They haven't been held at St Catherine's House in the Aldwych since they were moved to the Family Records Centre at Islington in the late 1990s. And now that, too, is to close in October - much to the chagrin of UK family historians. It is an absolute disgrace but the powers-that-be have made it quite plain that it is a fait accompli and there is absolutely nothing we can do about it. Unless you can find a library or record office that has copies of the GRO Indexes on microfiche (and they are sometimes unreadable), we will be entirely reliant on consulting the indexes online at Ancestry and Findmypast.com, and also at FreeBMD. To answer your principal question, no, the marriage indexes do NOT give the names of parents. Indeed, the actual marriage certificate itself has never given the mother's name, only the father's. I am talking here about England and Wales, since Scottish certificates do give both parents' names and Scotland's system is superior to ours in England. We have been promised that when the DoVE project (Digitisation of Vital Events) is completed by the GRO the indexes will be rewritten and that the birth indexes will show the maiden names of mothers right back to the beginning in 1837, the marriage indexes will likewise give the names of spouses back to the beginning and the death indexes will show the ages at death back to 1837. However, it has been admitted that, like all government IT projects, it is currently a shambles and is already a year behind schedule. So don't count on your family history researches and brick walls getting any easier! Finally, I don't quite understand why you are asking about the marriage indexes for someone before 1816. Since civil registration didn't start until July 1st 1837, there aren't any indexes before that date. In 1816 you are entirely reliant on the parish registers. I thought all family historians knew that. -- Roy Stockdill Editor, Journal of One-Name Studies Guild of One-Name Studies website: www.one-name.org Newbies' Guide to Genealogy & Family History: www.genuki.org.uk/gs/Newbie.html "There is only one thing in the world worse than being talked about, and that is not being talked about." 3. Roy, 'When' the DoVE project is done, will the new indexes have been copied from the old ones (checking those they can't read), or, will they re-index the whole lot using the actual certificates? Since they will be adding information, I would hope it is the latter.
