Thank you for the leads. The http://www.railwaysarchive.co.uk/ site had lists of accidents over all railway time. As is so often the problem nothing fits. There was an accident in 1926 August 30, a Monday when a train hit a charabanc on a level crossing, but that was in Cumbria, Naworth, and probably a long way from Stainforth. But there were 9 deaths, 8 from the coach and the crossing keeper. So far not been able to find out any more but I suppose it may have been an outing. Finding the TAYLOR family is proving hard -- a common name and they were itinerant workers for a while, catholic with Irish connections. Makes me wish I had asked (even) more questions of the family. ==John ffitch
Hi John I can't recall the accident details from your original post but it may be that the death of a single child at a level crossing was not regarded as significant enough to warrant the attention it receives today - in much the same way that most road deaths today are unreported. Another example of biased reporting: more people were killed in the building of the Forth railway bridge than were killed in the Tay Bridge disaster. HTH Andy.
