    1. [WESTALL] John Newman Westall
    2. Bob Westall
    3. Everybody, John Newton Westall b 1815 in Ramsbury, Wiltshire was living at 29 High St in the 1851 Census. As I type this I am looking at the Satellite picture of Ramsbury and I have enlarged it to the point that I can clearly see the buildings on High ST, Ramsbury, Wiltshire. High St extends from Back Lane to where the name changes at the intersection Oxford St., High St, Scholard's Lane, and Back Lane. Amusingly if you look at Back Lane and High street from above they look like an American Football with Burdett St cutting the football in half. I apologize if I sound excited but I have struggled for years trying to understand the geography and relationship of one town with another and this map gives me all of that in one shot! 1. [WESTALL] Wiltshire Map
    2. Bob Westall
    3. Everybody, For those of you that actually been to Axford, Ramsbury, Hungerford or any other place in Wiltshire you must go to the map I mentioned earlier and click on Satellite in the upper right hand corner. It actually will give you a satellite picture that you can keep clicking on and it will actually bring you close enough to see the actual buildings and streets in the small community of Axford, Wiltshire or anywhere else you want to see. It is really exciting to see. Around Axford there were fields that had been readied for planting. It was really exciting to see the actual town. Please try it. Eileen told me in an email of going to various places on bikes when she was a girl. Now she can actually see them again from Australia. 1. [WESTALL] Great Bedwyn and Little Bedwyn
    2. Bob Westall
    3. Fantastic, Today on the map I had mentioned earlier I found Great Bedwyn and Little Bedwyn. They are both located on the Kennet and Avon Canal. This canal runs North by northeast and not to long a distance it arrives at Hunderford, Wiltshire. Earlier I had ask the list about these two Bedwyns but no answer. Again this map is very good and you can enlarge an area to the point that it will give you the streets and their names! http://www.travelblog.org/Europe/United-Kingdom/England/Wiltshire/Trowbridge /map-trowbridge.html Fred, you are right about the concentration of the Westall family as the location mentioned by Oliver earlier today shows the greatest concentrations of Westall's to be around Swindon, Wiltshire, and Blackburn, Lancashire. 3. Fred, And the beat goes on! First, I am still not sure about Hickerton? More researched needed there? Second, for George Westall b 1854 I have his wife as Martha Ann Pike b Apr - June 1859 in Hungerford. They show in the 1881 census and the ages match perfectly to what Free BMD shows. Although I guess matching ages do not mean much do they? Their 1881 Census follows? 1881 England Census Name: George Westall Age: 27 Estimated Birth Year: abt 1854 Relation: Head Spouse's Name: Martha Gender: Male Where born: Ramsbury, Wiltshire, England Civil Parish: Ramsbury County/Island: Wiltshire Country: England Street address: White House Lane Condition as to marriage: Married Employment status: View Image Occupation: Ag Lab Registration district: Hungerford Sub registration district: Hungerford ED, institution, or vessel: 14 George Westall Head..M..27..Agr Laborer..Wilts, Ramsbury Martha Westall Wife..M..22......................Wilts, Ramsbury William Westall Son...S...4 .................... According to my records George Westall (b.1841, Hungerford) married Mary Hickerton (b. 1844, Stanton St Quenton Wilts) in Chippenham in Sep Qtr 1862. Pairing the right George Westall with a Mary together during this period is like trying to locate mines by stamping your feet! Effective but futile! ^_^ I also have George Westall (b.1854, Ramsbury) as being married to Martha Ann Pike (b.1859, Ramsbury). There have been several points of connection between the Westall and Pike, Lewington and Woolford families of Ramsbury. George Westall and Martha Pike had 9 children, one of them being William George Westall (b. 1876, Ramsbury). I have 8 children from the marriage of John Newman Westall (b.1815, Ramsbury) and Charlotte Mead (b.1820, Gt Bedwyn). I have the children you listed, plus an Elizabeth Westall (bap 17 Aug 1845, Ramsbury). I also have a George Westall (b.1854, Ramsbury) who married Elizabeth Spanswick (b.1809, Eastbury). But according to my mine detector their son George (b.1854, Ramsbury) married a Sarah Wooton (b.1867, Ramsbury) in 1885 in Hungerford (RD). It seems that George was a very popular name amongst the Ramsbury Westall's - giving future genealogists endless fun tracking them down ^_^ Fred -------------------------------------------------- From: "Bob Westall" <bobatbmw@cox.net> Sent: Friday, November 07, 2008 9:14 PM To: "'J & E Armstrong'" <ellmay7@bigpond.net.au>; <WESTALL@rootsweb.com> Subject: Re: [WESTALL] Westall > Eileen, > > > > This really does get more confusing as the George Westall (b Bet. 3. Bob Forgive me if you are aware of the University College, London Surname Database, but if not, have a look here at the distribution of the surname Westall in the 1881 Census: http://www.nationaltrustnames.org.uk/Map.aspx?name=WESTALL&year=1881&altyear =1998&country=GB&type=name You can find a good deal more information in this source, including the foci of Westalls in the US and New Zealand and comparable UK data for 1998. You will see that the data broadly confirms your suggestion. But Fred Westall's fascinating researches show how his line escaped via canal and tunnel construction to create the now very significant northern Westall branch. While I live in the north of England, I moved here myself as a young man and my link is really back to Axford via my grandfather Harry. Oliver Westall > Correct me if I am wrong. 3. With Bob searching out Axford, it seems very appropriate tonight, the eve of the ninetieth anniversary of the Armistice, to send you all this photo of the World War I Memorial at Ramsbury Parish Church, with its four Westalls lost. Of course, there were many more thirty nine Westalls according to the Commonwealth War Graves Commission: http://www.cwgc.org/search/SearchResults.aspx?=casualty&surname=Westall&init ials=&war=1&yearfrom=1914&yearto=1919&force=&nationality=&send.x=49&send.y=1 2 My grandfather Harry Westall (b. 1889) an Axford Westall son of Mary Westall (b. 1869) and grandson of Henry Westall (b. 1827) a farm labourer of Axford - and Eliza Pike, is buried at Trescault, near Havrincourt Wood, where he was shot in 1917. He is remembered on the Marlborough Town War Memorial. He carried the name Westall through his mother because his father did not acknowledge him and is not now known. The family legend is that Mary was a domestic servant at Marlborough College and the father was a member of teaching staff. I have not visited the War Memorial at Axford, but there is a photo here: http://www.wiltshire.gov.uk/gallery/church/ramsbury_picF0040.JPG It does not appear to have any names, but it¹s possible that there are some on the reverse. Let us remember those thirty nine Westalls tonight in the knowledge that the sense of loss still echoes down the years. Oliver Westall No mockeries now for them; no prayers nor bells, Nor any voice of mourning save the choirs,- The shrill, demented choirs of wailing shells; And bugles calling for them from sad shires. ?

    3. Correct me if I am wrong. It seems to me that most of the Wiltshire Westall family are located from Bristol East by southeast to Bath. From Bath to Bradford-upon-Avon as well as to Colerne. Trowbridge is East by Southeast of Bradford-upon-Avon and Melksham is East by northeast from Bradford-upon-Avon. Almost due north of Melksham is Chippenham and on North by northeast is Swindon. Marlborough is almost due south of Swindon. Pretty much due east of Marlborough is Axford, Ramsbury, Hungerford, and Kintbury in that order. Lambourn is due north of Kintbury and south by southeast of Swindon. Pretty much everybody in the Wiltshire Westall family that I have in our data base (now over 800) lived in one of these communities. Trowbridge in very much amongst these communities but they seem to have their own separate Westall family? Thanks to everyone that has aided in the research so far. Lots more to learn about I think! 3. Everybody, Being as ignorant as I am with English geography is has been very difficult for me to understand the location and proximity of one Wiltshire community to another when various members of the list mention where they are from etc. Bingo! I have found a marvelous map that you can drag from one area to another. For the first time I can see the location of Axford to Kintbury to Swindon to etc. etc. etc. The URL is http://www.travelblog.org/Europe/United-Kingdom/England/Wiltshire/Trowbridge /map-trowbridge.html I found it by going onto Google and then I entered "Map of Wiltshire, England". It is marvelous as you can click to make the area shown smaller which gives you the smaller communities. Please try it as I think it has be a "God sent" to me and has let me understand much more. Hopefully everyone can see it if you wish to try the URL. Bob E-mail message checked by Spyware Doctor (6.0.0.386) Database version: 5.11080 http://www.pctools.com/en/spyware-doctor-antivirus/

