    1. Re: [WESTALL] East Ilsley Births #2
    2. Fred Westall
    3. Thanks for the information Bob, Thus far I can't find a connection between the East Ilsley group and the others based around Aldbourne and Ramsbury. The names you mention seem to be mostly from one family line (from IGI): Gen 1. Thomas Westall (b. 1679, East Ilsley m. Ann) to Gen 2. William Westall (b.1679, m. Elizabeth Brooker 1733) to Gen 3. Daniel Westall (b.1735, m. Johanna Curtis 1758) to Gen 4. William Westall (b.1775, m. Elizabeth Lambourn 1796) to Gen 5. Joseph Westall (b.1802, m. Hannah Josey 1821 Aldworth) & Thomas Westall (b.1798, m. Harriet Adnams 1822). Maybe if we can find a way back a further two or three generations from Thomas (1679) we'll find the common ancestor for all the Berkshire Westall's. Or maybe not! So far I have been unable to find out who > John Henry's parents > were, but I guess they connect at some point with my > family as they were > from the Newbury area. Any help would be appreciated. This is 'my' WESTALL branch but some of the facts have been distorted: The parents of Jack Claude were Henry WESTALL born 1859 Speenhamland and Ada Ellen HISCOCK born 1869 Kingsclere. Henry [my Grandfather] later 'adopted' the first Christian name John but was also known as Jack; however, he was registered and baptized as plain Henry. Henry's parentage was William baptized Newbury St Nicolas 1826 and Mary Ann nee GREEN. William 1826 was a son of William [Bargeman born c1800 place unknown] and Sarah nee LEWIS who married at Newbury St Nicolas in 1820. William the patriarch died in April 1840 at Newbury thereby denying me a census entry for him: death registered in the name of William WESTAL [i.e. a single 'L'] aged 39, These WESTALLs were Non-conformists who provided confident signatures at marriage. Widow Sarah nee LEWIS joined the Church of Latter-day Saints in 1842, followed by daughter Mary Ann [who married George CANNING, Newbury Tailor, and emigrated 1849 on the Utah trail], and sons William and Francis. Sarah joined her daughter at Council Bluffs, Pottawattamie Co., Iowa in 1853 but my last 'sighting' of her was there in 1856, just before the coldest-recorded winter [mercury minus 36 degrees]. I don't know whether Sarah survived and remained in Iowa but she was only in her early 50s when she emigrated. I would love to be able to break the 19th Century 'barrier' to get to the origins of this branch: they must have received a decent education if the boys were capable of preaching the gospel in their 20s. Sarah and son William's joint 1851 Census return was compromised by the subsequent additions 'of Ag Lab' after Widow and insertion of 'Ag' before Labourer. These were barge folk evolving into the building trades of urban Newbury as General Labourers; Plumbers; Bricklayers; and Painter/Decorators. Agriculture does not feature in any of their civil registrations or parish register entries. There was a - so far- unidentified Mr WESTALL in Newbury 1846, possibly of the Primitive Brethren sect. Contemporary correspondence suggests they might have recently opened a Meeting House there.

    3. PS Like you I also have the Elizabeth Westall (1852) as the dau. of George Westall (1806) and Elizabeth Spanswick (1809) who married 18 Dec 1827 in Lambourne, Berks. 3. Hi Bob, I've had another look and on balance I think you are quite right. Elizabeth (1853) probably did marry Henry John Chivers as you suggest. I think you are also right about the marriage of Sarah Ann Westall (1859) and William John Rushen (1858) in 1881. The other Sarah Westall (1850) who married William James Rushen (1850) in 1870 was probably the daughter of John Westall (1818, Ham) and Elizabeth Vockins (1824, Ramsbury). But there are a half a dozen other Sarah Ann Westall's who could fit the bill!. The parents of William John Rushen (1858) were Henry Eaton Rushen (1828, Ramsbury) and Sarah Wailing (1828, Ramsbury) who married 1849 in Hungerford RD. The parents of William James Rushen (1850) were James Rushen (1825, Ramsbury) and Ann Booker (1826, Ramsbury). James and Henry Eaton Rushen were brothers (parents James Rushen (1795, Ramsbury) and Sarah Eaton (1793, Trowbridge?) Two William Rushen's marry two Sarah Westall's in Ramsbury. I think someone is trying to test us? ;o) Good work Bob. 1. Re: [WESTALL] Ernest Westall b 1879

    3. Bob, My data shows Elizabeth (b.1853) as unmarried. However, I've just noticed she had a son Edward Westall (b.1879) - if so that seems to eliminate her as Ernest's (1879) mum? Or maybe I've just got my Ernest's and Edward's mixed up (like my John's and Jack's). Sarah Ann (1859) I also have as unmarried. I know that William Rushen married a Sarah Westall - actually there are two: 1. Dec 1870, Hungerford, 2c, 529 (Sarah) 2. Mar 1881, Hungerford, 2c, 333 (Sarah Ann) I agree that the second one looks possible, but we'll need a marriage certificate to be sure as I have several other Sarah Ann Westall's in the Hungerford area as possibilities. Also I think that Ramsbury may be in the Marlborough registration district, rather than Hungerford RD? I'll need to check that. I agree with you that Richard would be a bit young to father Ernest ... but maybe not! My data shows Harry Westall (1889) as the base-born of Mary Westall (1869-1950). She was unmarried at death. Oliver Westall is descended from this Harry Westall, so is an honorary Westall (aren't we all?). Mary's parents were Henry and Eliza Pike. harry Westall was born 7 Jul 1889 in Ramsbury and married Rose Amelia Stagg (b.19 Apr 1889, Stepney London) 1n 1914 in Pancras, London. Harry Martin Westall was born 4 Dec 1916 in Torbay, Devon. So we have a slight difference of opinion there. Harry married Doris Oliver (b.1917) in 1941 in Kerrier RD, Devon. 