Bob, I know nothing about this family, my Westalls so far being firmly routed in UK. However, as a nurse, I may have something to add to your email. Elizabeth Westall was noted as insane, and also suffering from general paralysis. Try 'Googling' General Paralysis of the Insane, it might give you an insight into your great uncle as well as your great aunt! These queries always seem to kick off when I'm out of contact! In Jill Chambers' book concerning the Berkshire Swing Riots, William WESTALL's age is given as 20; condition single; occupation gardener & bricklayer. This information appears to have been extracted from the Prison Hulk details given under the PRO ref: HO9/9 p42. Dorothy
One other thing. Apparently he was one of a group arrested in Kintbury in 1830 for their part in the riots. Hi Bob, This sounds like the same Wm Westall who was transported for life for his part in the Berkshire Swing Riots of 1830. He appears on the convicts list for the Eleanor, which sailed from Portsmouth for NSW on 15th Feb 1831 (he had been convicted at Reading Assizes on 27 Dec 1830 where he was given a Life sentence). He was freed on 9 Nov 1837 so he had served just 7 years of his sentence. It is not clear what happened to him after he was freed - maybe our Australian branch can shed some light. At the time of deportation it was stated he was 20 yrs old, which would have given a birth date of abt. 1810. There are a lot of Wm Westalls but none on my tree that were born in 1810. My nearest candidate was bap. in 1806 in Baydon and was the son on Thomas Westall and Sarah Bray, but this is complete speculation on my part. It was not that unusual for convicts transported to NSW on Life sentences to have these commuted after a few years. Dear Monika Butler, For brevity, may I call you Monika ? I am a great grandson of Caroline and her husband Thomas George Westall of St. Lucia. Their son Ernest George Westall of Halifax, N.S., Canada is my grandfather. I am aware of info you provided regarding Caroline Agatha Hutchinson (Westall) to Bob Westall 23 Nov 2006 (re rootsweb). She is my great grandmother and I am trying to reconcile some different records regarding her name. You identified her also as Caroline Agatha Hutchinson and her sister as Louisa Catherine Hutchinson born in India in 1859. Questions: Can you possibly explain why Thomas George Westall (her fathers Will, ref attached notes ) says she was born a Hinkson ? Strangely the will initially identifies her as Caroline Agatha Hutchinson Westall and a co executrice & befactor. Was Caroline also born in India ? How are you related to or associated with Caroline to be so familiar with the family history ? I would welcome the opportunity to exchange any information with you. Thank you, respectfully, Tom Joyce Waterloo, Ontario, Canada 519.885.4714
There has been some debate over the birth place and parentage of Caroline Agatha Hutchinson, the wife of Thomas George Westall. I have never been successful clarifying the location of either Thomas George Westall as well until now. In the 1871 Census Thomas George is living with his uncle Robert Westall in Islington East, London. Thomas was shown as age 13 in the 1871 English Census. One of our members, Richard Westall found Thomas G. Westall's father Thomas Westall (b 15 Oct 1824 in St. Pancras, London) had gone to India as a Lt in the Royal Navy. This Thomas was also an engineer. Thomas married Ellen Murphy (b 06 Jul 1820, Bengal, India) in 1853 in Bombay India. www.fibis.com shows that two sons were born to Thomas and his wife Ellen. For Caroline Agatha Hutchinson she was born in 1862 in Arrah Bongah, India the daughter of Alexander Ross Elliot Hutchinson a Major in Her Majesties India Army. A.R.E. Hutchinson shows as a being a retired Major General in the 1881 English Census. Also Caroline's grandfather was Sir Robert North Hamilton and her great grandfather was Sir Frederick Hamilton. The point I am trying to make is that Thomas George Westall the grandson of William Westall Royal Art Academy, and his wife Caroline Agatha Hutchinson the daughter of a long line of Officers in the Royal India Army would have many more and higher connections in the English government in order to help St. Lucia get its independence in the 1915 to 1920. I have a substantial amount of info on the Hutchinson family. The brother to Alexander R. E. Hutchinson (Caroline's uncle) John Ross Hutchinson, Jr. was also in India. John Ross Hutchinson, Jr. was killed in an Indian Mutiny in 1857 http://www.haileybury.herts.sch.uk/archives/roll/INDIAN%20MUTINY.htm JOHN ROSS HUTCHINSON Haileybury 1840 - 1841 No. 714 Surname Hutchinson Christian Names John Ross Dates at Haileybury 1840-41 2nd Term Essay Prize 3rd Term Classics, Hindustani Prizes 4th Term Persian Medal; Hindustani, Essay Prizes Presidency Bengal Career in India 1842-57 Place of Death Killed at Delhi Date of Death 1857 May 11 Final Appointment 1 Magistrate of Dehli. On hearing of the arrival of the mutineers from Meerut on the morning of May 11, Hutchinson drove to the Commissioner's house and after conferring with him left for the Dehli gate in order to have it closed. Some men of the 3rd Cavalry, with swords drawn, were hastening to the Palace. Hutchinson had no arms and when he saw them turned his buggy and tried to escape, but the Sowars surrounded it and cut at him. Wounded and bleeding he jumped from the buggy and ran into the house of Ram Ji Das, from which the mutineers dragged him and put him to death. To: The US Embassy Grenada, My name is Bob Westall and I have become the Westall Family Genealogist somewhat by default. Currently I am researching a Westall family that lived in Grenada in the latter 1880's. They were Thomas G. Westall and his wife Caroline Agatha Westall nee Hutchinson. I believe both Thomas and Caroline were born in India. I believe the father of