    3. David, Great to see you back on the list! I hope all has been good for you and your family. If I recall correctly you are descended from Henry Westall b 11 Jan 1846 in Canford, Dorsetshire, Eng . He married Sarah Ann Kingscott ( b 22 Jan 1844 Olveston, Gloucestershire, Eng) on 12 Oct 1862 in St. James, Bristol, Gloucestershire, Eng. Anyway, we have had an explosion of this family in the last 4 months or so, If you go back to July or August and read the Westall archives you will get a great deal of info on the family. Fred Westall, Chistine Charles, and Eileen Armstrong are direct descendants of this family also. All three have added priceless info concerning this branch of the Westall family. My data base now contains over 800 members in this Westall Family Branch and it is still growing. Warmest regards from all of your Westall cousins! 1. Re: [WESTALL] George Westall and Mary
    2. Fred Westall
    3. Bob, Let me add even more to the confusion. Here's yet another George Westall who married a Mary in Wiltshire. * George Westall married Mary Taylor in Jun Qtr 1860 in Melksham (RD) Wilts. Both were originally from Trowbridge and this particular George Westall was bap 2 Aug 1840. Mary Taylor was born abt. 1842. As far as I can tell George's parents were William Westall (b. 1807, Trowbridge) and Mary Ann Pitman (b.1816, Trowbridge). They were married 3 Apr 1836 in St James, Trowbridge. So far I have not been able to link the Trowbridge branch with the rest of the family, but I can trace them back to William Westell (bap 16 May 1720, Trowbridge) and Mary Sollick who married on 25 Jul 1744 in Trowbridge. I think William's parents might have been John Westall (bap 2 Nov 1696, Keevil) and Mary Aishman (b.1697, Keevil Wilts) but I've no real evidence for this. I'd be grateful for any information on the connection between the Trowbridge and the Hungerford Westall's (or indeed if anyone can identify any other George Westall's who married a Mary in Wiltshire about the year 1860!) 3. Bob, Whoops it's a transcription error for the marriage of Martha Jane to William Mundy. Indeed they were married in 1902 and not 1909 as I stated. (A black hole must have gone through my brain - I blame the Large Hadron Collider!). Thanks for providing useful extra information about this branch of my family. I was missing dau. Sarah Westall (b.1863, Hunton St Quinton St Quinton) so I'll add her to my tree. Coincidentally, Mary Hickerton was born in Stanton St Quintin (I can't find Hunton on my map - I wonder if it's a transcription error for Stanton). By the way, Stanton St Quintin lies half way between Chippenham and Malmesbury, and is in the heart of 'Westall Wiltshire'. There are so many coincidences here - I'm beginning to think that Mary Woolford and Mary Hickerton were the same person! I think a look at the MCert would definitely be in order! By the way, William George Westall (b.1896, Trelaw) was the eldest son of William James Westall and Ann Howells. He was killed in action on 4 Nov 1918 in one of the last actions of WW1. He is commemorated at the Englefontaine British Cemetery in France. Let's take a moment to remember our brave Westall family members who gave their lives for us. Many thanks for your kind assistance. 3. Bob, I don't have the marriage certificate for George and Mary but it looks as if I'll have the get one to close this debate ;0) Of course, if this turns out to be the wrong certificate for George then we'll have the challenge of adding yet another George Westall to our family tree! By the way, I do have the marriage certificate for William Westall and Sarah Pounds (George's parents). They were married on 1 July 1837 at the parish church in Hungerford. This marriage took place just after civil registration was introduced in 1837. Witnesses were Joseph Marshall and Lucy Barnes, and William and Sarah's parents were confirmed as George Westall and John Pounds respectively. Your logic is perfectly sound in my estimation and again I am not saying that you are perfectly correct. Did you happen to get the marriage certificates on either of the marriages? If not that may be the clincher. I believe you mentioned that you have gotten many certificates in the past? Great working with you. 3. Fred, Some differences with George's children "4. Martha Jane Westall was born in 1877 in Blaina Mon. She married William Mundy in Dec Qtr 1909 in Bradford upon Avon, Wilts." I have found the following on Martha Jane Westall Taken from Free BMD Marriages Dec 1902 WESTALL Martha Jane Bradford on A. 5a 314 MUNDY William Harvey Bradford on A 5a 314 The district Bradford on A. is an alternative name for Bradford upon Avon and it spans the boundaries of the counties of Somerset and Wiltshire I did not find a marriage in 1909 for Martha Jane Westall and William mundy in Q4 of 1909? Obviously it does not mean it is not there? The outline for George and Mary follows. I hope it makes some sense! Normally an outline does not do well when emailing it. Sorry, Oh yes, there are now over 800 in my small data base for this Westall family of Wiltshire. Hopefully one day I can match them against your master data base. 1. [WESTALL] George Westall b 1841 Son of William and Sarah Westall
    2. Bob Westall
