Hello, I have noticed the mails concerning Oxfordshire recently and thought I would enquire if anybody has information regarding David Westall and Alice Ewen who married 1787 at Ipsden, Oxon. Thank you, Regards, Ron http://web.onetel.com/~ronperry
Hello Fred Well bless your dear heart ! I can't wait to see what info you have. I am from New Brunswick, Canada and am so interested in finding out as much as I can about my dear departed ancestors. :) I shall journey to England in the autumn of this year and am hoping to meet some of my cousins. You are my first one! Are there any grave sites to visit with our ancestors names on them? Please do tell me a bit about yourself and do feel free to ask me anything that you like. Perhaps you'd like to know about William's son Joseph and his descendants. Which of William's children is your 2xGt.Grandfather or Grandmother? He had 3 sons and 1 daughter I do believe.. I am so thrilled that you wrote to me . Thank you so very, very much. Hello again, Royce Lee Westall was born in Hendersonville, Henderson Co., NC on 22 Nov 1935. For the life of me I can not tie him to his parents. Can anyone help me on this? The SSDI shows the following: ROYCE WESTALL, b 22 Nov 1935, d 02 Apr 2006, (V) 28791 (Hendersonville, Henderson, NC <http://resources.rootsweb.com/USA/NC/Henderson> ) (none specified) 237-56-1898 North Carolina. Royce's wife was Jo Ann Verlene Silver. The SSDI shows the following for her: VERLENE S WESTALL, b 06 Sep 1939, d 29 Aug 2003, (V) 28758 (Mountain Home, Henderson, NC <http://resources.rootsweb.com/USA/NC/Henderson> ) (none specified) 241-62-3406 North Carolina. Any assist would be greatly appreciated as the 1940 Census that will give me the info will not be out for years! :-( Regards to all, Bob Westall

A HAPPY CHRISTMAS AND MERRY NEW YEAR to all Westall listers Bob, I presume you keep a Westall database of some description. I would like to amend it in light of some research I have done into my Westall branch. 2 years ago, when I was just starting out in my family tree research, you sent me the following info regarding Mary Maria Westall. Bob Thank you so much for all the details you've found for Mary Ann CANNING [nee WESTALL] who settled in Pottawattamie County, Iowa [on the historic Mormon trail to Utah] with husband George and children. It appears they terminated their trek at Pottawattamie, where they appear to have raised quite a sizeable family. Any idea of the pronunciation for the place? This is my first encounter with US Census records so please excuse my ignorance. Do the high numbers [600 and 200 in 1861 and 1500 and 500 in 1871] relate to monetary evaluations of real estate and personal estate? Do you know of a website which assists in understanding the content of US Census returns? Any help greatly appreciated: seems I've embarked on yet another steep learning curve! Kind regards. A quick reminder of my Westall interests. My 3G grandfather, Thomas Westall was born c 1804 - 1807 in Reading, Berkshire. His son Thomas John Westall was born 2 May 1833, baptised 19 Apr 1934, St Giles, London. Information provided by Mick Westall is that Thomas snrs wife was Maria Franklin, but I have been unable to find any confirmation of this. Pallot's marriage index gives a Thomas Westall/Maria Burden marriage in 1831, IGI gives the same marriage on 30 Oct 1831, Saint Anne Soho, Westminster. I have full census information for this family, with the exception of 1841 census, was hoping to find a sibling or two for Thomas jnr. 1851 census Thomas Westall, Head, Widr, M, 45, Shoemaker, Berks, Reading Thomas Westall, Son, M, 17, Printer, Middx, St Giles Edmund Franklin, Nephew, Widr, M, 21, Shoemaker, Middx, St Giles Address 56, Dudley Street, St Giles in the Fields, Finsbury HO 107/1509 Folio 389 p12 Edmund Franklin possibly as follows in 1841 census, though the age is not right it's the nearest match! - William Franklin, M, 50, Painter I, N Ann Franklin, F, 40, N Ann Franklin, F, 15, N Edmund Franklin, M, 7, N Emma Franklin, F, 4, N Francis Franklin, M, 2, N Address City (?) Gardens, St Mary's Islington, Finsbury HO 107/664/2 Folio 18 p2 I cannot trace this family in 1851 census as a whole, no idea of where any of them were born, and cannot directly link them to Thomas Westall and his nephew Edmund Franklin in 1861 census. I am wondering if Thomas snr had a sister Ann Westall who married William Franklin? Can anyone help me with the 1841 missing census or the Franklin/Burden conundrum? Wishing everyone a Happy Christmas and a Merry new Year Margaret _________________________________________________________________ Be the first to hear what's new at MSN - sign up to our free newsletters! http://www.msn.co.uk/newsletters
Many thanks, Bob. It was great to receive confirmation that all the children survived the journey. I don't know what became of George junr or Ebenezer subsequently, as I've not found them in the US Census of 1880. The IGI has a marriage in 1861 between Mary Jane CANNING [the eldest daughter] and Cuthbert William RAIN, but I've not found them in the 1880 index although they are recorded buried at Pottawattamie in 1923 and 1918 respectively. Only one child has been attributed to them: Charles Franklin RAIN born c1871 at Pottawattamie. Kind regards. Dorothy, So far I have not been able to come up with George Jr. or Ebenezer either. Also Cuthbert William Rain and Mary Jane had a total of 3 children as noted in the 1900 Fedederal census. In 1900 only Charles F. was living. Their eldest was Frederick b ca. 1863. What I have been able to come up with to date follows: Bob Descendants of George Canning Generation No. 1 1. GEORGE1 CANNING was born 1824 in Eng. He married MARY ANN WESTELL 1842 in Newbury, Berkshire, Eng, daughter of WILLIAM WESTALL and SARAH LEWIS. The LDS membership register has a note that George was a Church Elder and they emigrated in 1849 [no destination recorded]. Thanks to Ancestry's extension of 'freebie' access to Immigration Records [expiring 31 December] I found the family on the New Orleans Passenger list of the James Pennell Ship which left Liverpool Oct 1849. From the names and recorded ages of the children I was able to confirm that I had the right family via their Newbury Registration District birth references in FreeBMD. George & Mary A.CANNING appear with 8 of their children [including Alice who was only 9 months old when they embarked] in the 1880 US Census at Council Bluffs, Pottawattamie, Iowa.
