Hi All, The irony of it all. My brother was Melvin Arthur Westall and he joined the US Navy very early in 1946. In March or so of 1946 he noticed the bruise on his foot that was not going away. He went to see the corpsman at the US Naval Hospital at Long Beach, CA. Melvin Arthur never left the hospital as he had cancer and passed away on 26 Oct 1946 at the Veterans Hospital, Portland, OR. The irony comes in when I was looking at the Commonwealth War Graves Commission website yesterday and found Arthur Westall age 18 who died 30 March 1919. Being a total sentimentalist that I am I could not leave it there. I had to know more about Arthur Westall. He was the son of Mr. & Mrs. Charles Westall of Hampstead, London, England. The 1901 English census says that Charles was a French Polisher (cabinet). The 1901 census shows Charles' family as: Charles Westall Head..M..30..French Polisher..Worker..Middlesex, St. Pancras Alice Westall Wife..M..30...........................................Middlesex, Bloomsbury Charles Westall Son...S....8...........................................Middlesex, St. Pancras Alice Westall Dau..S.....6...........................................Middlesex, St. Pancras Patrick Westall Son..S....4...........................................Middlesex, St. Pancras Arthur Westall Son..S....10 months.............................Middlesex, St. Pancras The father of Charles Westall was William Westall b ca.1839 and he was a painter. The 1871 census shows the family as: William Westall Head..M..36..Painter....Middlesex, St. Pancras Harriett Westall Wife...M..31..Ironer.....Surrey, Tooting Darnell Westall Dau....S..11..Scholar...Middlesex, St. Pancras "Harriet" Elizabeth Westall Dau....S...8..Scholar...Middlesex, St. Pancras Annie Westall Dau....S...6..Scholar....Middlesex, St. Pancras Malter Westall Son....S...2.................Middlesex, St. Pancras "Willie" Williams father was Thomas Westall b ca. 1794 in Mayden, Oxfordshire, Eng. The 1851 census shows the family as: Thomas Westall Head..M..57..Artist Landscape Painter....Mayden, Oxfordshire Elizabeth Westall Wife...M..57..........................................St. Giles George Westall Son...S..31..Picture Cleaner & Restorer..Newbury, Berkshire John Westall Son...S..27..Picture Cleaner & Restorer..St. Eles, Oxfordshire Thomas Westall Son...S..21..Landscape Painter...............Cheltenham, Gloucestershire Selina Westall Dau...S..16..Laundress............................Cheltenham, Gloucestershire William Westall Son...S..12..Scholar................................St. Pancras, Middlesex This family does not seem to tie to the artist William Westall b 12 Oct 1781 Norwich, Berkshire, Eng. and his step brother Richard Westall b 02 Jan 1765 Reepham, Norfolk, England. Obviously they also were artists for a couple of generations though! Does the above look familiar to anyone? I would deeply appreciate any thoughts from anyone. For the moment this seems to be another Westall Family Group or at least that is a possibility? Oliver, I have been nosing around Wiltshire's 1841 English Census and have not been able to get even a clue as to the parents of George, Henry, and Mariah Westall. Have you gotten any further? It leads me to possibly believe that either the parents were dead in 1841 or the last name was misspelled in the 1841 census. I have looked under Westall, Wastall, Westell, and Waistall to name a few! I have come up with nothing! I did come up with the following which is what led me to believe the parents might have died earlier? Taken from the 1851 British Census Name: Henry Westall Age: 25 Estimated birth year: abt 1826 Relation: Head Gender: Male Where born: Axford, Wiltshire, England Civil parish: Ramsbury County/Island: Wiltshire Country: England Street address: 37 Axford Condition as to marriage: Unmarried Occupation: Agricultural Laborer Source information: HO107/1686 Registration district: Hungerford Sub-registration district: Kintbury ED, institution, or vessel: 11 Folio: 432 Page: 12 Household schedule number: 37 GSU Number: 193594 Henry Westall Head..S..25..Agricul Lab..Wilts, Axford George Brother..S..27..Agricul Lab..Wilts, Axford Meriah Sister...S..19....................Wilts, Axford Do you have any thoughts that might give me some direction? Dorothy, The best suggestion I have come up with relevant to William parents and place of birth would