    3. Fred, Thank you for all of your info on the Westall family. It has been priceless! Please believe that I am not interested in being right or wrong but I just want us to have it as correct as we can. Frankly, I am not sure that you are not correct and I am off base? Hopefully we can sort it out somehow? What you show for your George and Mary Westall nee Hickerton is the exact info I have for George and Mary Westall nee Woolford. The similarities are amazing to be as we have two George Westall's born 1 year apart who married two different Mary's within a couple of months from each other in 1862. George's marriage to Mary Woolford in the Oct - Dec Qtr and of course George's marriage to Mary Hickerton in the Jul - Sep Qtr, both in 1862. No wonder it is confusing. We both have the same George as husband and two different Mary's as wife but we both have similar children? Wow! The following are the Notes I have for George and Mary. I show in the 1871 census their first born as Sarah born 1863 in Hunton St Quintins, Wiltshire, but I cannot find her in FREE BMD? There was a Sarah Ann Westall who married in the Jan - Mar 1881 Qtr Marriages Mar 1881 Westall Sarah Ann Hungerford 2c 333 Rushen William Hungerford 2c 333 The district Hungerford spans the boundaries of the counties of Berkshire, Hampshire and Wiltshire I don't really know if this Sarah Ann Westall is the correct one or not? One more question on the geography of Wiltshire. Trowbridge and Melksham are not far apart but where is Axford? Bradford-on-Avon, Trowbridge, and Melksham form a triangle, is that correct? Bath is situated between Bristol and Bradford-on-Avon? The map I am looking at shows it a Bradford-on-Avon not upon. Can you tell me which way is the correct way? Swindon is northeast of Melksham? How big an area does Hungerford cover? It appears that Marlborough is almost do South of Swindon? Very close to Marlborough? Axford appears to be located on White's Hill. Go east from Axford and you come to Marlborough? Wow! There is so much I do not know it makes it harder to understand! 1. Re: [WESTALL] Two George Westall married two ladies names Mary
    2. Fred Westall
    3. Bob, Thanks for your valuable work with identifying the mysterious Mary who married George Westall (1841). For some reason (I forget which!) I chose Hickerton in favour of Woolford. In light of your research I might need to change that. Anyway, this is what I have on Mary Hickerton and her marriage to George Westall: 1. Mary Hickerton was born Sep Qtr 1844 in Stanton St Quentin Wilts. (Free BMD). She was the dau. of James Hickerton (b.1814, Stanton) and Susannah Tanner (b.1815, Malmesbury, Wilts). James and Susannah were married Jun Qtr 1838 in Bradford Upon Avon, Wilts. Mary had 6 siblings - one of whom was a Thirza Sophia Hickerton (b. 1841, Turbery Wilts.). (One of the children of George Westall and Mary was called Thirza Maria, and this may have been what pointed me to Mary Hickerton as Thirza is an unusual name). George Westall married Mary Hickerton in Sep Qtr 1862 in Chippenham Wilts. Their children were: 1. William James Westall born Sep Qtr 1869 in Colerne (or Corsham) Wilts. He died bef. 1918. He married Ann Howells in 1894 in Pontypridd, Glamorgan. 2. Harriett A Westall was born in 1866 in Colerne. 3. Thirza Maria Westall was born Dec Qtr 1874 in Blaina Monmouthshire (Wales). She married Albert Edward Gibbons in Jun Qtr 1899 in Bradford Upon Avon, Wilts. 4. Martha Jane Westall was born in 1877 in Blaina Mon. She married William Mundy in Dec Qtr 1909 in Bradford upon Avon, Wilts. 5. Henrietta Lydia Westall was born Sep Qtr 1879 in Bradford upon Avon, Wilts. She married Sam Willans Prior in Sep Qtr 1900 in Bradford upon Avon. 6. Daisy Mabel Westall was born abt. 1880 in Bradford upon Avon. She married Thomas John Justice in Sep Qtr 1906 in Bradford upon Avon. 7. George Thomas H Westall was born Mar Qtr 1882 in Bradford upon Avon. He married Lily Slatford in Dec Qtr 1907 in Melksham (RD) Wilts. 8. Alice Mary Westall was born abt. 1884 in Bradford upon Avon. She married Lewis S Bainton in Dec Qtr 1913 in Bradford upon Avon. 9. Henry John Westall was born abt. 1886 in Bradford upon Avon. 10. Minnie Victoria Westall was born in Jun Qtr 1887 in Bradford upon Avon. She married George Frederick Care in Sep Qtr 1913 in Bradford upon Avon. I have traced many of these lines and some of them still live in Wales. So as I am Welsh myself I have a bit of a soft spot for this branch of my family ;0)! I hope this helps. As I said before I think the link with Hickerton might be via the choice of Thirza as a name for her child, the same as her sister. Sometimes it can be as tenuous as this.. 3. Eileen, I have included my notes for Thomas Westall, and his wife Sarah nee Dobson. I too came up with 12 children but do they agree with your 12? 3. Bob, Sorry I haven't been on line much recently as I've been away on business.
