From: "Marjorie Hennessey" <marjorie@gmavt.net> > I recently received a copy of my gr-grandparent's marriage certificate > from the Leeds Registry Office.< As I have already pointed out, the correct term is Leeds REGISTER Office and it's the General REGISTER office. The word, registry, is a misnomer widely used by members of the public and even some councils but it's WRONG! I would expect family historians at least to get it right. -- Roy Stockdill Editor, Journal of One-Name Studies Guild of One-Name Studies website: www.one-name.org Newbies' Guide to Genealogy & Family History: www.genuki.org.uk/gs/Newbie.html "There is only one thing in the world worse than being talked about, and that is not being talked about." Roy, You are correct in that the term register office is 'traditional' for the application your mention. BUT note also the following: "The 1836/7 acts of Parliament allowed for a civil marriage ceremony before a local registrar in a civil registry office" (Herber Mark D.; Ancestral Trails) However, the word 'Registry' is 'the place where the registers are kept' [OED] i.e register office. Thus a registry = register office. 'Registry' is often found in the legal world and under the administration of the court registrar. The abbreviation RO can also mean record(s) office . This email is meant to provide a broader perspective on the topic. I don not intend to enter a dialogue with you.
