Hi Julie What's your source for the marriage and family of James WESTALL/Edith nee ALLEN? There appear to be some 'suspect' submissions on FamilySearch. Julie, I have tried to find your family and have come up with what appears to be an almost perfect match for the children etc? The fly in the ointment is that they were all born in Berkshire from 1866 to 1879 and no Charles as of the 1881 Census. After a short look see in the 1891 Census they were not to be found? It would also appear that James was b in 1842 and Edith Westall nee Allen was b in 1845, both in Berkshire? I have managed to find his siblings (listed below) I do not know when he came to Australia and when and where he died. He married my Great Grandma Alma Constance nee Kershaw while she was still married to my Great Grandad (she married as Amy Miller born in England) - [just after Great Grandad arrived home from WW1 - they divorced in 1923] Charles and Amy (Alma) had 5 children of which I have info on and possibly another who died in infancy. In latter years Alma (Amy) was with her first hubby (my Great Grandad) I haven't found anything to suggest the whereabouts of Charles WESTALL after 1931 where he is listed in the Electoral roll in Martin NSW living with Amy (Alma). I went a few stages further and discovered that a 'Walter' WESTALL, 1891 with a wife Elizabeth, appeared to have children in a similar sequence to William the woodcutter ......... Bob, Wrong again!! But only in your knowledge of English counties this time! Wantage registration district spans the boundaries of the counties of Berkshire and Oxfordshire, quite a distance from Kent. I tried to look this family up in 1911 census, assuming that Charles and William might have been brothers. The only family with a Charles and a William Westall (no initials given) was a family of Westall's born in St Pancras and living in Islington. I can find no appropriate birth registrations for Charles E Westall or William W Westall in St Pancras at the right time (Charles aged 14 and William aged 20). This still might be the right family, but unless the name of Charles' father is known from marriage certificate, it would be difficult to establish a connection. Does your contact know any more about this family? They don't appear to be particularly well off - father a wood chopper, children various occupations inc. rag sorter, rag sorters assistant and Charles himself a newsboy. Dorothy, You could be absolutely correct but I knew nothing of the Charles E. family. I have seen so many births registered late or incorrectly that I did not automatically feel it was totally wrong. There was a chance that they were twins? The person that told me of the family said that Charles E. and Alice had a large family of something like 13 children. Having two women by the name of Francis marrying two men by the name of Westall in the same location in a short period of time does make the situation a little of a problem. Thanks for your thoughts. Dear Bob, I've just seen the messages from December 2009 about this William Westall. The 1851 census entry definitely refers to my g-g-g-grandfather. My g-g-grandparents Louisa Westall and Henry Burgess Creswell were married in Manchester Cathedral on 5th November 1842. Louisa gave her age as "full", her address as Liverpool Road [Manchester] and her father's name and profession as William Westall, Innkeeper. Pigot & Slater's Directory of Manchester for 1841 has a William Francis Westall at the Railway & Commercial Hotel, Liverpool Road. By 1847, according to Slater's Directory of Important English Towns, the Railway & Commercial Hotel had been replaced by a coal yard (no doubt as a result of the proliferation of the railways in this part of Manchester) and William Francis Westall was at the Spread Eagle, Hanging Ditch. I have not found him in any Manchester directory after 1850 and I had convinced myself that, in spite of the extra forename, this was Louisa's father who was, by 1851, "out of business". Then I saw your message about the 1841 census entry and had to think again. The ages match (though I am surprised to see exact ages in 1841) and if Louisa was at school in Liverpool 1841 then this could be g-g-g-grandfather William. But if he was in Liverpool in 1841, William Francis must be a different person, though clearly related - possibly William's son? Can you (or anyone else) shed any more light, and/or tie my Westalls into the bigger picture? Jenny
Sir, Ernest George Westall Ernest George Westall is the son of Thomas George Westall and Caroline Westall of St Lucia. EGW is the brother of Charles Westall(already on your index) and John Hampton Westall. EGW is also my grandfather. His 1st marriage was to Alice who followed him to Halifax Nova Scotia Canada with their 3 children. I am unsure when or why they separated/divorced but his 2nd wife Eileen Crawford Petley Westall was my grandmother; their daughter Joyce Westall was may mother. The obituary for my grandfather EGW as appears in the Halifax Chronicle dated Monday 12 June 1944 ( as appears on Reel 5733 of the Nova Scotia Archives in Halifax) records includes the following: A commissioner of the Supreme Court, son of TG Westall, MBE, J.P. of London England survived by 4 daughters, Gwendolyn, Joyce, Agatha, and Mary, and also 5 sons; Thomas,Terrence,Noel, Adrian, and Anthony. He leaves 3 sisters, Agatha Westall of port of Spain, Trinidad; W.Kingston of Halifax, And Mrs J. Monoghan of Halifax and 2 brothers John and Charles living in New York. He is burried in the Camp Hill Cemetary in Halifax. His wife, my grandmother, Eileen Westall later died 17 July 1976 as reported in The Mail Star (NS Archives Reel 7691). She was also survived by 2 sisters, Evelyn Burns and Dorothy Barlow and one son Terrence Westall who died earlier in NYC , USA. Last month my wife Kathleen and I visited the grave of my great grandfather TG Westall in St Lucia and obtaind a book "The Historiy of Castries" that records his role in getting independence for St Lucia. Last year we also visited Halifax to find the grave of my grandmother Eileen Westall (TGW's daughter-in-law) and obtaind a lot of additional info about the transpotaon/travels of many Westall from Pier 21. You may wish to add some of this info to your geaneaology database. If you have any information on Alice Westall (EGW's 1st wife from St Lucia) receiving that would be appreciated. Hi, Over the last week or so I have been on Facebook communication with John Westall of WA, Australia. Tonight I called john and had a very pleasant conversation with him. John had given me some basic information about his family and I had found out much more of his origins in Wiltshire, England. I am working on it a little more and I will send him info on his family. This is most rewarding to me as I, like John, knew very little of my family until someone helped me. I hope to make more progress on our family in Australia. Hi, Lately, I have been looking into www.Facebook.com. There are at least 500 people that are tied to the Westall family. So far I have over 80 friends on Facebook, and several of our members are already on Facebook. They have a http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=2369876863 which is a grouping of 59 people that all have ties to the Westall family name in one place. Take a quick look and let us know what you think. We have a new member from Facebook and he is Ian from Australia. Hopefully Ian is just the first of many from Facebook to come to the Westall Mailing List. Hmmm - I didn't think so..... I've just ploughed back through my emails and found that one of my correspondents, who owed me a few favours, in 2006 found the baptism of a William WESTALL, base born of a Sarah WESTALL, at Kintbury 29 March 1807. I think he's the most likely candidate as he would have been 20+ at the time of the riots, if he survived, and probably would not have known his exact age. Alternatively, in his own interests, he might have wished to make out he was younger to his prosecutors. However, I can't find evidence that a check was made of the Kintbury Burials Register to establish that this William did not die in infancy, so perhaps some kind soul with access to the Berkshire Burials CD could do the honours?