probably be his death certificate as mentioned in an earlier email. Earlier you had mentioned not to worry about the census material but it is hard to follow the trail if you don't keep track of them! J Anyway, one thing led to another and I finally decided that William & Sarah deserve their own Westall Family Group. What I came up with follows. I hope there is material in it that will be of some use to you. If you find any goofs please let me know. Oh yes, all of the children that are in the 1856 Iowa State Census are also in the 1860 US Census, but Sarah Westall is not. This being so Sarah may or may not have died in the severe winter of 1856 but none of her grandchildren died that winter. Ebenezer was in the 1870 census but I could not find him after that. This Descendants of William Westall is in two emails. This is the first. Regards Bob Descendants of William Westall Generation No. 1 1. WILLIAM1 WESTALL was born 1800 in England, and died Bet. And of course, there is also 'my' William WESTALL - origins unknown - who married Sarah LEWIS, a minor, in 1820 at Newbury St Nicolas. He died in 1840, supposedly aged 39, and left no clue in a census whether or not he was Berkshire-born. I've only recently discovered that widow Sarah WESTHALL [sic] left these shores [UK] in 1853 in the wake of her only daughter, Mary Ann CANNING, on the Mormon trail to Utah: last sighting 1856 with George CANNING, Mary Ann & family at Council Bluffs, Pottawattamie Co., Iowa. The impending Winter was the worst on record: the mercury sunk to minus 36%. Did she perish with a couple of her CANNING grandsons? How on earth did they accomplish burials in those conditions? Sadly, I may never know, but I live in hope that 'something will turn up ..........' The elder CANNINGs remained at Council Bluffs for life, but one son did complete the trek to Salt Lake City in the early 1900s. One recorded his mother's maiden name WESTON instead of WESTALL at marriage, so that may cause problems for his branch should they research their origins from USA. ################################# Iowa State Census, 1895 Name: Mary Canning Age: 72 Race: White Birthplace: England RESIDENCE: Connect Bluffs;Kane, Pottawattamie More About MARY ANN WESTALL: Census: 1850, District 21, Pottawattamie Co., IA Immigration: 23 Oct 1849 Occupation: 1880, Keeping House Notes for GEORGE CANNING: New Orleans Passenger Lists, 1820-1945 Name: Mary A Canning Arrival Date: 23 Oct 1849 Age: 24 Gender: Female Port of Departure: Liverpool, England Ship Name: James Pennell Port of Arrival: New Orleans, Louisiana National Archives' Series Number: George Canning 25..Male....Taylor..England Mary A. 24..Female............England Mary G. 6..Female.............England George 4..Male..................England Ebeneza 2..Male..................England ############################### 1850 United States Federal Census Name: George Canning Age: 26 Estimated Birth Year: abt 1824 Birth Place: England Gender: Male Home in 1850(City,County,State): District 21, Pottawattamie, Iowa George Canning 26..M..Tailor..England Mary Ann 24 ..F.............England Mary 7..F .............England George 5..M.............England Ebenezer 4..M.............England Alice 2..F.............England ############################### Iowa State Census Collection, 1836-1925 Name: George Canning Census Date: 1851 Residence County: Pottawattamie Residence State: Iowa Gender: Male Birth Year: abt 1823 Line: 35 Roll: IA_118 George Canning 28 Mary Ann 27 Mary J. 7 George 6 Ebenezer 4 Alice 2 ################################ Iowa State Census Collection, 1836-1925 Name: George Canning Census Date: 1856 Residence County: Pottawattamie Residence State: Iowa Locality: Kane Birth Location: England Family Number: 71 Marital Status: Married Gender: Male Birth Year: abt 1821 Line: 18 Roll: IA_64 George Canning 35..M..7..England..Farmer Mary Ann 30..F..7..England Mary Jane 13..F..7..England Geo 11..M..7..England Ebenezer 9..M..7..England Allice 7..F..7..England Orson 5..M.....IA Frank 1..M.....IA Sarah Westall 52..F..7..England Horatio Lovell 25..M.....England...Laborer Lewis Rubell 34..M.....France.....Laborer Henry Erchell 19..M.....Germany..Laborer Thomas Mason 20..M..2.England....Laborer Thomas Davis 23..M.....Wales......Laborer Alexander McCurdy 35..M..1..PA..........Laborer ############################### 1860 United States Federal