    1. [WRY] Do these buildings in Wath upon Dearne exist today?

    3. Hi A number of years ago SKS sent me two scans from a book on Wath upon Dearne, of buildings associated with my family. I would like to find out whether they are still standing and identifiable, and also to determine the title and author of the book. 1. The Cross Keys on Doncaster Road was photographed about 1910 (possibly built about 1874). Using the OS Old Maps site and GoogleMaps I think I have identified it as the first building on the left coming off the Wath Roundabout going east on the Doncaster Road. Is there anybody on the list that can confirm that this was the Cross Keys? Is it still a pub? 2. This is slightly more complicated as I think it has been affected by modern road alterations. The picture caption says "High Street in 1905, as Victoria School pupils would see it marching to the sports. On the left is number 54-56, an eighteenth century farmhouse. Centre left is New Road, with Wharncliffe Crescent in the distance. New Road was originally Long Hedge Shutt Road. This part of High Street was Burlington Street in the 1860s, as far as Moor Road (then Out Lane) where it became Low Street. On the right is The Hawthorns..." The house I am interested in is the aforementioned "The Hawthorns". I think the house is the one just about opposite the end of New Road on the north side of the High Street. If it is still standing what is it used for today? I have no information about the book other than these two full page B&W photos, but guess it could a book of old photos of Wath upon Dearne - does anyone know of such a tome - author, title, date of publication etc? Please. I cannot put the photos on the web because I think they are likely to be under copyright still. One more question - again using GoogleMaps from the appearance of the land around the parish church - all the gravestones appear to have been removed. Is this so and were they recorded and where are the records? (Any pics?) TIA Chris

    3. Bev thank you for that web site - I had browsed it before but had completely missed the photo of the Cross Keys - I couldn't see the wood for the trees <g> On the webpage, the photo to the left of the farmhouse I think is in the foreground of the photo which shows "The Hawthorns". Neil I will send a copy privately - thank you and thank you for the probable ID of the book(s). 3. Hi Chris, as Beverley said the Cross Keys is still there. >From your description "The Hawthorns" would be at the end of High Street where the road was diverted when the roundabout and bypass were built. There are some old buildings there, in particular what I think is the old farmhouse. If I get chance I'll try and drop by and check if there are any signs of The Hawthorns. Do you still have the photo I can see? As far as the book goes there is a series of South Yorkshire books. Written my Melvyn Jones, published by Wharncliffe called Aspects of Rotherham 1, 2 and 3. It may have been one of those. Hope this helps.