Thomas G. Westall was also Thomas Westall who had gone to India as a Royal Navy Lt ca. early 1850's and Caroline Agatha Hutchinson was b 1862 Arrah Bongah, India, the daughter of Major General Alexander Ross Elliot Hutchinson of Her Majesties Indian Army b 28 Nov 1825, Burdwan, India, d 19 Oct 1908 Stratford on Avon, Warwickshire, Eng. On 8 April 1888 the first born of Thomas G. Westall and Caroline Agatha, Charles Westall, was born in St. Georges, Grenada. I believe that after the birth of Charles, Thomas G. and family moved to St. Lucia, BWI where Thomas G. became involved in the St. Lucian movement for independence. The obituary of Thomas G. Westall is at the end of this email. I have visited Castries, St. Lucia and personally stood at the grave of Thomas G. Westall. He was and is still greatly revered by the people of St. Lucia for his kindness and his extreme Generosity to those that were less fortunate. The 2nd child of Thomas and Caroline was Mary Elizabeth "Pearl" Westall b 27 May 1893. I believe that Mary Elizabeth was probably born in St. Lucia but I am not certain of that fact. As can be noted there was a five year delay between the first and 2nd born of the family? Does Grenada have available birth records in their official archives as does St. Lucia? If so could you please give me the email address as well as the phone number and street address? Any assistance you can give me on this would be greatly appreciated. Respectfully yours, Bob Westall Annandale, VA 703-425-5557 ######################## The Voice of St. Lucia Tuesday, November 15, 1938 Death of Mr. T. G. Westall, M.B.E. Died yesterday morning Mr. Thomas George Westall, M.B.E. at the age of 86 years after several days' illness. Mr. Westall who came to St. Lucia from England more than fifty years ago, identified himself with the public affairs, being a great favourite with the working classes and was prominent in the Friendly Society Movement. He achieved great work in the cause of Representative Government for these Islands and visited England at his own expense in that cause. Mr. Westall became the first elected member of the Legislative Council unopposed and as such served for two terms, later becoming a nominated member. He served for many years on the Castries Town Board and was Chairman more than once. He was a member of the Victoria Hospital Visiting Committee. Besides being the recipient of the M.B.E. he also received the Silver Jubilee Medal. For years he carried on a successful drug and also a grocery business. He leaves to mourn the loss three sons and three daughters and several grand children who are away in North and South America. To them and other relatives the VOICE extends deepest sympathy. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you Bob. Thank you for continuing to be the 'Gatekeeper'for Westall Genealogy. May 2010 be filled with success in whatever may make your life the most fulfilled. Thank you all for being part of my "labor of love", our Westall family genealogy. There has not been a great deal of postings to the Westall list in 2009 but none the less I have worked steadily to find new Westall family members. Quite some success has been found in the Lancashire Westall family that came to the new world. Chris, Pam, Shelley, and Donald are all members of this select Westall family group and I hope to continue to reach more of them. My own Westall family of Virginia has grown to over 14,000 with the addition of our newest member Riley Michele Westall in 2009. Recently a very nice gentleman that is doing a research project on the Thomas G. Westall of Texas and his family sent me a preliminary copy of his thesis. It covers much of what we already knew but there was new info I did not have. In the last couple of months I have spoken to two ladies, one of 86 and the other of 91. They are both so very sharp and their voices were strong as was their memories. Both were most helpful in filling in gray areas. Ellen Gage sent me a couple of pictures of Joshua Montgomery Westall my grandfather's older brother and I can see the resemblance. My older brother resembles Joshua to some degree. The journey of finding our Westall family will never end and my hope is to get as much done as I am allowed the time to do. My daughter has been working on the Westall website, www.ourwestall.com. If anyone wishes to go there it would be nice if you left your name and where your Westall family is located now and where it came from in the past. Warmest possible regards to one and all of the Westall family where ever you might be living. May good health follow you in to the New Year! Hi All, Christmas 2009 is upon us and may it bring to you whatever might make you the happiest. Bob Westall
Hmmm. Not quite so simple: 1851 William WESTALL 78 Father-in-law 'Out of Business' born Berkshire in CRESWELL household. Louisa WESTALL, married Henry CRESWELL 1842, was at school in Liverpool 1841 [age rounded down to 15] not born in County; 1851 recorded aged 27 born Surrey [c1824]. No trace in IGI. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Michael Westall" <l.m.westall@btinternet.com> To: <westall@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, December 17, 2009 3:28 PM Subject: Re: [WESTALL] William Westall 'Snipped' > Another thought, is this family shown in the 1851 census - > this would give a > place of birth.
Hi Bob, Very interesting, I know I am clutching at straws, but there is a very slim chance that this William and Ann could be the parents of my John Westall (born between before 1813 in St James parish, Westminster). I don't know if there are any parish records available to see if he had any other children prior to Eliza whilst they were living in Liverpool. The IGI doesn't show any likely candidates. Another thought, is this family shown in the 1851 census - this would give a place of birth.
