Thank you for your interest Sandra. It is so frustration to have so much information, yet not be able to piece it together. I did wonder if the wife just deserted, but it would have been just after Josua was born and she left all here children behind. I have found no indication that she re-married, and John certainly did, in 1814 in Scrooby to Harriet Milner. I don't have a death for John. There is not one on the Notts burial records CD, and I have not found him in the 1841 census on Ancestry. He is possibly on the 1841 census living with the Farish family in Sheffield, but there is also an Elizabeth Strafford there, too old to be his daughter, (who married anyway) and not the wife he married in 1814. It is also a bit old for him, even allowing for rounding up. A John Strafford died in Sheffield in 1835 age 54, before BMD records, so no information is given. Two John Straffords died in Sheffield between 1837 and 1841, but I have matched them with other families. Bigamy would not be a new thing! However Scrooby is just a small place and maybe the neighbours would talk about a bigamous marriage. Did you actually find a marriage for John and his second wife. Have a look for a death for Ann in the early BMD years. What about a death for John - if its a cert who notified the death? Have you looked for any Strafford/Crossley combinations on the 1841, not just Scrobby or Wath. Try the surrounding areas, try different spellings, try looking on the census on Ancestry, you can search it by first name only with birth year etc - I've done searches this way and found elusive ancestors with very strang spellings.
