My Marriage Certificate has my own and my husband's signature on it, as has my parent's, grandparents and most of the ones I have. I could send you over a hundred marriage certificates which have the couples own signatures and the witnesses on them. All four names written in a different hand and with the signatures recognisable as being my parents, grandparents etc. One of my gt grandmother's, who I knew as she died when I was 11 years old, couldn't write but she could, just, write her name. There is no way that a parish clerk signed her name on the certificate! I have never heard of anyone being given their marriage certificate on their wedding day which they have not signed. I think I am living in a different world as I have never come across what you are talking about. I'll probably face the firing squad now but I am only going by what I know.