Census Name: George Caning Age in 1860: 34 Birth Year: abt 1826 Birthplace: England Home in 1860: Kane, Pottawattamie, Iowa Gender: Male Post Office: Council Bluffs George Caning 34..M..Tailor..600..200..England Mary Ann 31..F...House Work.......England Mary J 15..F..............................England George 13..M.............................England Ebenezer 12..M.............................IA Alice 10..F..............................IA Orson 8..M.............................IA Frank 6..M.............................IA Albert 4..M.............................IA Ellen 1..F.............................IA John Huntington 33..M............................IL ################################ 1870 United States Federal Census Name: George Canning Estimated Birth Year: abt 1845 Age in 1870: 25 Birthplace: England Home in 1870: Council Bluffs Ward 1, Pottawattamie, Iowa Race: White Gender: Male Post Office: Council Bluffs G Canning 50..M..W..Taylor..1500..500..England M A 45..F..W....Keeping House.....England George 25..M..W.................................England Aben 22..M..W................................England Alice 21..F..W................................England Frank 17..M..W................................IA Albert 14..M..W................................IA Nellie 11..F..W.................................IA Wm 8..M..W................................IA Edward 7..M..W................................IA Kate 5..F..W.................................IA Walter 1..M..W.................................IA #################################### 1880 United States Federal Census Name: Geo. Hi Bob, Thanks for the mention, can I correct you please. John Westall's birth date is around 1811-1813 as far as my records show. Perhaps one day some evidence of his birth etc will come to light but no luck so far. I think your idea of a web site in the future showing all the Westall clan is a great idea. Carry on the good work! Doothy, The following information might be of use to you in getting a Death Certificate for William. Go to http://www.londonlist.org.uk/FAQ-Certificates.pdf and it will give you all the info as to how and where as well as how much it will cost you. The earliest date a certificate would be available is 1837 so William's death of 1840 fits. Good luck and regards Bob -------------------------------------------------------------------- mail2web LIVE Free email based on Microsoft® Exchange technology - http://link.mail2web.com/LIVE
----- Original Message ----- From: "Bob Westall" <bobatbmw@cox.net> To: <westall@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, August 03, 2008 7:57 PM Subject: Re: [WESTALL] Booth Winkley Westall b 1844, Manchester, Lancashire,Eng. > Margaret, > > Don't give up the ship. I know you have an interest in the wider WESTALL picture, I was just wondering if you had a particular interest in this family, rather than a general one. Presumably the latter. I have still got no further back than Thomas WESTALL c 1805 - 1807, Reading, Berkshire, a boot and shoemaker living in London in all known censuses bar 1841 - still not managed to find him. I don't think I will find him now, I have looked under all combinations possible. He was my 3G grandfather, and I would dearly love to find out more about him and his origins. 1881, no obvious signs, as you say, of Booth Winkley WESTALL. Possibility (and only that), that if his father went to USA, he visited him there in 1881. Margaret, There is a Booth Westall in the 1850 US Census, living in VA. age 50 born in England! There is also a Booth Westall buried in the NATIONAL CEMETERY AT KNOXVILLE, TENN. Westall, Booth "C" Co., 2nd Ohio Heavy Artillery, Jan 17, 1865, Sec. of Cem. 9, # of Grave 30 It seems to be a stretch that a 65 year old man born in England would come to the US in time to die in the Civil War, but who knows? Margaret, As noted Booth Winkley Westall was noted as a nephew when living with James and Jane Mills in Lancashire, England. I was just thinking out loud because so often when a person is noted as a niece or nephew and their name in the census is different from the Head of Household it seems more frequently they are a niece or nephews of the wife. Robert and Margaret Healey would be a perfect example of this with nephew Booth Winkley Westall living with them in the 1851 census? Sometimes it seems the more you know the more you