2005. I intend to do some nosing around to see what I can see.
