The Legitimacy Act of 1926 (it came into force with effect from 01 January 1927), made it possible to re-register the birth of an illegitimate child if the parents had subsequently married. However, we have an instance of the same thing happening in Hunslet in 1925. The birth of Charles Abbishaw SAVAGE, mother's maiden name SAVAGE, was registered in Hunslet in the March Q of 1911. Stephen Purdy ABBISHAW and Mary SAVAGE married in 1915. In the June Q of 1925 Charles' birth was re-registered as Charles ABBISHAW, mother's maiden name SAVAGE, and a hand-written cross-reference under ABBISHAW appears in the March Q 1911 GRO births index. Was this re-registering of the birth in 1925 actually illegal? Can anyone think of a reason why the ABBISHAWs would suddenly decide to re-register Charles' birth fourteen years after his birth and ten years after their marriage?