realize you do not know? Margaret, In 1995 I knew nothing of my family but James Newton Westall and his wife Mary Josephine Westall nee Heltsley my grand parents and their children or a dozen people or so. I am from Seattle but in 1995 I was living in Annandale, VA where I still live. I met Ken Westall and it turned out that this stranger with my name was a long lost cousin with a Westall family tree of 200 people. I had always felt I would like to know much more about my family so my search began. In about 1997 I stared the this Mailing list so help facilitate Westall family members communicating with one another. It has been more successful than I thought possible with some 60+ plus members worldwide as I type this. When I started not all Westall names fit neatly into my immediate family but I never discarded anyone. As time went by I started what I call Westall Family Groups to keep tract of those that did not neatly fit. Today my immediate Westall Family Group totals just short of 14,000 people and I have 28 other Westall Family Groups with all told some 25,000 names with dates and places for birth, marriage, and death for a great many of them. Not long ago I found that Fred Westall's family from East Ilsley, Berkshire and the Elizabeth Westall family of New Brunswick Canada are one in the same and I merged the two making one family of over 900 names. Such merging are not common for me but they do happen from time to time. As foolish and impossible as it might sound I am working slowly at the goal of making "ONE WESTALL FAMILY" for the world. We have many famous Artists, Authors, statesmen, Scientists, Businessmen, Doctors, pioneers, heroes and the list is endless. As a Westall I am deeply proud of each and every one of them. We have played a not so small role in this worlds history. There is a monument to William G. "Billy" Westall out in the middle of nowhere in Colorado. Billy was an engineer with 300 to 400 people on his train heading back to Denver after an all day excursion. As the train came around a bend in the tracks Billy could see the tracks blocked ahead. The fireman jumped to safety and lived but Billy road the train to the bitter end trying to stop it to save all he could. Billy was pinned under the locomotive in the crash and died a few hours later. It is amazing to see the quite large monument to a man, a Westall, that stayed the course ever though he likely knew it would cost him dearly. Billy was married with a young family. Was Billy a hero, yes indeed, in every way. Why have I spent many thousands of dollars and even many more thousands of hours on this? When I went to St. Lucia and stood at the grave of Thomas George Westall I felt the deepest of pride in being a part of this family. Thomas was one of a few men that were instrumental of helping St. Lucia gain her independence from Great Britain. He was also one of the first three legislators to be elected in St. Lucia in the 1920's after gaining independance. His grandson Tom is part of this mailing list and I have spoken to him within the last few days. I was instrumental in assisting Ursala from Venezuela in getting in touch with Tom. I have not done it all by myself as there are many others that need to be recognized such as Mick, Richard Jeremy, Oliver, and so many others. It would not surprise me that in my computer lives the largest single data base every complied for the Westall family. In the next 10 to 20 years I hope to expand it greatly and some day have a private website where any Westall family member could go and find out where they fit in the bigger scheme of things. Will it ever come down to just one large family, probably not but I can dream. To sum it all up Margaret this has all become a "LABOR OF LOVE" for me that will never end! Thank you everyone for helping out with my dream! Margaret, Thank you for the info as I did not have it all. I think you are on spot with the Margaret Healey or Healy as I have seen it both ways. In the 1861 and 1871 census it shows Booth living with James and Jane Mills as a nephew again. Jane shows as being 63 in 1861. Could this possibly be Elizabeth b ca. 1799 (the elder Booth's sister)? I could not find Booth Winkley Westall in the 1881 census and in the 1891 census he is married to Annie Taylor Bet. Jan - Mar 1885 in Rochdale, Lancashire, Eng. It is late. Goodnight and thank you again.
