    3. I need advice about my STRAFFORD family. Please let me know what you think. These are the facts I have: John STRAFFORD married Ann CROSSLEY in Wath upon Dearne 7/3/1799. John of the parish of Scrooby, Notts, Ann otp They had children in Scooby between 1800 and 1810 when Ann 'disappears'. The children are Mary Ann, Elizah, John, Adelina, Henery and Josua. Joshua STRAFFORD dies in Scrooby 30/10/1817 age 75 Elizabeth STRAFFORD dies in Scrooby 15/4/1823 age 76 The only other STRAFFORD death in Scrooby is a daughter of John by his second wife, and there are no STRAFFORDS in Scrooby in 1841 A Joshua STRAFFORD married Elizabeth WHITE in Wath upon Dearne 27/12/1773 STRAFFORD births in Wath upon Dearne: 15/10/1777 John STRAFFORD. Father Richard 30/6/1776 Ann STRAFFORD. Father Richard 22/10/1780 Sarah STRAFFORD. Father Joshua, mother Elizabeth I can find no trace (birth, marriage or death) whatsover of a Richard STRAFFORD either in Scrooby, Wath upon Dearne or Consiborough Are Richard and Joshua STRAFFORD the same person? 3. Hi Margaret Yes - quite a puzzle! Possibly Richard and Joshua were brothers or cousins? Have you got details of John Stratford & Ann Crossley marriage in 1799, as seemingly Richard would be the father - recorded on IGI or parish registers I don't think the other family information helps. The only other check I can think of is the possible marriage of Ann Stratford c 1800 in the areas - assuming she did marry! ie no early death or spinster...again father's name maybe there. Hope this helps Richard -----Original Message----- From: west-riding-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:west-riding-bounces@rootsweb.com]On Behalf Of Margaret Elliott Sent: 21 August 2007 10:16 To: WEST-RIDING@rootsweb.com Subject: [WRY] Opinions needed please I need advice about my STRAFFORD family. 3. Thank you for your advice Richard. Unfortunately, although the parish register confirmed that John Strafford was from Scrooby and Ann Crossley 'of this parish', it did not give the parents' names, and the witnesses were not family members. They were married by license, but I'm not sure if finding that would be any help. I have a nasty feeling this family are going to remain a mystery, as there does not seem to be any further information I can find. 3. Hi, Just a thought - a second wife doesn't necessarily mean the death of a first wife. Maybe she uped and left for pastures greener. Bigamy would not be a new thing! However Scrooby is just a small place and maybe the neighbours would talk about a bigamous marriage. Did you actually find a marriage for John and his second wife. Have a look for a death for Ann in the early BMD years. What about a death for John - if its a cert who notified the death? Have you looked for any Strafford/Crossley combinations on the 1841, not just Scrobby or Wath. Try the surrounding areas, try different spellings, try looking on the census on Ancestry, you can search it by first name only with birth year etc - I've done searches this way and found elusive ancestors with very strang spellings. 3. A few thoughts: 1 Possibly Richard was not baptised 2 Possibly his parents did not attend church in any of those three parishes - there are a lot of other parishes in the triangle outlined by those three places 3 Have you checked non-Conformist churches? 4 You talk about /birth/ records but mostly pre-1837, these are baptism records and a person can be any age when they are baptised. If there are not many STRAFFORDs in that area, it is, of course, quite likely that Richard and Joshua are related - brothers or cousins - and Richard could well be the father of your John. BUT I think you would need some incredible evidence (far more than you have at present) to turn them into the same person. Just my thoughts - of little actual positive help, I am sorry. I guess what it comes down to, is more research. 3. Thank your for your interest Chris. There are not a lot of Straffords at all, in fact the only ones recorded in Conisborough, Wath upon Dearne and Scrooby relate to John's family. Your suggestion regarding non-conformist churches is interesting, although I have no evidence elsewhere that the family had any 'leanings' that way. I just find it so strange that Joshua and Elizabeth were living with John in Scrooby, not Richard, and that Joshua and Elizabeth were married in 1773 but no child is recorded to them until 1780, whereas in the same parish 'Richard' has two children in that time period. As you say, 'more research', but I'm not sure quite where to start!
