No doubt they were taken from the NZ marriage certificate by some church member. All give a birth date of Feb 19 1855 but there are two different death dates, one in 1893 and the other 1920. Since there appears to be no sign of any Frederic Henry Evans (or with similar variant forenames) at Haworth in 1861 (though they may have left for NZ by then) and I can find no marriage of a William Evans and Isabella Gerard, my suspicion is that he was illegitimate and "invented" a set of parents - not exactly uncommon when someone was marrying and wished to disguise the fact from their prospective spouse. Roy, you may be right in that Frederic Henry Evans was illegitimate and he had invented his parents because I've also had my Y-DNA analysed and have an exact 25/25 match with Eastwood(see QHMNK Ysearch.org.) There were Eastwoods in Haworth. I certainly place no trust on the IGI entries as they came from a distant relation who was a LDS church member and his sources were second hand. My first record of FHE was the birth of his daughter in Sydney in 1880 to his 'wife' Charlotte Kaye Kay. The subsequent births of his children give various dates and places for his marriage to Charlotte Kay (born in Pannal abt.1857), they being 17 Feb 1879 Pannal; Jan 1879 Horton; Sept 1876? England. I cannot find any record of this marriage. I have obtained three birth certificates for Frederic(k) Henry Evans's they are; Frederic Henry Evans to Alfred Evans & Maria Martha Pearson Lancaster 1857 Frederick Henry Evans born to John Evans & Sarah Barratt Whitechapel 1853 Frederick Henry Evans born to Thomas Evans & Sarah leappock Altrincham, Chester 1856. I notice there are some Gerard families in West Yorkshire. Also, after FHE died in Upper Hutt, New Zealand in 1920, a woman named Louise, came either from Canada or America looking for her father. No one knew of her existence. - The plot thickens!! -----Original Message----- From: west-riding-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:west-riding-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Roy Stockdill Sent: Monday, 11 June 2007 7:54 p.m. To: west-riding@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [WRY] Evans's in Haworth From: "Rod Evans" <totara.trust@xtra.co.nz> > List: I my g grandfather Frederic Henry EVANS marriage certificate to > my g grandmother that occurred in NZ, states that he was born in > HAWORTH about 1854-56 and that his parents were William EVANS > (overlooker) and Isabella GERARD. > > > > I cannot find any record of any of the above people: baptismal records > of St Michael's Church, Haworth have no record of any person names > EVANS; census records from 1851 to 1871 don't seem to help either. > > > > I have always assumed that since William EVANS was an overlooker, and > that he must have worked in a spinning mill, but since FHE was a > nurseryman could the title overlooker also apply to a nurseryman? > > > > I don't know what mills were in the vicinity of Haworth in the 1850's > and how I would obtain records of the employee's of these mills, or if > he were a nurseryman then what possible estates he may have worked at.> I note there are three IGI entries for him but all are LDS private submissions and therefore, unreliable.
