Hi Christine, I suspect our common ancestors were David Westall (1752, Baydon) and Hannah Sims (1751, Inkpen) who married on 26 Oct 1777 in Inkpen. They had three children: George (1780, Kintbury), Sarah (1777, Kintbury) and William (1783, Kintbury). My line goes via George and yours goes via William. I don't think Sarah had any children(?). Therefore I think you are my 5th cousin - or something like that. When did Westall become Westell in your line? I suspect that it happened with the children of John Westall (1804, Chilton Foliat) and Lucy Perrott (1802, Walcot, Bath Som). According to my records their eldest three children (Frederick (1830, Bristol), Elizabeth (1831, Bristol) and Lucy (1832)) all took the Westall name but the following five children (James (1834, Bedminster), Sarah (1836, Bedminster), John (1839, Bedminster), Rosa (1841, Bedminster) and William (1843, Bedminster)) all adopted the Westell name. It seems there was possibly also a daughter Julia (1846, Bristol) who took the Westall name. In other branches of my family the Westell name sometimes appears as a typographical error .. or should that be the other way around ^_^ In the 1891 census my great grandfather's family were wrongly recorded as the Wartall family! Henry Westall (Wartall) and his family of 10 were living in a three-roomed hut on the side of the Manchester ship canal at Rixton near Warrington where was a walking ganger (a sort of navvie foreman). Several of his descendants, my cousins, still live in Rixton and nearby in Leigh, Lancs. I live nearby in Stockport, Cheshire having been born in Cardiff Glamorgan. I think your connection with Liverpool is possibly via William Albert Westell (1843) who married Edith Elizabeth Gibbs (1858, Pembroke Dock) in 1889 in Liverpool, Lancs. Does any of this make sense? Hope this is useful. Hi Tim, Many thanks for this information. I agree with you down to Charles Westall (1809) who married Catherine Newport (1808) on 3 Jun 1827 in St James, Trowbridge. Their daughter, Caroline Westall (1833 - sister to your William (1828)) married Thomas Trull Davies (1828) in 1821 in Bath Somerset. >From them I can trace the line down to Cardiff Glam where some of their descendants live today! Possible parents of William Westell (1748) are William Westell (1720) and Mary Sollick (1720), who married 25 Jul 1744 in Trowbridge. I think that Williams (1720) parents were John Westall (1696, Keevil Wilts) and Mary Aishman (1697, Keevil Wilts) who married 30 Nov 1718, Keevil. That's as far back as I can get so far. Maybe the connection with the rest of my Wiltshire Westall's is an earlier generation, so far not proven. Hope this helps. Fred, It is nice to know that someone has traced their WESTALL line back so far. I am 'stuck' with my 3G grandfather, Thomas WESTALL, born c 1805 - 1807 in Reading, Berkshire, according to census information. He was a boot and shoemaker in London, where my 2G grandfather, Thomas John WESTALL, was born. Mick WESTALL's family were also London shoemakers, living in the same road, Dudley Street, as my family in 1851 census. Unless the situation has changed, he is no further back either. Didn't know there was an appreciable number of WESTALL's from Warrington. I live on the outskirts of Warrington - if anything specific could be looked up locally, I am willing to take a look. Hi Bob, Wow ... you really do have a great database of Westall's! By the way, who is the earliest Westall on your database? It seems that my earliest ancestor was William Westall (1638) who married Margery Willis (1630) on 1 April 1658 in Aldbourne Wilts. They were my 8x great grandparents. Their son, William Westall (1659) married Sarah Sylvester or Chilvester. Their son Edward Westall (1695) married Sarah Barnet (1698) in 1718, and then my line continues through son John Westall (1718) who married Hester Benfield (1720) in 1745. I think that the Richard Westall RA (the artist) line can be traced back much further but so far we have not been able to definitively link the Norfolk line of Westall's with my own line from Wiltshire/Berkshire. We have come tantalizingly close but no cigar yet! But I am quietly confident that there is a connection linking most of the southern English Westall's together. Currently I am trying to find the link between the Trowbridge Westall's and my own line. I think there may be a link via the Westall group in East Isley but I have not found it yet. I notice there is also a large group of Westall's based in the Oswaldwistle area of Lancashire near Huddersfield. I would love the find how that group came into being - was it a completely independent line or did they join the migration from the south to the north during the industrial revolution? The Westall's of North (Fylde) and West (Liverpool) Lancashire and Cheshire (Warrington) can all be traced back to remote branches of my own line. So far I have not found any Scottish Westall's but I have a lot of Scottish blood from my mother's side! Like you say Genealogy is fascinating. I only got into it about 3 years ago but now I am completely hooked. I am particularly interested in the lives of my ancestors, the historical context and the patterns of migration throughout the family. There's a lot still to do I think! ;0) Fred Westall (the third)

Thanks Bob. David Richard Westall (1882) was my 4th cousin twice removed. Hannah (Deadmarsh) Westall was originally born Hannah Russ (1842). She married Charles Deadmarsh in 1867 in Hungerford, and then remarried Thomas Westall in 1873 in Hungerford (RD). -------------------------------------------------- From: "Bob Westall" <bobatbmw@cox.net> Sent: Wednesday, September 17, 2008 2:25 AM To: <WESTALL-L@rootsweb.com> Subject: [WESTALL] David Richard Westall b 1882 > One more time, > > > > David Richard Westall born in the first quarter of 1882 in Lambourn, > Berkshire, Eng. Christine, I guess by default I have become the Holder of the Westall Data Base. As I search for my own line I continue to run across other Westall family members. No, they may not be a direct part of my family but I am trying to find every Westall and someday tie them all together. David Richard Westall is one such Westall. When I found him I could not in good conscious just leave him without a family if I could help it. Years ago I found two brothers that were in the Commonwealth War Graves Commission under WWII. They were: Robson Gray Westall, died 18/02/1941, a Sailor, Merchant Navy, age 21 James Paul Grey Westall, died 23/01/1944, Canteen Assistant, Royal Naval Canteen Service, H.M.S. Janus, age 17 They were the Son of William D. and Florence M. Westall, of North Shields, Northumberland. I called a Westall in North Shields, Tyne and Wear, England (was Northumberland.) and he was the younger brother of the two boys that died in the service of their country in WWII. He was quite wonderful and we spoke for quite some time. I sent him all I had on his family and I still call him from time to time. I hope this answers your question. I will forward to you what I have on this Westall line. Please look it over and let me know if I have any major errors. Ron, I am sending you the Genealogy report on Arthur's family to your home email as it is too large to send through the WESTALL Mailing list. Please look it over and let me know if I have any big goofs. I only found 1 sister and two brothers for Arthur. Could you possibly fill in the siblings I am missing and any other info you can on this Westall family group. Was your father Walter b Oct - Dec 1910 in St. Pancras? The further back I could come up with was Thomas b 1794 in Mayden, Oxfordshire, Eng. Can you take it any further back? It is always exciting to add more to our family data base! :-) My hope is to find a bridge to other Westall Family groups I already have. It must have been hard on your dad as I lived loosing Melvin Arthur at age nine. Sixty two years later I still find it difficult to talk about and I think of him every day. Thank you so very much for responding to my email. When I work on our family it is like being a Detective and I spend many hours searching for the clues! I look forward to hearing from you about the info on your family.
