Thank you all for your suggestions. The Ancestry image has D9/6 at its foot, so this is what I've tried to find. I've tried all sorts of variations including the WDP or WD prefix, and the CALM catalogue only seems to respond to a request for WDP9 - which as Sharon says is All Saints Dewsbury. WDP9/6 is a subsection of a composite register (baptisms, marriages and burials together) but only begins in 1753 and runs up to 1774. This makes it probable that my Squire Jaggar baptism in 1760 occurred in Dewsbury. Drat! Not where I wanted him! But it doesn't explain the beginnings of the "St Hilda's" record set for 1538. Nick's suggestion that it probably means Halifax St John's is the most likely answer but it would be nice to know. I shall be visiting Wakefield in February if all goes well, maybe I should ask them while I'm there. You wonder if the name of St Hilda was pulled out of a hat!! (or a wimple). Thanks again. Hi Maggie St Hilda's was a 100 years old last year, my partner and I attended the celebrations. So compared to some churches in Halifax it is quite modern. Hi The answer is quite simple, Ancestry have made a major cock up when indexing these records. This is just one example of many churches they have mixed up. If you go back through this mailing lists archives from June when the WYAS records went live you will find loads of messages about churches being wrongly indexed. The St Hilda set starting at 1538 is not St Hilda Halifax it is All Saints Dewsbury EG. Kippax St Mary records were indexed as Hunset Moor, Castleford All Saints indexed as Wakefield, very early18thC Castleford All Saints records indexed as Castleford St John which did not open until 1913. It states 1538 because All Saints records also start at 1538. The date ranges seem to correct where the church name is wrong so do offer a clue. I had a quick look through the catalogue and I think the only other records held at Wakefield from 1538 are those of Wragby as well as Halifax. If the collection reference isn't on the bottom of the fiche then the dates do give a hint in this case Halifax, Wragby or Dewsbury. But in this case you have that reference too. D9/6 is the 6th fiche (or film) of the D9 series of fiches which represent the original document collection held at Wakefield (WDP9). My catalogue says that WDP9 covers Dewsbury All Saints, Dewsbury St James and St Philip, Mission. So as others have said its certainly Dewsbury All Saints.