3. Bob, William Westall (who married Jane Woolford) was my 4x great granduncle. His parents were John Westall (b.1718) and Hester Benfield (b.1720) who married 1 Sep 1745 in Aldbourne. I am descended via their son (William's brother) David Westall (b.1752, Baydon) who married Hannah Sims on 27 Oct 1777 in Inkpen Wilts. I think Ernest (1879) was the son of one of Henry's (1827)/Eliza Pike's children, probably either Elizabeth (b.1853) or Sarah Ann (b. 1859), but I can't identify which. I think you are probably right that Jack Westall (b.1914) was the same who was killed in WW2 (b.15 Sep 1944, Italy). I'm a bit puzzled why he was in the 5th Bn, Hampshire Regiment, as he was born in Cardiff, Wales, but so far he's the only Jack Westall I have been able to find in GRO who fits the age profile given in CWGC. Actually, there is another Jack Claude Westall who was born in Kingscleare, Hampshire in 1898 but it's unlikely to be him as he would have been 46 years old when he died. By the way, this Jack's parents were John Henry Westall (b.1864, Newbury) and Ada Ellen Hiscock (b.1870, Kingsclere). So far I have been unable to find out who John Henry's parents were, but I guess they connect at some point with my family as they were from the Newbury area. Any help would be appreciated. Unfortunately, in my branch of the family there has been a tendency for the John Westall's to call themselves 'Jack'. I have recently been researching a colourful grand uncle of mine, John Thomas Westall (1870 - 1940) who was known by everyone as 'Jack'. If anyone wants to know more about this particular Jack and his descendants then please contact me (there are groups based at both ends of England i.e. in the Worthing/East Preston area of West Sussex, and in the Cadishead area of Lancashire. It's a long story!). Amongst other things he was no.1 Diver for the Great Western Railway, and there is a small prize for anyone guessing correctly why a railway needs a diver... ;0) Jack's a bit special as it was stories that my dad told me about him that got me hooked on finding out my family history! 1. [WESTALL] Ernest Westall b 1879
    2. Bob Westall
    3. Fred, You mentioned that Ernest is the grandson of Henry Westall b 1827. I would agree with that as Ernest shows in the 1881 census as a grandson to Henry! By the process of elimination it would seem there were two chances at Ernest parenthood by the ages of Henry's children. The only male offspring I have was Richard and he was only 16 in the 1881 census? Two daughters old enough were Elizabeth m 1880 to Henry John Chivers and Sarah Ann m 1881 to William John Rushen. What would be your thoughts on this one? I show Harry Westall b 07 Jul 1889 Axford, Ramsbury, Wiltshire, Eng but do not have parents for him either?. Can you help on this one also? Harry m Rose Ann Stagg 05 Dec 1914 and had Harry Martin Westall 04 Dec 1916 Fulham, Wiltshire, Eng. In the 1901 census Harry is 11 and shows as a Visitor at the home of Elizabeth Chivers? 1901 England Census Name: Elizabeth Chivers Age: 46 Estimated Birth Year: abt 1855 Relation: Head Gender: Female Where born: Axford, Wiltshire, England Civil Parish: Preshute Ecclesiastical parish: Marlborough St Mary County/Island: Wiltshire Country: England Street address: London Rd Occupation: Charwoman Condition as to marriage: Widow Registration district: Marlborough Sub registration district: Marlborough ED, institution, or vessel: 10 Neighbors: View others on page Household schedule number: 127 Elizabeth Chivers Head..Wd..46..Charwoman............Witls, Axford Henry J Chivers Son...S....17..Gardiner's Laborer..Wilts, Marlborough Harry Westall Visitor...S....11.................................Wilts, Axford Thanks again for any assist you can give? 3. Fred, This is very helpful. Henry Westall b 1827 is the ancestor of Oliver Westall one of our members I believe! Where does Henry Westall b 1827 meet up with your family. You have William Westall m Jane Woolford 5 Jan 1771 Highworth, Wiltshire but I cannot tie them to your direct ancestors? The more you learn the more confusing it all becomes! 3. Bob, Ernest Westall and Emily Ellen Vardy married in 1907 in the Marlborough Registration District (Ramsbury is in this RD). Additionally to those you listed I think they had at least two other children: 1. Albert Augustus Ernest Westall (b. Mar qtr 1908) 2. Stanley Vardy Westall (b. Jun qtr 1909) Many thanks for your suggestion about Jack Westall who died in 1944. I'll look into it.
